UMD 2010-11 Season

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

I'm sorry, I keep hearing about these Lam twins -- apparently rainbows and unicorns shoot out of their butts? I saw none of that tonight. I saw something with them that looked like they were practicing their passing skills and nobody else on their line existed. Let's just call tonight's game, "Silence Of The Lams".

Martin was in the zone. The team worked the Torpedo well. All the freshman were hustling. It was fantastic.

..... I wasn't at all impressed by the miracle twins for North Dakota. They were entirely predictable, which isn't hard since they only seem to pass the puck to each other. ......

So the two of you are the "Anti Lam Twins" ?. We all know UMD is good. We are fine with that and appreciate your support for them. That is all good. There is however no need to keep on lambasting these two talented young ladies who suit up for YOUR NATIONAL squad and represent YOUR COUNTRY.

BTW, it is a long season. It is only one game. Don't count your chickens too early.

After at least six months of hype, I expected a little more, that's all. And I did say I'd give them the benefit of the doubt since yesterday was the first time I'd seen them play. Plus I'm a twin myself, so I get to rag on other twins if I want to.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

To a certain extent, I get what UMD fans are saying about Jo & Mo. I had similar thoughts the first time I saw them play at S-SM. They aren't that fast, or big, or elusive. A covered sister is always viewed as a better passing option than a more-open teammate. But they are relentless, and they can finish. Being by far the biggest threats in the UND lineup, I'm sure the 'Dogs gave them some extra attention, and shut them down last night. But before their careers are done, they'll do some damage to UMD, like they did on their last series in Duluth. Put any two stars from a contender on a team that finished last and lacked offense the previous year, and they will struggle at times.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

All good points, ARM. They'll struggle at North Dakota when they're up against better teams, but I'm sure they knew that going in. The Sioux will get better over time, but maybe not before the sisters graduate. I'm just saying maybe the hype was a bit much leading up to this season.

Three years is a lifetime in College hockey.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

They'll be better this year. The question is, how much better? I'm sure they'll be top 6 in the league. Probably top 5. Maybe even top 4. But I don't see them as top 3 this year. And thus far, I haven't seen that they are attracting recruits that are that much above what they got in the past. They got a bunch of Warroad commits, but I think the best prospect on that team is Sylvester, and she's bound for Madison.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

I was really looking forward to watching the game last night,to see my beloved bulldogs in action and i was curious to see what UND has this year. I was very impressed with my Dogs performance but i have to say if i were a UND player I would be a little tweaked to say the least!! it takes more than 2 players to win a game and what i saw was mostly selfish play out the Lams.I am not going to say they are not talented because i think we all know they have some strong points for sure, but what i will say is,those two need to lead. Its not enough that they are olympians.Good leaders set examples and make those around them even better, not try and do everything on their own. There are some good players on that team, but for the most part i saw the Lam show, and it wasn't working....

President George W. Bush suited up for MY COUNTRY for 8 long years. I didn't care much for him despite being the elected leader MY COUNTRY.

Plus, I enjoy cheering for the Canadians, Swedes, and Finns too-- because many of our players represent those countries in hockey action too. Gosh, 24 in total think. Not just 2.

You must not being paying attention then. ;)

Earlier this year, they got a commitment from Michelle Karvinen, who tied for the Finnish team lead in scoring at the Olympic Games. She was supposed to start playing at UND this fall, but didn't pass the NCAA Clearinghouse, so will start at UND next fall.

Then, in August, they got four more commitments from Europe (with two of them being Olympians as well):

It hasn’t taken long for Peter Elander’s Swedish connections to benefit the UND women’s hockey team.

This summer, the Sioux have received four verbal commitments from European standouts that play in the women’s Swedish Elite League.

Two of them — Sweden’s Cecilia Ostberg and Klara Myren — are Olympians. They were coached by Elander, the newly hired UND associate coach, at the 2010 Vancouver Games.

The others are Norway’s Andrea Schjelderup Dalen and Denmark’s Josefine Jakobsen, who have both been such dominant players in their own countries that they left to compete in Sweden.

All four are expected to join the Sioux next fall along with Minnesota Section 8 players Layla Marvin (Warroad), Shelby Amsley-Benzie (Warroad) and Leah Jensen (East Grand Forks Senior High).

All of those players join the team next fall.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Brutal game tonight. Not sure where to start. Hard to say, too, not being on the team.

Bottom line is that the Sioux stepped it up. Perhaps the girls were relaxed? Perhaps not as mentally fired up or focused as what I saw on Friday.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Can't say much about it. If you outshoot your opponent 32-19 and can't win, there's something missing. They just didn't look like they had the intensity that they had on Friday night. Congrats to the Sioux...they jumped on the opportunities they were handed.

Next weekend the championship banners go up and the Dogs start a decent home stand. That works for me. :D

Remember what I said just a day or so ago:

BTW, it is a long season. It is only one game. Don't count your chickens too early.

Gloating early tends to come back to haunt you.

P.S....Happy Thanksgiving. Turkey day today up here in Canuck Land.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Not sure how "haunted" anyone's going to be two games into the season. The Bulldogs did as much to beat themselves as the Sioux did to beat them. And I'm not taking anything away from North Dakota's effort. They played hard for 60 minutes and the Bulldogs didn't, a lesson I'm sure will be learned and reinforced before next weekend by both teams.

Happy Thanksgiving even if it's over. :D

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Per OnMAA, "Three years is a lifetime in College hockey." It appears 48 hours can be almost as long.:)

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Who's counting chickens? The 'Dogs stunk up the joint, Sunday. They didn't on Friday. I never concluded a Natty from it.

Happy Thanksgiving. I'm grateful for those who don't put words, or broad sweeping generalizations, into my mouth/ thoughts.

Gobble, eh?

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

I'm relieved that the #1 ranking is gone . . . let someone else wear the target . . . until the end of the season!! These bad games are gonna happen . . . let them happen early. And, kudos to UND . . . we all want more parity in the league, don't we?

We do. It's not fun losing, but it is the competition that makes the game worth watching. Ideally, the outcome is in doubt before every weekend, and the Ws in the standings count for something and were hard earned. Much as it was disappointing to see the Lamoureux sisters leave Minnesota, it is obvious that their presence in Grand Forks makes both the WCHA and D-I as a whole richer.
