Re: Umd bulldogs 2010-2011
Calamity. I'm a lifelong Michigan fan; my first two visits to Minnesota were for Michigan hockey (2002 FF and the subsequent Showcase at Mariucci). I got my heart ripped out in Buffalo. I paid good money to watch the hockey team on fuzzy cable feeds in meaningless regular season road games when I lived in California.
And then I moved to Duluth. The first hockey I saw in person was the brilliant OT win over NoDak last fall. All of my friends here are UMD sympathizers or fans. They are my "WCHA" team.
Alas, one of them is going to have to lose Saturday. And I dare say people aren't going to like the sweatshirts I wear around town very much.
May the best team win. I'll probably see some of you fellow Northlanders on the way down to the cities; pleasant jibes are welcome. The good news is that if "my" team loses it will be to a team who I not only don't begrudge a title, but would like to see succeed. The bad news? I live in the one place in the world that will provide constant reminders if Michigan loses.
And if they win half my wardrobe gets mothballed. Alas, the joys of hockey! UMD is a team that deserves success. I'm thrilled that they've made it this far--but couldn't they wait another year?
