UMD 2010-11 Season

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Bemidji now is tied with UMD in the WCHA standings for 4th/5th place, though UMD has 2 games in hand.
Nobody has games in hand; all eight teams have now played 19 games. The schedule does favor UMD over Bemidji, however.

Correct.. I read the overall column instead of the conference column.. been that kind of night..

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

I found a couple of things surprising (to me) in the box score. No Haley Irwin? Playing without Irwin makes UMD's already stern test against UW look even more daunting.

And can someone who was in attendance confirm what the box score says that veteran WCHA Assistant Referee Tai Thorsheim donned the orange stripes for this game to make an appearance as a full fledged WCHA referee?

I'd be willing to bet the pressbox staff messed up the names. Tina Simonson was listed as an A.R., and she's been a referee all season (and was partnered with Doocy when MSU visited Ridder two weeks ago.)

The local paper claimed Irwin was injured. My guess is her latest 10-minute conduct penalty from last weekend earned her a free seat in the stands. She didn't look very injured to me.

And ARM, that wouldn't surprise me. They had Martin listed as the starting goalie, but it was all Harss.

Maybe indirectly, if things snowballed. But she played Saturday after committing the penalty on Friday, and Coach Miller didn't seem angry at her after Friday's game -- at least not the "you're going to be sitting in the stands in a week" kind of anger.

If nothing else, the special edition black jerseys were kind of cool

From the DNT Column, "Eh?"

Wear your maple leaf at the game today

If you’re a fan of Canada and you’re going to the UMD women’s hockey game today, feel free to fly your colors.

A group of Duluth-Canadians will be there waving flags as part of a nod to the U.S.-Canada hockey connection, said Liz Taylor of Duluth Sister Cities International. Thunder Bay is one of Duluth’s several sister cities.

Word is a representative of the Canadian Consulate office will be there for a special recognition of the relationship following the second period.

Game time is 7:07 p.m. at Amsoil Arena.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Word is that Haley had (or has?) a concussion.. she played tonight and made some difference. Jamie Kenyon provided a nice boost of energy for UMD in the 2nd and 3rd periods.. she moved up to the second line at some point tonight and even scored the game tying goal.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Tina Simonson was indeed the 2nd referee this weekend (or 1st depending on your opinion of Doocy)

For those of you who haven't seen the billion pictures out there of the new Amsoil Arena, this is what $80 million will buy you in Duluth:

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

For the Jamie Kenyon fans.. it's her under the Badger who tripped her to no call.. though a minute later Irwin went down in the corner mostly on her own and got the makeup call. Still going through pictures, thought I might have one of her goal but only have the celebration

Schmoe - Why all the concrete at one end instead of having the seats go all the way to the ice?

The concrete in his picture is retractable bleacher seats for the men's hockey student section.. makes a superb place to shoot the women's games from, and very few places to shoot the men's games

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Kacy Ambroz goal on Saturday was a great individual effort, charging the net while shooting, then burying her own rebound on the other side of the net

The only shot I got during Kenyon's goal, the celebration with Friddy

I've shot 8 games in the new arena so far and I'm still finding all the better spots to shoot, while not getting in the way of people watching, AND not dealing with the glare/reflection of the yellow/gold seats off the glass

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

I don't know what anyone else thought . . . but it seemed to me that UMD came back in the 2nd WI game only after Miller put Holmlov, Irwin and Winberg back together. After that all the dominos seemed to fall into place. That line didn't score, but the way they play together seems to energize the other lines. The team seemed more comfortable again and started to attack the puck. I can see that she (Miller) was maybe trying to generate more scoring by breaking them up, but it sure didn't seem to work. I guess we'll see as things move forward.

Big series against Bemidji - the Dogs really need these two.

I'm sure it was a great play by Ambroz, but what is Wisconsin doing on this play. They have 3 skaters back, only one Bulldog is threatening, but nobody ties up her stick or puts a body between her and the net. It looks like Prévost is trying, but Prough isn't in the picture, and I'm not sure what Pacholok is doing. When I watch Duggan, Decker, and Knight, I'm ready to hand Wisconsin the trophy. Then one sees the Badgers making plays like this -- they just didn't allow these type of goals in their championship years -- and realizes they still have some things to clean up as well.

The game tying goal by Jamie Kenyon raises the same questions to their defense.. 3 or 4 Badgers around their net when she found herself wide open in front of the net with the rebound to bury.. If they have any weakness it's in their own zone.. their forwards do a great job of blocking shots which takes some pressure off the D behind them also.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Just looking through my pictures from that play, Ambroz was in all alone behind three Badgers. I don't remember why Rigsby was so horribly out of position, but Ambroz had already taken at least one whack at the puck by the time Prevost got there to give her a hit. I wasn't at a good angle to see what Pacholok did, but she was late to the play and Deluce was even later and not a factor. I think Ambroz was already knocking her own rebound in by the time they got there.
