UMass Lowell: 2023-24 Season

This is so frustrating because this wouldn't be a problem if norm had built up and showed he could train talent. I'm sure he can but people only see that proof in nhl players. Players are looking towards their futures in hockey. We can't be the most elite Atlantic Hockey style program. There's too many others out there.

9 Players gone. While some were not suited to Division I hockey, losing three or four core players leaves one wondering how toxic the program has become. I am still surprised that both Scout Truman and Matt Crasa are still here. Tough decision for them with their lack of development and supporting cast. Let's be honest here, Norm Bazin is NOT an OFFENSIVE COACH. Our PP was nonexistent this year. His results to those of us that have followed the program the last 15 years or longer may think that the only thing OFFESNSIVE about Norm is his lack of drafting and then developing drafted and undrafted players alike to the pro game of style of speed, pace and transitioning to offense. Players like Lee, Master, Lohin, Barton, Campbell, Meehen -though he is back for a 5th year, CJ Smith, Brown and Gamberdella come to mind. I remember when some wags here with hubris mocked the flagship for signing drafted players with the remark “that the player must have pick the wrong UMass school.” I do not write frequently, and in the past pointed out our lack of recruiting and the lack of Norm’s in game adjustments. I always shook my head with Norm’s “I’ll have to watch the film on that to comment.” Were you not watching the game? Can this lack of success and roster flux leave player’s questioning a possible commitment to UMass-Lowell? This last season was terrible, and I don’t buy all the injury excuses, as that is just part of the game. Norm always prided himself on having plug and play players, but his own lack of recruiting came back to haunt him.

Other questions I had did the season included. Did the loss of Andy Jones on the defensive coaching side hurt more than the alleged defensive strength Norm brings to the table? Where was the AD in this mix? I know he was let go......but he should have expected more from the hockey program. Warning signs for me went off when Matt Brown left 3 years ago or so. Even though he had defensive lapses, he was unquestionably one of our better players. A good offense is a good defense. Besides how many quality scorers are stars on defense? Gave up my season tickets 3 years ago, watched them on ESPN+ but they played such an uninspired brand of hockey .......tough to watch. Once they fell behind, I knew they were not coming back.

Put me on the band wagon to bring in a new coach, with a new philosophy that can recruit. UMass coach Carvel and his assistant Barr now at Maine is the type we need. Solid recruiters and successful in developing players. Too late this year, but the Peter Principle is definitely on display here. Norm has reached his own level of incompetence. Situations change, college hockey has changed and if you cannot adapt, time to say bye bye.

The head coach drafts players and gets them drafted. Gotcha. Anything else? I mean, I've seen worse takes. Then there's a story ScottK told me once about 20 years ago which was peak fan bullshit.

The problem is that norm bit too hard into his own system in a critical period where he needed to sell to players with more talent than he already had on hand. In the end you need players that can score and hope for the NHL and when you have a system that doesn't score that is poison to those players.

I think in the end the faults are very simple. The solutions, sadly are not, when you are UMass Lowell and your coach doesn't excuse charisma. Blaise gave us players because of his charisma but mismanaged them due to poor relations. Norm took them into winners but norm bit too hard into working with late blooming defensive skilled engines. He put too little faith in his ability to turn Lowell into a latter day Maine. That's why we are stuck now. Sadly coaches get reputations fair or not that just can't be shook. I believe in norms abilities but I don't believe in the ability to wash away reputational taint.

Edit: If I could fire norm bazin and hire morn nazib I would do it in a heart beat. I'll buy the funny little Italian mustache and fake eye glasses if it helps

Look, there's no way they were ever firing Bazin after one bad year. But I think he has to know another year like this past season would be a major problem for his tenure here.

You never heard all this whining when the team was making the NCAA tournament.
There were questions about the recruiting philosophy back then as well. But your point is valid. Expectations change as (theoretically) improvements are seen. Since everyone makes the HE Playoffs, that's not a goal, but getting home ice is. Once that becomes a thing, then making the Garden for the HE semis. Eventually it's making the NCAAs, and on and on. This wasn't just a step back last year, it was suffering a landslide. I think most of us hope to see a recovery next season. I do believe most aren't ready to fire Bazin.

I'm definitely a 50/50 on this. We're going on three or four recruiting classes without a top end scoring threat... or someone with the chance to blossom into one. Lowell scored 72 goals this year, as a team, for the entire season. 2 whopping goals per game. BC's three freshman and Gauthier alone had 113. Many of us have been screaming about the recruiting since winning didn't seem to attract talent. I'd say my brother is rolling in his grave right now, but he was right there with Monty and Bob questioning the lack of a recruiting plan. Another season even close to resembling this past season and Norm's gone before April 1, 2025.

Some of us have been worried for awhile seeing the dynamic and playstyle on the ice change as either the game changed or the players we got changed. Even the last couple of NCAA years have looked off going in a weird direction. Loss of puck handling ability team wide, scoring dropping off. Personally, the NCAAs is always the real goal. Home ice is a good indicator but it is a side goal.

I think the addition of Boschetto was something this program desperately needed, but I also believe he is being hindered by the playstyle that is being brought by Norm and unwillingness to move from it. Like I've said before, we absolutely should be getting top Goaltending prospects here off of our playstyle but that hasnt been seen since Hellebuyck (not counting the portal). There has been a HUGE shift in the last 2 to 3 years in the game, I've mentioned it multiple times to Monty and others that if Norm wants to continue, he will need to adjust. I think Boschetto is trying to bring in these newer type of players needed, but because of Norms rep... we are getting those guys.

but because of Norms rep... we are getting those guys.

I don't think the edit processed as well but I said that I'd all be for firing norm and hiring a funny looking man with eyeglasses, a moustache, who looks suspiciously like norm with a few letters scrambled in his name. I believe in Norm as a person but I worry about Norm as a reputation because hockey people talk and they build a book on you fairly or not.

One my UConn friends wants desperately for us to fire Norm so they can have him... and yeah, I think if Norm took over UConn they'd probably win the league... but in the end it is Norm's fault to a degree that we haven't gotten the roster and the NIL era will do us no favors. I win the lottery and of course I'll be sugar daddying this program but the powerball gods have not seen it fit to bequeath its glories upon me.

Lowell will play their exhibition game as a road game at Bentley on Sunday, Oct tth.

The last time Lowell played an exhibition game on the road was a 5-0 win over Merrimack at Schneider Arena on October 20, 1990. Norm was a freshman on that team.

In fact, Lowell has only played 3 exhibition games in their history that were not home games. The other 2 were in the Division 2 era:

A 7-3 win over UNH at Snively Arena on November 12, 1982
A 1-0 win over Concordia at Stafford Arena in Plattsburgh, NY on December 4, 1982
