UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March Thread II

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March Thread II

Unbelievable... Lowell gets two and then gives one right back. 5-2 Amherst.

The train is definitely off the tracks. I agree with ScottK that Bazin puts Boyle in because he sees what's going on at practice. But I'm ready to say let's move on. If Smith really is your goalie of the future, then start him. Otherwise we're going into next season with really untested goalies again.

I was saying the same thing last night. The coaching staff must feel that Boyle is their best option. It makes you wonder what's going on with Smith and Kälkäjä. Goaltending has been a concern all season long but I don't put all the blame on Boyle for the recent slide. The Hawks have really struggled lately especially in their defensive zone with costly turnovers and missed assignments.

Another tough one tonight. It's too bad the Hawks missed on that penalty shot in the first period to take the lead. Hopefully they can get back on track next weekend.

UMA has some pretty nice offensive players (Vatrano, Kravchenko and Montour) with more in the pipeline.

So basically the holes are starting to show up... the only thing I'm worried about longer term is goalie... I don't expect the new guys to steal the show, but the fact that they aren't rotating at this point is a concern... who is going to step up long term? Have we recruited a goaltender?

Admin finally approved my account.

Anyways, my Freshman year at UML (2009), we had Carter Hutton. Sophomore year we had Doug Carr. Junior and Senior Year we had Carr and Helebuyck. All of which are either in the AHL or NHL. Who do we have now? A transfer from Amherst (horrible) and a Freshman.

I don't understand Bazin's fascination with Boyle. The guy gives up really bad goals. One thing I've noticed with Smith is he appears to move very slow side-to-side. Haven't really been able to WATCH him much considering he's barely played.

I'm not putting UML's struggles all on the goal-tending, but they don't have any "core" players anymore. Losing Christian Folin last year was huge. Also, Josh Holmstrom, Wilson, Arnold, several others.

I think they'll make the hockey east playoffs, but their chances in making the national tournament are looking bleak.

Mr les said Boyle was pretty impressive last night. Seems to me he has a consistency problem. Flashes of brilliance and then....well, then.....

Leaving that aside NO goalie is invincible if the D hangs them out to dry which was clearly a problem Friday night. Looks like we are having the rebuilding year that we thought we were going to skate by.

Boyle was pretty impressive in the 1st period. In the 2nd, the D left him hanging on all 3 goals. The 4th goal he'd probably like back, and I don't really recall what happened on the 5th. Boy was not the problem last night. The defense wasn't that good, plus, when your only offense for the night comes in a 20 second span and on the power play, that's not a recipe for success.

Definitely agree with the consistency problem. He was pretty **** good in the second period on Friday, but just seems to lose it at times.

And yes, the defense hasn't helped him out ... I think we/I just got spoiled the last few years when the defense made a mistake, the goalie bailed them out. That's not happening right now.

I've been a bit worried since that Maine game about where this team is heading. Needing OT to beat them wasn't a good sign, not at home.

Then they blew a 2 goal lead at BU, losing in OT. Then Providence just smoked them twice. They bounced back to play a hell of a game at MC, but lost by a goal, before winning the next night. And now this weekend, one of the worst under Bazin's reign.

We are still in third place, but only one point ahead of PC and two of ND, both having 2 games in hand on us. You don't want to fall out of the top four and then potentially have to go to ND for the second round. Gotta fix it soon...

It's amazing they're still in the PWR picture (15) with the way things have been going.

Re: UMass Lowell 2014-2015 Season: The March to March Thread II

Some stats that show how bad the last 9 games have really been:

Power play: 4/34 11.8%
Penalty kill: 22/33 66.7%

Goaltending: 3.33 GAA, .880 Save Pct (30 goals on 250 shots)
Offense: 6.3% shooting percentage (18 goals on 285 shots)

C. J. Smith has 6 goals in the last 9 games.
Adam Chapie has 5 goals in the last 9 games.
The rest of the forwards combined have 4 goals in the last 9 games (and the defense has 3)

If some of the other forwards can start scoring, things might start to improve. Ditto for the power play. Get it going, and things will start to get better. The penalty kill has looked better since the disastrous stretch against BU/PC. That needs to continue to improve too.
