UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March Thread II

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March Thread II

We will never get the blue chip recruits. We will get the kids who want to go to College, play in front of good crowds, and play for Norm.

.... and win championships!

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March Thread II

The "flagship" has a bigger budget than Lowell and will always beat us in the recruiting department. What we have at Lowell is a Coach that played here, understands the City and style that Lowell plays, and CARES.

How many times does Norm say, "Lowell Hockey?" when he is interviewed?

There's actually no conceivable reason that Amherst is getting the players they are. A perennial bottom feeding team with a joke of a coach and an athletic department that has your sport fourth on their priority list.

Aside from Merrimack, what does Amherst have to offer over another Hockey East school? If you want to play for a big state school, UNH, Vermont, Maine and UConn are better options. If you want to play for a top coach, Lowell, BC and Providence would be at the top of your list. The Boston schools have the Bean Pot and a great educational and hockey reputations (well...maybe except NU). Providence is your small, private school option. ND is ND. I could see a recruit picking Amherst over Merrimack if they didn't like the high school rink or the high cost of attendance if you're only getting half a scholarship, but coach wise MC blows Amherst out of the water too.

I just don't understand how they're getting recruits like Montour and Vatrano to commit in the first place.

Probably just a chance to get ice time in HEA against all those other things you just mentioned

Recruits like Vatrano and Montour could go to any HE they wanted. That's the puzzling part.

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March Thread II

I think the Lowell fan base should have a meeting with Norm.
Demand he trade the Lowell roster for the flag ship's roster.
Then the Lowell fans will be happy!
Fixed. :D

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March Thread II

Not.
Do your homework.
Agree. I have no idea about those 2 but to say good players can play anywhere is not true. There are more things involved than just what you can do on the ice. Stuff like personality, parent personality, academics, what the team needs, what $ you can offer, and probably more if you really think about it.

If you are already on the radar and you go play somewhere awful who offers a lot of $, you get tons of ice time, learn to play in adversity....then you leave after a short time- without debt and go on your merry way.

Maybe not completely accurate but probably not far off the mark

Not to mention that pesky NCAA Clearinghouse and institutional Admissions Departments. ;)

I'm talking about a talent perspective. Those two are good enough to play anywhere in Hockey East. That's a factual statement.

He was chiming in because Vatrano left BC for academic reasons. There's a reason he was recruited there in the first place. It didn't work out, and that happens, but to suggest he didn't have the talent to play for any team in the league is just flat out incorrect.

That goes double for Montour. If Montour had opened up his recruiting to every team in Hockey East he'd have had 12 full scholarship offers on the table.

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March Thread II

There really is no excuse for UMass-Amherst to be so bad for their history in hockey east minus a couple of good years with Quick.

Any recruit with a brain would go to Lowell over Amherst based on the education and quality of coaching/excitement of the hockey program.

Nice to see Scott Donnelly tweet out a picture of a long line of students waiting to get their tickets for this weekend.

But only at one of those schools can you riot because the day ends with a Y.

Where did I suggest they didn't have the talent to play anywhere?

I'm actually chiming in because some of you Lowell fans crack me up. In one sentence you're dumping all over the flag ship, the players, the coach and the program. In the next sentence you want those players on your team. How many voices are there in your heads? :D

And don't forget WBZ-TV's Danielle Niles and Fox-25 Sarah Wroblewski are UML alums.

And it's Cambodia, not Laos, in terms of the second largest Cambodian population outside of Long Beach, CA (not Laos in the interests of fact checking - :))

Uh yeah, that's what the conversation was about. How is Amherst getting these recruits when the program is garbage. Maybe read what people are saying before looking like an idiot?
