UMass Lowell: 2023-24 Season

I agree; that was a brutal head shot by Cafarelli. Inexcusable, even for this UNH fan.

The same UNH player (Cafarelli) that hit Truman took a major for a high hit on Vaarwerk in the 3rd period. He also tried to start something with Rheaume in the handshake line.

This season should come to an end on Wednesday and I'm truly glad for it. Two five minute majors and not one goal. I won't say this team has quit, but it's really making me wonder. Sadly so many of us saw this coming.

And FWIW, unless Bazin kills it in the portal, next year will be another slog. There's hope on the horizon, but that's not till the 2025/2026 season.

On the 1st 5-minute power play, Lowell was outshot 2-0. That's how bad it was.

Nothing has changed with the PP all season long, just awful. Actually, I haven't seen much improvement in their overall play this season. Still making the same mistakes, nothing is in sync. There's no push back or another gear. They don't win the one-on-one battles. Where's the intensity? Just a train wreck of a season.

I am hoping that Souza, if not the league, benches Cafarelli for Wednesday’s game.

notes since it won't let me quote... I haven't watched a game in awhile because I can't be bothered while doing other things. That being said.

Goaltending is not the issue when you score zero goals and your team has zero interest in playing hard. Your goaltender ain't saving 18 skaters that will not fight. Your goalie stops it from being 8 or 10 nothing.

UML/UMBC. This UML team is rather sloppy with the ball. Basketball is probably my worst of the major sports in understanding but its hard not notice the obvious. If they get past Byrant, Vermont will be tough. They have incredible troubles inbounding against the press against UMBC but survived. They also had problems in the game in Catonsville where I was at in person.

Womens lax... 8-0, bottom 10 schedule. I hope for the best but I think there's a reality check incoming. Didn't do further analysis of the roster but if the top players are freshmen and they don't "portal" away then that has a good sign. I use quotes on portal as non-basketball/football/mens hockey has had free transfer long before the current meta. when i checked it on thursday half the schedule had zero wins. edit: Just checked now... combined 6-37, remove Lowell and its 6-29... approximately 18% win rate.

Computer ratings have wlax as fourth of seven in america east.

I love hockey, but this is the first time in forever that I'm ready for this season to end. I've said it multiple times this year, this team wasn't entertaining. When they lost those three games in November back-back-back to BC and BU 3-2, those were fun to be at. After that, it just completely went down hill.

The one somewhat good stat was Henry Welsch finished 26th in the NCAA with a 90.6% save rate and 2.52 GAA.

Some absolutely abysmal stats:
62 (out of 64 teams) in goals per game as 2.06.
For a team that prides itself on defense, 46th in goals allowed per game at 3.20.
61st power play, 12.71%.
49th penalty kill, 77.05%.
Our leading point scorer was tied for 248th in the NCAAs.
Our leading goal scorer was tied for 147th.

Anyway, go Lowell MBB tonight.

Is anyone making the trip to Durham? Any word on how Scout Truman is doing?
I've only gone up there twice since I had the situation with that sheriff (and the first one was the next night because I wanted to prove that racist f* wouldn't win). And that took a lot of effort to convince myself to deal with going a few years later. I'm pretty sure it will take a lot more for me to do it again and tonight's not it.

I understand, I remember that.

UMass Lowell set to play Hockey East first-round game at New Hampshire (lowellsun.com)

“We have a few players who may or may not be able to go,” Bazin said. “We had a couple of guys take high hits.”

Team sweeps on the road… crickets
Solid offensive weekend… crickets
Number 2 goal scorer in the country… crickets

3-1 start & All on the road… crickets
I have come back to this post so many times this year because I didn't understand the point of taking a "victory lap" after two weeks against weak competition.

Dead last in Hockey East ... crickets.

11:57 of the second period at Amherst. That was the last time Lowell scored a goal. Currently the game is halfway through the third, we have now reached over 200 minutes since our last goal. Will the season end with three straight games being shutout?
