Re: UMass Lowell 2015-2016 Season Thread II
Congrats to Lowell on a gutsy win. The character and resiliency this team has shown is special and usually is found in only select teams. The positives were that this team never quit despite not being on top of their game. They won enough puck battles in the offensive zone to get the job done. Defensively I thought they gave up more chances than they normally do but the good thing is that there were not really many second chances. I think Boyle would like the first goal back but was the difference and again kept the team in the game long enough for them to get a win. I like others, feel Lowell was pretty fortunate to come out with a win because they were not at the top of their game tonight. Unfortunately their play tonight showed some mistakes that we have seen before. Turnovers crept back in their game tonight especially at both blue lines. Lowell needs to be much better in the neutral zone. Their NZ play was never clean tonight and as a result never generated much speed or attack resulting in the "rush"offence being relatively non-existent. Finally the power play again struggled and Lowell lost some momentum in the game as a result. The passing was way too deliberate and slow with no real player movement. The defence have to have a "shot mentality" as 3 of the 4 defence they are using are always looking to pass and turn up shooting opportunities. It is obvious that teams are recognizing this in their scouting as they are not worried about the shot from the point and denying same. We saw some very good power plays this weekend and all have quick, decisive puck movement, quick player movement with players re-adjusting to the puck and creating open passing and shooting lanes where shots are not passed up. The coaching staff really need to give this some attention and get it worked out.
The encouraging thing is that for the most part of the season and especially at the end and in to the playoffs, Lowell has been better the second night especially coming after an effort where they were not at their best. Hopefully this consistency continues against a strong Q that has a potent attack and who like to play with some pace to their game.
