UMass Lowell 2022-2023: Valley Steamroller Edition

the reality is this team doesn't have the talent to reliably put away one of the worst teams in the nation. The power play is a testament to their inability to control passes.
And this keeps coming back to recruiting. We have no one we can rely on to find the net. Games played aren't even, but our leading goal scorer is 75th in the NCAAs. Our leading point getter is tied for 124th.

That was an embarrassing loss. They came out for the third like they'd already won.

I'm pretty much guaranteeing they win tonight, but I'm glad I'm not going. That was a shockingly good crowd last night and they gave us almost nothing. Yes, lots of shots. Some were even good chances. But the goals they gave up were utter garbage. And let's be honest, our two were fluky as hell.

I'm pretty disgusted by what's going on at this point. Hopefully 23 will be better.

There's not a lot of room for error when your only averaging 2.5 goals per game (44th) while giving up 2.1 (4th). The lack of scoring really puts pressure on the defense to play a near perfect game.

I had to laugh when they played Free Fallin' by Tom Petty as I was walking out of the Tsongas. All as I could think of was the pairwise, down to 20.

20 minutes of pointless hockey. I feel like every play isn't a plan but a random gambit. Yeah yeah, i'm generalizing sports but it feels moreso than usual.

edit: I wouldn't keep harping if I weren't getting very frustrated with what I see.

40 minutes of pointless hockey. I stop blaming the players and start blaming their coach. Why are the players making such terrible plays.

If it helps, UAA seems to have an ability to look really good against ranked teams like Western Michigan while simultaneously looking terrible against other terrible teams like Fairbanks.

Honestly I knew UAA was probably better than the bottom but I think with the USHL and the rest the bottom isn't what it was 20 years ago.

That doesn't excuse this weekend's output. It was bad and sloppy and having a few week layoff isn't enough of a justification

Me… “OMG, this is too rich.”
Yeah, I was wrong. I thought they had more fortitude, and apparently I gave them too much credit.

Bazin said before the weekend that will can beat skill, and whatdya know....

Tom, I went to the game on Friday- was one way traffic for sure but UAA kept a lot of shots to the perimeter (Whale for sure made a few clutch saves).

If Lowell misses the tournament, it’s 100% because of this weekend.

The Saturday game was pretty evenly played. I thought Lowell was on their way with that early goal in the first, but they gave it right back 30 seconds later on a nice tip by former River Hawk Matt Allen. A nice weekend for the Seawolves as they worked hard and took advantage of their chances. It will be interesting to see how things go at Maine.

When did they change their away sweaters? I always thought the ones with the Seawolf logo on the front were sharp.

Lowell up 3-1 after 2. After falling behind the Hawks with 3 goals, including a PP goal, in under a 3-minute span.

Glad they got the win against AIC. Back to league play this weekend with two at Maine (who, unlike us, swept Anchorage this weekend). Maine's been pretty good at home this year with a 5-2-1 record. Since getting swept by Merrimack back in mid-November, they've been playing good hockey going 6-1-1.

Bearer of bad news here. I think most of us on here knew him, so wanted to pass this along. Tony Patronick passed away a couple of days ago. Huge fan of Lowell hockey. Tough loss of a friend. Condolences to his family.

Thanks Monty. The athletic department sent 2 representatives to his celebration of life this past Saturday (Thanfully Lowell didn't lose to AIC during the funeral... that would have been a kick in the junk) and they told us that the game on January 20th against UNH will be dedicated to Tony.

For those on here who were at Lowell in the early 2000s, Tony started going to games starting with the final game of the 2002 season and was there night in and night out until he and my sister-in-law moved to Pennsylvania when she took a job with the Penn State women's team. His health started to take a turn for the worse while in PA and for the last year, they have been up in West Lebanon, NH. He was able to see his last game against Dartmouth (Again, thankfully they didn't lose that game). Over the years, Tony covered the River Hawks for the Connector while at school, and then he and Ryan started the River Hawk Hockey Blog. At games while in school, you could hear him, especially in those days, just flat out tormenting the opposing team's goalie, making it known to the refs that he "respectfully" disagreed with a call, or giving it to other team's fans from across the ice. He had a big heart and big soul and will be missed immensely. I've attached his obituary, which apparently made its way to Norm and even got Norm to laugh during the hockey season. I'd prefer if Norm would recruit more than laugh, but what can you do.
