Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March Thread II
Well, that was some of the worst 40 minutes of hockey Lowell has played this season.
The Good
- Very little to take away from that game as good. The PP did well, saving this from being a complete stomp.
- Lowell actually looked good in the first. Which makes it all the more puzzling how they could be so awful in the 2nd and 3rd.
- ND was very chippy. Lowell obliged with some nice hits
The Bad
- The seeming inability to make a tape to tape pass all night, save for the lone PP goal in the second. 5x5, Lowell's offense was beyond putrid. Notre Dame collapsed on them any time a player carried the puck into the zone and forced them behind the net where they inevitably lost it. Dumping the puck wasn't any better; the Irish beat them to the puck almost every time.
- Six shots on goal from the beginning of the 2nd till the time ND scored their third goal. Woof.
- We're back to playing "Let's Throw The Puck Into Space And Assume I Have A Teammate There" hockey. Does Bazin give out helmet stickers for making blind passes into space that end up squarely on the stick of an opposing player?
- No 5x5 offense. Is there anyone who was at the game who honestly felt like Lowell had a chance in hell at scoring a 5x5 goal after the first period? Their offense zone time on each rush could be counted down on two hands. If there was an attempt at a pass to a scoring area it was quickly swallowed up by Notre Dame and headed the other way. Lowell spent so much time in their zone that every rush was slowed by the need to change out the skaters, so the two forwards bringing the puck up had no help.
- They looked lifeless out there in the last 40. They didn't start playing until ND had taken the lead, and by then it was too late.
The Ugly
- Campbell took a hard shot and was obviously hurt. He went right down the tunnel and never returned to the game. They cannot afford to lose a player of his caliber.
- Lowell has dropped to 17th in the PWR. I'm not an expert on the maths, but from what I'm looking at I don't see anyway Lowell makes the tourney unless they reach the HE tourney finals. A win tomorrow and a loss in the semi's isn't going to be enough.
So Lowell has done a perfect Jekyl and Hyde routine through the first two games of this series. If they play like that again tomorrow their season is over.
edit - The 2nd and 3rd ND goals were brutal, for different reasons. Suter with a horrific giveaway on the game tying goal, and Kamrass breaks his stick on a point-to-point pass and ND gets a virtual 3-on-1 and buries it. Double woof.
