Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread

From the people who went, in general how did the team look? Obviously they scored a lot of goals tonight, but were they skating like they did last year? Were they physical? Were they winning the race to loose pucks?

Yes, on all counts. There were a couple of times where they had troubling getting the puck out of the zone again, but for the most part, it was clear they were the better team all night long.

Freshman D Christian Folin did not play the 3rd period due to injury, so Houk moved back to D in the 3rd. (The 4th line was Lyles-Wright-Houk).

Good point... nice to get the goal-splosion going... they were saying on the radio that last year's seniors were rather displeased with how the UNH game went... message received, apparently.
Huh....good to know. Although, let's be fair, UNH is (at the moment) the Real Deal this year. They just gave up their 2nd goal in what, 5 games?

I agree with Scott. The team worked hard and the puck finally started to go in. This should help to take some of the pressure off. Hopefully the Hawks can build on this effort against Princeton. I wonder if Norm will give Connor Hellebuyck a start on Saturday.

Bob, I would like to see a similar effort on Saturday against Princeton before I start to feel this team is off of the schneid. One had to assume all of this pressure building behind the dam was going to release at some point and that the on-ice leaders were finally going to show. I'm sure it wasn't perfect, but nonetheless, it was very important league victory on the road where UMass (to their credit) have given BC, BU, and UNH fits at the Mullins Center. We may be looking back to this game as a season-saving game because a loss last night would have snowballed.

As far as Hellebuyck on Saturday, I don't think this a viable move for the team at this point because I do agree with the thought made by some where the juggling of lines to make something work has actually been a partial detriment for the team. Carr should get the start for the remainder of the semester, then start Hellebuyck for the Bentley game. If any of the games are out of hand, especially Princeton and Harvard, then bring in Connor. I just don't see how he can get a start while this team is below .500. No disrespect to him, but the team needs wins to get back into the home ice conversation with HE points. I'd like for us to get four more HE points before the break in the three games remaining, leaving 17 league game to play.

I'm very concerned about the penalties that were mentioned last night. Say what you want about the ticky-tack penalties that will be called but I think we can all agree they have taken far too many cheap penalties and you can't expect them to win on a consistent basis if this continues. Both of UMA's goals last night came on extended 5x3 PPs which were greater than a minute long. No goalie can be called upon to be the hero in these situations.

One quick note, both of their road wins on large ice sheets...something to think about for UNH next week.

In summary, I'm glad that the team did answer the call with a quality win. Let's see if this victory can springboard them to a season which at this point still is very salvageable.

UMass' win over Vermont tonight drops Lowell into 8th. But Vermont is 1 point ahead of the Hawks, having played two more games, and UMass is 2 points ahead with 2 games played (and Lowell currently owns the tiebreaker).

I'm not going to worry about that yet... I'd worry about keeping up the intensity against the next opponent.

As a fan, and with the way this team has played thus far, I like keeping an eye on games in hand, positioning etc. Right now though, I'm praying this team got whatever it was in their system out and can start playing like we all think they can. Getting a couple of wins to close out the first semester would be great. I don't expect them to go 4-0, but they do need to take at least 4 of 6 points available against HE opponents, and that will be tough with 2 against UNH.

Hockey East's non-conference record continues to take a beating. Merrimack tied Colgate 1-1 at home, while UVM got smoked at home (not surprisingly) by Minnesota 5-1, and St. Lawrence won at NU 5-2.

*wince* Let's hope we can buck this trend, hmmm?

Also, UNH and CC tied 4-4. UNH blew a 4 goal lead. The Wildcats play DU tonight.
