UMD 2010-11 Season

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Why is Miller implenting a whole new system when her team is the defending NCAA champs?

She sees what she has on this team, and installs this system. They graduated 3 defensemen last season and only have 4 on the roster so it fits well. The team will pick it up fast, and as the game went on they got more and more chances while forechecking 3 players and rotating the defensive spot. It's going to be a lot of fun to watch their progress when they come home for their official season start after going to North Dakota next weekend.

I don't know how, but it was reviewed by the referee afterwards, and Kim Martin kept Iya's shootout attempt out of the net

It's nice to have some of the 'muscle' back this season as well:

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

I thought that the Whitecaps Roster was stacked with some amazing talent that would make for a good game tonight.
Playing the Whitecaps is a little like a spring training baseball game where the caliber of the opponent can vary depending on whether you get the full roster or a split-squad "B-team". I wonder if people like Ruggerio, Chu, Cahow, etc are even in the area or if their names are just left from the Olympic centralization. Still, the college teams are lucky to have the Whitecaps around, because they do always have a few players who are as talented as anyone.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

My understanding is none of the players you mentioned will be playing with the White Caps this season. However, one K.P.(formerly W) will be suiting up with the team as her schedule permits.

Good to hear!

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Interesting note on the Whitecaps games (I had to work football or I'd be at the UMD women's game obviously right now.. just got home) they're using the dreaded rule that you can't dump the puck shorthanded in their games with the WCHA teams.. I really hated the rule on paper.. and I really.. really hate the rule now :D

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

A win is a win, exhibition game or not. Winberg went down real hard and looked like she was holding her shoulder ala Friddy, but she came back to finish the game. Everyone looked good and I'm glad Lana got another game under her belt. The freshmen worked hard and that's good to see. And Jaakkola's not afraid to shoot...I like that.

Speaking of Lana, she added her own twist to the phrase "dinging one off the post" (see below)

I think the way the "torpedo" works.. the defense BETTER shoot or move the puck fast or they can have two opposition in their face right away.. wish I could have been there.. especially when the football game I worked was a 35-0 loss.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

For the first time against real competition I actually thought the Dogs played really good! The amount of hustle and tenacity was nearly unprecedented (for a UMD exhibition opener). Every one worked very hard and the number of scoring opportunities was huge! Once they settle on combinations and get used to playing together this year's version of the Torpedo will be a dynamic and vibrant scoring machine!!

The size, speed, muscle and finnesse that the returning players brings is simply incredible. It was just wonderful to see Irwin, Holmlov and Winberg out there together - that line's size, speed and savvy will be hard for many other teams to match. I also still think Haley Irwin is one of the most naturally gifted, instinctive players that has ever graced the ice for UMD. She's just an exceptional talent.

Very impressed by freshman Jaakola (D) and Gallop (F). Both show respectable speed and as someone else said, don't hesitate to mix it up and put in on the net.

Santa looked a bit rusty in her first period, but didn't allow anything after that - until the shootout. I thought it was a great way for her to reenter the mix. Taking on shots by the likes of Potter and Gavrilova!! Once she adjusted she looked confident and more than held her own.

I think we UMD fans will have a very exciting season indeed!!!

Team Canada 4 Nations Cup Roster announced:

http://www.hockeycanada.ca/index.php/ci_id/16980/la_id/1/ss_id/146275/nr_id/147138.htm

Congrats to Larouque and Irwin. Looks like the team is mostly last season's Olympic Team. Wong and Friddy got passed up, which is tough to see since we love them so here in Duluth.

We haven't seen the last of Wong, IMO and Friddy is worth her weight in gold here at UMD.

Now onto NoDak for the conference opener.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Not to be greedy.. but with Friddy's shoulder, we need her sticking to JUST the UMD team until she graduates

Not exactly. Eight new faces. I would consider that significant influx of new talent. Three of those eight were part of the Olympic Prep Routine, but they never made the team.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

In a Tuesday press conference talking about this weekend's series between the Sioux and Bulldogs, ND head coach Brian Idalski said he thinks Jocelyne Larocque is the best defenseman in the league.

Until his next press conference, please disregard anything I've said in the past regarding Idalski and his abilities as a coach. He clearly knows what he's talking about.

Okay Dogs...sic 'em.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Good looking game by the Dogs, a solid 60 minutes with very few lapses that I noticed. Everybody seemed to be on their game. I wasn't at all impressed by the miracle twins for North Dakota. They were entirely predictable, which isn't hard since they only seem to pass the puck to each other. Both were shut out tonight. Nice to see the Dogs spread the scoring around the roster and good to see the freshmen get ice time. All around a great effort and plenty of mojo to bring into Sunday's game. :D
