UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March Thread II

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March Thread II

I'm still having a false hope that Merrimack makes a come back and makes it that much less stressful on us in Boston
There's still work to be done. Hopefully the Hawks can take care of business tonight.

1-0 through 1... was ready to say that we had a lot of great play but nothing quite finding the net... PP goal takes care of that.

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March Thread II

Well, that was some of the worst 40 minutes of hockey Lowell has played this season.

The Good

- Very little to take away from that game as good. The PP did well, saving this from being a complete stomp.

- Lowell actually looked good in the first. Which makes it all the more puzzling how they could be so awful in the 2nd and 3rd.

- ND was very chippy. Lowell obliged with some nice hits

The Bad
- The seeming inability to make a tape to tape pass all night, save for the lone PP goal in the second. 5x5, Lowell's offense was beyond putrid. Notre Dame collapsed on them any time a player carried the puck into the zone and forced them behind the net where they inevitably lost it. Dumping the puck wasn't any better; the Irish beat them to the puck almost every time.

- Six shots on goal from the beginning of the 2nd till the time ND scored their third goal. Woof.

- We're back to playing "Let's Throw The Puck Into Space And Assume I Have A Teammate There" hockey. Does Bazin give out helmet stickers for making blind passes into space that end up squarely on the stick of an opposing player?

- No 5x5 offense. Is there anyone who was at the game who honestly felt like Lowell had a chance in hell at scoring a 5x5 goal after the first period? Their offense zone time on each rush could be counted down on two hands. If there was an attempt at a pass to a scoring area it was quickly swallowed up by Notre Dame and headed the other way. Lowell spent so much time in their zone that every rush was slowed by the need to change out the skaters, so the two forwards bringing the puck up had no help.

- They looked lifeless out there in the last 40. They didn't start playing until ND had taken the lead, and by then it was too late.

The Ugly
- Campbell took a hard shot and was obviously hurt. He went right down the tunnel and never returned to the game. They cannot afford to lose a player of his caliber.

- Lowell has dropped to 17th in the PWR. I'm not an expert on the maths, but from what I'm looking at I don't see anyway Lowell makes the tourney unless they reach the HE tourney finals. A win tomorrow and a loss in the semi's isn't going to be enough.

So Lowell has done a perfect Jekyl and Hyde routine through the first two games of this series. If they play like that again tomorrow their season is over.

edit - The 2nd and 3rd ND goals were brutal, for different reasons. Suter with a horrific giveaway on the game tying goal, and Kamrass breaks his stick on a point-to-point pass and ND gets a virtual 3-on-1 and buries it. Double woof.

HEA Finals + Luck...

We really needed that sweep and then hope that things went predictable.

---

Poor responsibility of the puck in the last two periods. Already mentioned but you can't just throw it up ice and you especially can't be so careless you throw it to the other team.

Nice writeup Patronick. I don't know why but it sure looked like we were the team that played almost 15 periods last weekend and then got in a plane and not ND.

Some of our woes were caused by ND clogging passing lanes but as you said the passes weren't often on the mark to begin with.

This may also have been the only chippy game I've seen called tight to start and then the whistle largely put away after that. Not an excuse, just an observation; lots of stuff let go both ways

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March Thread II

Dissapointing night but not all that surprising. Everytime it feels like this team is ready to turn the corner with an impressive win during the 2nd half of the season they follow it up with a bad one. An NCAA bid is a long shot at this point, however a 20 win season and the opportunity to finish no worse than 8 games above .500 is up for grabs. Hopefully with the season on the line Lowell will respond and deliver.

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March Thread II

If they ref things like they did the last 2 nights they should have med flight ready for this game. Wow are they letting things go. (Both sides, not excusing the loss)

So hopefully Vermont or UNH pull out the win tonight. Its stressful enough as it is with our season being on the line but knowing that BU is waiting is not a great congratulations for making it through the quarters

Yeah and after last night I think we need at least 2 wins to make the NCAA.

No Campbell this afternoon....too bad

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March Thread II

I'd be quite happy with a win today and at peace with the HE championship beyond that is the proverbial gravy.

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March Thread II

long way to go... 4-1 through 1

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March Thread II

to add... the camera had a rear view for the beginning of the first... which gave a nice view of the first goal... goalie had the left hand side open, defenseman screened him, and the shooter (I forget) found the hole just as it was scripted.

ND is still playing very good... ND's goalie is iffy... Lowell buried all their chances... and again... long way to go

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March Thread II

ND looking very strong... but so is Lowell...

6-2 through 2
