Welcome to the monster that we have created at Yost. Have your AD raise ticket prices to a point that very few students attend games, that's what our DB of an AD did.

Well, your AD is causing problems across the board... but yes, the people in charge are losing it.

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March

Were they really chanting that? That's about as raunchy as it gets.
If the school can't handle it, the league should step in with penalties if it continues.

Hell, BU was going to get penalized in the NCAA Regional if the BU students continued with 'BC Sucks' in their song. Harmless IMO, and a bit over board, but this chant about a kids mom.... WAY, WAY, WAY over the top, IMO. That's just pure filth. JMO.

When I thought it was just the mom's name being said I thought it was a pretty good chant. Now I agree. Pretty disgusted with that.
No place at all for that kind of thing. I remember Michigan saying some pretty unreal things but I'd rather hear the F word than chants like that about someone's mother.

Three times by my count. A few of us gonna write in to the Connector. The cymbal sound during the national anthem and the bull**** chant are pet peeves as well, but not sure the bs chants will go away.
I'm ok with BS after an egregious call, but one was after something where every single one of us knew it was going to be a call.

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March

When did Lowell become Scumherst and start saying "Sit down ******" for penalties?

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March

Pretty sure last year was still, "See ya, stupid"
Since I was one of the ones that brought the chant in about a decade ago, we have been saying stupid. Honestly, can't hear what the students say from my side, especially since the music is playing at the same time as well.

I think I have missed 4 home games in the last 4 years (not counting exhibitions). Its been sit down ****** for every game I have been to. Sections 104-8 might be saying something else, but that has been what the student section has been saying

Goon is the reason we added "stupid"... when I started going to games it was just "see ya".

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March

This just in: some students say stupid things.

The chants and cheers are going to change and morph as each group of students finds its identity. The student section has grown so large that it's immposible for any group of students to take the lead and show everyone how things go anymore. It's never going to be perfect (what that would look like, I don't know) but I think they've done a pretty good job representing the University to date.

He's on his way out, very, very soon.

The latest rumor that I have seen is the Brad Bates from BC will be the next AD and Jim Harbaugh will take over as Coach. Granted, I don't believe it but it comes from two different Michigan sports "journalists" (not affiliated with The University) who are typically fairly reputable. We'll see I guess (but guaranteed that Brandon is gone, probably Hoke too).

Things have a way of working out, the underclassmen will look to the upperclassmen for direction. Before that DB Brandon got to Michigan and screwed everything up we would have the ENTIRE EAST SIDE of the rink filled with students.

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March

Your students have to pay to get in?

Michigan Hockey is a big deal so yes they must purchase tickets. Only season tickets are sold too. Back when I was a student it was $9.50 a game. Last year they were $22.50 a game. Brandon lowered season tickets to $150 for this season (which is on par with what I paid years ago) but I haven't been to Yost this year yet plus conference play hasn't started yet. I'm not sure how well it worked. IMHO it will take years to build up the student support to the level it once was.

I agree... Need to get the horde to grow up somehow

I will make a note that to me it seems like a large portion of the student section is freshmen. Main way I have been able to tell is during the introductions of the opposing team they still say "Who cares, you suck" to their goalie instead of the "sieve" chant. Seems to me like it's half freshmen, half upper classmen but part of the upperclassmen are the fraternity types that will encourage the more explicit chants.

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March

Finally getting really into Hockey East play, with 4 straight league games coming up. UNH's 2-2 record, to me, is deceptive. They did beat a weak CC team at home, but split against Michigan at Yost (giving up just 3 goals in the two games), and lost to last year's National Champs at home. They've only given up 8 goals in 4 games (which matches what we gave up to Michigan in one game).

This should be a good match-up for the Hawks, as they hope to continue their good start to the season. Thanks to a scheduling conflict that keeps me from going to Columbus this weekend for the Revs playoff game, I'll actually be at the Tsongas Saturday.

How dare you interrupt the talk about student crowds and post about hockey.

Thanks for pointing out the article. Gambardella is one of my favorite UML players primarily due to his constant hustle and determination every time he steps on the ice.

I came across on old article from silive.com (which I think is Staten Island's version of boston.com) about Gambardella and it talked more about his background; he essentially had to go around to various Junior teams asking for tryouts. One of them offered him a tryout and the coaches really did not think we would make the team. But it was something about his tenacity and desire that kept them from cutting him. He began to blossom as a player and things progressed from there.

Here is an interesting tidbit that offers a little insight re: Bazin's recruiting style... as Joe became more successful with his Junior team, there were something like 5-6 other schools along with UML who were recruiting him. Joe took a puck to the head and it shattered a good part of his face. He finished the game in typical tough hockey player style after receiving a bunch of stitches. then had surgery not too long afterwards. Anyway - now that I have set it up - here is a direct copy/paste from the silive.com article:
"From the first time we talked, they were up front and respectful and honest. The head coach (Norm Bazin) called me after I got hurt to check on me. That goes a long way with me and my family."

Alright, there was nothing incredibly remarkable about what Coach Bazin did... but the small gesture of the call following Joe's injury on top of how he (Joe) was handled from the beginning by UML obviously helped pave the way for Joe to choose UML over the other schools. Anyway, I found that little glimpse into the recruiting process interesting.

For whoever is interested - here is a link to the article I referenced:
