Umd bulldogs 2010-2011

Re: Umd bulldogs 2010-2011

Exactly, and those kids that need the help are given the fullest extent of whatever studying help they can give them, short of having somebody else take their exams for them or given them a cheat sheet. There's only so much a university can do when a kid would rather sit in his boxers playing on his X-box instead of making it to his 10am classes.

Re: Umd bulldogs 2010-2011

I think tUMD coaching staff dropped the ball on this one!! No one on the staff figured out that this kid needed help untill it was to late? From what I read Olsen wanted to stay but his hand was forced. To bad nobody helped him.

I don't think you can blame the school here. UMD knew the risks when they took this kid in the first place, when other schools would not have taken him, due to academic issues. I am sure he had access to all the academic resources he needed to stay eligible, and as an important player, I am sure UMD bent over backwards to help him. At the end of the day, college wasn't for him, and I doubt very much that he made the right kind of effort to help himself and his teammates. Losing kids in our sport for academic reasons is exceedingly rare these days, due in large part to the support services that schools provide. Dylan let his team and school down, not the other way around.

The problem is I doubt he thinks of it that way. He obviously didn't care if he screwed his teammates over and left half way through the year or he would have tried harder to stay eligible. I get that college is not for everybody, but if that is the case then don't go. He should have just played major junior if he didn't want to go to school.

In my opnion major junior is one of the great things about hockey in North America. In sports like football and basketball you see guys go to college who have no business there and only go because they want to play ball. At least in hockey most of the guys who play college hockey actually want to go to class and get a education. Even in the cases where they don't graduate, they still go to class and get the grades like every other student. The NCAA would be better off if Football and Basketball had major junior leagues and so would the schools. Of course we all knbow that will never happen because of money that would be lost.

But what about the SEC??

Re: Umd bulldogs 2010-2011

Its time to really make a hard run at the #1 seed this half of the year could start by a sweep of the gophers even tho it is about 2 weeks away good to start talking now

Re: Umd bulldogs 2010-2011

What about it? They wouldn't win every year like they do now and the money lost would be so much we all know a major junior league would never happen...

They pay their players down there, so its pretty much Major Junior already.

I hope they can sweep them. They need to make up for the disapointing weekend November. In the hunt for the MacNaughton...

Alex Stalock has been called up to the SJ Sharks. Sounds like he will just be the backup, but still very cool!

Re: Umd bulldogs 2010-2011

Good lord, Bulldog fan. No posts in this thread since January 24th? It takes an opponent's impending visit to resurrect this thread? Two weeks hence?

My wife and I just bought tickets to UNO's season ending series in your barn. If we're gonna win a WCHA regular season conference championship and MacNaughton Cup in our first year out of the box, it's gonna happen in your building, without question. Yeah, I know, a lot has to happen between now and then. And, I am sure you guys have other ideas. Well, we ain't missin' out on it if it does. Since we don't think hotel rooms are gonna be a big issue in Duluth, anybody have any suggestions about where to stay? Even though my mom's entire family is from Minnesota (jeez, my uncle played for St. Cloud State right after WWII) I have NEVER been to Duluth! We'll be looking for stuff to do. My wife is a chef and runs a culinary school and I know of at least one restaurant on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives that Guy Fieri has been to there. However, if memory serves me correctly, I think the place I am thinking of is only seasonally open. For some reason, I'm thinking he's actually been to two place there. We kinda make a project of going to places he's been to if we are in the neighborhood.

The nice lady in your ticket office told me today that only 600 tickets or so remain for the Friday, March 4th game and about 800 for the Saturday, March 5th game. Criminy, they won't sell them over the phone. Had to buy them through Ticketmaster. Got reasonably decent seats, too, given what is left. I'm guessing my wife and I will stand out like sore thumbs in UNO gear in your building. We'll be loners, too, since we aren't part of any organized UNO contingent that might be attending.

FYI, your new building looks really nice, albeit small. The Qwest Center here in Omaha seats 16,680 for hockey. I dutifully note that you guys are 4-1-0 against us, all time. The first two games were there (losses), in our inaugural year, in 97-98. Next two were a split, here, in 99-00. The last game was at our pre-season tournament we hold every year, the Maverick Stampede in 01-02 (on 10-12-01), a 5-2 loss. So, it's been a decade.

We have our own website now www.umdpenaltybox.com So most UMD fans post there.

My thoughts on the MacNaughton? Unfortunately the Sioux will probably win it. They have the easiest schedule. I look forward to having the Red Cows in our building. Should be a great matchup. First time I will have seen them live.

Places to eat? I love Pizza Luce, Burrito Union, The Anchor Bar (in Superior and where Diners, Dives and Drive Ins went to) and the ton of chain places in Canal Park. While expensive, I have always liked Grandmas food. Duluth Grill is another place that people love, but I have never been there.

You will stick out like a sore thumb. Nothing goes worse than maroon and red together.

I suggest you guys get a rink our size. 16,000 is way to large for your team. The only way you sell it out is if you offer super cheap tickets. I believe our rink is too big. When there are some lean years that place will be empty :(

Re: Umd bulldogs 2010-2011

Fishing season hasn't started yet, this is a no trolling zone...

@Red Cows, I second everything Biddy said. The only thing I'd add is to stay at a hotel in Canal Park. There are many to pick from and I doubt you will have a hard time securing a room in any of them this time of year. It's your easiest access to everything from food to entertainment. There are hotels in downtown Duluth that are connected by a skyway system, but they are further away and they forget to tell you that the skyway closes late at night. Personally, I like the Suites Duluth in Canal Park. If you have 5-8 people coming up with you, it's an awesome way to all stay in the same place. Their suites aren't like other hotels, they are very big and give you plenty of space for everyone to hang out. Website is http://thesuitesduluth.com/

I like the Suites too but their internet connection is crappy.

Re: Umd bulldogs 2010-2011

Would the Raddison be cheaper? You could walk through the skyways to get there. Not as convenient if you play to drink after the game in Canal Park.

But then you can puke in the skyways while walking back to your hotel. That's a plus.

Re: Umd bulldogs 2010-2011

Back again. It's UNO/UMD week.

Most of my family is from Minnesota and I have made countless trips. But, I have never been to Duluth. Sheesh, my grandparents had a place at Breezy Point Resort north of Brainerd for almost 50 years and I have never been to Duluth, even though it's only like a 100 miles from there and I have been there dozens of times and STILL vacation there every year. Looking forward to seeing Duluth, and, your new building.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I have an Uncle that has stayed at and recommended our staying at Fitgers's so that is where the "boss" has us staying. Fitger's even told us they'll take us to and from the games. I was all fire worried about getting tickets bought 3 weeks ago for both games and I note that neither game is sold out--yet. Kind of a surprise although this series is all posturing now. I'm real interested in seeing UMD since I don't know a lot about them other than you guys seem to be kind of limping down the stretch. Be advised that our power play has really stunk lately, although that may be a function of playing teams lately with great penalty kills.

UNO's Blue Line Club had planned a bus trip to this series but, it fell through for reasons I am unaware of. We don't (shame on us) belong to UNO's booster club. So, I guess we'll stand out like a sore thumb since I doubt that there will be a lot of UNO fans at the game since this series really only impacts Pairwise, and, the final conference standings, spots 2, 3, & 4.

FYI, our board is here:

http://www.mavpuck.com/

We'll be in section 221 on Friday night and section 222 on Saturday night. In UNO gear, we should be easy to find. I promise I'll buy beers for anybody that approaches me that says they saw this post.

Sudden thought. Do they serve alcohol in your building? They do in ours because the Qwest Center in Omaha is a city owned facility.

Re: Umd bulldogs 2010-2011

The Brewhouse and Mexico Lindo are two of my favorites and they are in the Fitger's complex. The Anchor was on a Viewers' Choice segment of Triple D, but Guy didn't go. Guy did go to: Gordy's Hi-Hat in Cloquet (seasonal and overrated), Northern Waters Smokehouse in Canal Park (outstanding), Duluth Grill on 27th ave west (outstanding), and At Sara's Table/Chester Creek Cafe which is one place on 19th ave east near the UMD campus (never been, but have only heard great things).
