My first thought was there is something wrong with it if it isn't successful. UVM looks like they have a lot of talent- esp the goalie who was quick and made some awesome saves! The style of the game they played seemed to work against them. You get the puck, dump into the zone and peel off to make a change with no forechecker? This happened a bunch of times but eas really noticable in the 3rd. I was relieved when it happened but completely baffled. I went from holding my breath to sitting back in my chair. Why back off when you could press, even with one guy, to keep the other team honest?

We had problems with finishing and a few turnovers on defense... Otherwise they looked about the same... To be honest, outside of MAYBE the early BU game I haven't seen Lowell so thoroughly dominate a team. But in the last 5-15 feet they sucked and sucked royally.

Edit: to that end, how many offensive opportunities did Lowell get on Vermont's power play... I stopped counting around 3-4

I think this one is in "file it away" territory, as in you can't necessarily conclude from the contours of that game that the 'Hawks have conditioning issues, but I had already filed away that they also looked like the much more fatigued team in game 3 of the HEAQF. So now I have two instances filed away. I will concede, though, that the 'Hawks sleight size might have had somethingto do with the late-season fatigue last year, which isn't a "condition" issue per se.

I thought UVM was the better team for the 1st ten minutes and then UML took over during the last part of the first and all of the second. Third period I would give to UVM. Lowell did not play disciplined hockey. #21 looked way out of place on D and #4 looked over his head at times - stupid penalties!!! Where was Furlong? Injured? He was solid last season at D and picked up his game as the season went along. UVM's goalie played very well but the team is otherwise very undermanned. Lowell was rusty, UVM looked untalented.

Having a five minute major and a two minute 5-on-3 helped UVM in the third, but even with that they only outshot Lowell 8-6 in the period.

Houk (#4) has picked up way too many penalties in just two games, that has to be fixed ASAP. Sinitsyn I thought looked good at times, but we'll see how his play develops over the season. Remember, he just turned 18 this June.

I'd be surprised if we didn't see Furlong in Denver (I don't believe he's hurt).

I thought Folin had a few tough shifts Friday night also. It's going take some time for some of these guys to get use to the speed and skill of the DI game. Not only is Sinitsyn young but Friday was his first game in a year and a half, and the last one was at the Tier 1 Elite level. I think they will all be ok once they get some playing time, the talent is there. Agree about Houk, the penalties have got to stop.

It will be interesting to see who makes the trip to Colorado. I believe they usually bring an extra defenseman and forward on a trip like this. The next four games will be interesting.

I'm hoping the troubles Sinitsyn had were because he hasn't played competitive hockey in 18 months. He had some bad passes and I assume forgot about hybrid icing as he got beat getting back for an icing call.

Furlong had a really tough end to last year. He had defensive lapses that led to way too many odd man rushes. The one that really stands out is when he just flat out fell backwards and allowed PC to walk in during the QFs last season.

Houk kind of reminds me of Domish. Hits, has good speed, and is more offensive than defensive...

It is tough breaking in two kids who haven't played a competitive game in a combined 2.5 years, especially when you are a top 10 team in the country and expecting bigger results. There will be some growing pains but at least they have 2 other options (Eisermann/Furlong) who can come in and be servicable if needed.

I don't think Friday was a bad game, more just the result that left a bad taste in everyone's mouth. Classic first game of the season things though. Two anxious penalties of jabbing at the goalie trying to make a play, forcing shots and just an overall "rushy" attitude with the puck. If these are still problems by the time November rolls around then I think there can be some worries. A point is a point in HE so not all is lost. Could have been worse, we could have lost to Northeastern...

Excited for Colorado in general, I've heard both places are great to watch a game and should be some good hockey. Let's just hope for better results.

Couple of thoughts from my perch...

As mentioned, the penalties absolutely killed Lowell in this game, going 6 for 23 minutes and undoubtedly a key factor in this game. While the penalties were problematic, I did enjoy the second period as Lowell pretty much had their way with Vermont. Unfortunately, they did everything but score. The lone concern I had was the River Hawks tried to get too cute with the play making and it cost them some even better chances than they had during the period. One could even make a solid argument that this could be said for the entire game. Lowell passing was abysmal for the entire game as I didn't see too many clean breakout or entry passes as all.

One of the problems that I still see from last year Lowell struggles mightily against teams whom are physical, get under your skin, and play a defensive-minded scheme. It seems to frustrate the offense of the team and it simply filters down to the defense. It's a good thing we have Doug Carr or Lowell very well may have lost this game.

I'm sure we are going to see some changes this week for the Colorado games. Hopefully, we can salvage one of the two games, but returning home empty-handed going into a BC weekend will start the panic button talk. The national pollsters dropped Lowell four places this afternoon, so I'm sure the "one-hit wonder" talk will be brought up if Lowell fails to gain any points this weekend.

Do not like the lack of goal judges behind the net in Hockey East league play this year. Somehow that's going to screw a team at some point during the season, or at the very least, increase the amount of reviews. I'm all for technology but the human element should take precedence and go to the technology when it is absolutely needed.

Finally, thoughts are with our hockey friends tonight after former Merrimack and UNH coach, and more recently, former Malden Catholic AD Chris Serino passed away earlier today after a long and valiant fight with cancer. He was only 63 years old.

Geez, we aren't starting this already, are we? We shouldn't hope to salvage anything. Four points is possible... I see no reason to buy into the hyper of Denver and CC just like I don't buy into the hype with BU/UNH/Maine (I'll exclude BC because they seem to be on an entire different plane of existance now). There are some rough spots... guess what, Denver hasn't played an NCAA game yet, they're going to have rough spots too.

Play our game and we'll be fine. There are already enough built in excuses for this season. Its way too early to be saying "oh dear, we're dead again".

A few of my thoughts,

-Carr looked pretty solid, hardly a rebound to be seen. The goal he let up was not entirely his fault, but I'm sure he would like another shot at it.
-As many have said already, penalties, penalties, penalties.. just painful. At least our PK looked good (against a bad PP).
-Ryan McGrath showed a ton of fight. Definitely will be a factor this season. However I agree with the fact that he shouldn't be on the top line.
-We should use our defensive offensive weapons more. I can only remember 2 or 3 good shots from the point.
-I miss the goal judges, and I think the common student does too. Example being the puck on the outside of the net which most of the student section thought was in.
-Indoor fireworks, pretty awesome.

Anyway, cant wait to listen to Bob this weekend. To those heading out there, have fun!
