Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread

These aren't "kinks". This is a trend. Two games played. Two goals on 77 shots. 12 penalties for 35 minutes.

And on what god forsaken planet do you not start one of the top goalies in the country? Someone explain that to me in a way that makes sense. How does Carr not start that game? There's no excuse for it.
As usual the glass is half full with a hole in it. I'm not happy with the outcome but I'm not reactionary enough to jump ship yet. Carr had way too much ice time last yr with no back up they could use comfortably. This was a non-conference game. Why not give the kid a shot? He was doing OK after 2 (when admittedly I fell asleep) and if he had won you wouldn't have been wailing. The 2 he gave up that I was listeneing to weren't awful goals. I was much more concerned with the lack of ability to put it in between the pipes.

It's pretty confusing to this outside observer. Don't know the message the coach is trying to send to Carr, except that he doesn't think his goaltender is a true #1.

If that's not it, someone should explain the PWR to coach and tell him the importance of OOC games against quality opponents.

I don't buy it.
John Muse, as a freshman in 2007-2008, played 44 games and a total of 2,725:05 minutes.
His backup that season, EMPTY NET, played in 21 games and a total of 8:34 minutes.
Muse's team won the National Championship that season.

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread

I highly doubt Carr does not know what the coach feels or that he doesn't know he is #1 goalie. Pretty sure Carr had some nagging injuries last yr. It is 2 games in. WHy not give the kid a shot. Also- is DU that bad that we aren't giving them credit for playing a good game?

Personally, I think Carr should sit and the kid get his shot NEXT weekend. ;) :D

i was stunned when i read the game recap that Carr hadn't started. If the other kid is a freshman, start him at home against a lesser opponent, IMO, but what do we know?

Bazin said he was hoping that Hellebuyck would be able to spell Carr more often than he was last year, so it's not that he's trying to send a message that Carr isn't the #1. He probably should have started Carr last night and Hellebuyck tonight against CC.

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread

Couple of things from after watching the games via Internet. (Apologies in advance as doing this from my phone)

- sinistyn is still not ready, he has gotten burned, knocked down and been out of rhythm for two games. I am not seeing the same player others are seeing
- houk is not a fan of mine either... FIRST--Way too many penalties, carries the puck into the zone, stays on the offensive side without transitioning back to his position on D. I would rather Lyles and Eiserman out there to be honest.
- while I didn't understand Carr not starting, "helli" was excellent for two periods. Even the DU announcers were shouting his praise. I was ok with him starting, and this shouldn't be the concern for Lowell. That 5 on 3 rattled him a bit.
- we have scored two goals, both by holmstrom, and that's the big concern fellow river hawk fans. Carr or no Carr - one goal is not enough and if that trend continues we are in serious trouble. Do I see one goal efforts from Lowell the rest of the way, nope. However I do not see the offensive attack as last season. While not all the time, the cycling has been poor, sloppy passing and frankly, we don't play cohesively on offense. Have there been some bright spots, sure! There have been two goaltenders that have stood on there heads each of the nights. To me, the loses of Val and Ferreira are greater than most anticipated. If you read a previous post of mine, this was the biggest concern coming in. Last year, We were shut out three times and scored one goal only once...

Overall we don't look like a top team in hockey east, let alone the country. I am not jumping off the ship, as its a long season. I would rather start slow and end on a positive streak. We know the talent is there...it's just a waiting game now. Hopefully Basin can jolt these guys

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread

So catching up ... my thoughts and views from the trip.

*Absolutely great showing by the Lowell fans. Having Holmstrom from the area helped of course, but the travelling group was still very good (at least 92 tickets sold for the Denver game, not sure about CC which appeared larger).
*WCHA refs make Hockey East refs look amazing. Some highly questionable calls, and I'm still not fully sure what happened on the "kneeing" call.
*Just a guess on my part, but Hellebuyck probably got the start with the expectation that he might not be playing anytime soon (specially with BC next weekend). I'm sure, even though he won't admit it, that Bazin wanted the win at CC more. Like I said though, just a guess on my part.
*While the Hawks are putting a ton of shots on net (116 through 3 games, almost 40 a game!), it doesn't appear all that many are challenging the goalies. They're not getting deep enough, at least that's what I think.
*Shayne Thompson (yes, even with the penalty) was a beast this weekend. He was flying absolutely everywhere.
*Doug Carr, if he can keep this up, will run away with the HE Goaltender of the Year, and be very much in the run for the Hobey Baker. After the CC goal, it seemed like every shot that CC took, he was just snaring out of the air ... kinda like a "Yeah, no ... you're just not going to beat me again." He's at a 0.89 GAA.
*The numbers don't show it, but I thought Hellebuyck wasn't too bad. He made most of the saves he should have, and some that were very good. Tough first ever start for him considering it was the home opener for the #7 team in the country.
*Lowell still is drawing too many penalties, while not drawing enough themselves. I was shocked to see a blatant elbow about 2 feet from the ref on Saturday night against CC, and no call. I'm trying to remember the last time Lowell had a game without a power play?
*Lowell was the only team in HE to win a non-conference game this weekend.

Anyway, fun trip. I think this trip does the job, which was to bring the kids together. I overheard a couple of parents talking about how close this group is, which was great to hear. The win, hopefully, gets some confidence going with BC coming up twice this weekend. Should be fun, and I hope that we have a sellout Friday night.

And hey ... at least we're not Maine! ;)

One thing to add: Was great to get a quick picture with Roloson on Saturday, and had a blast talking with Mike Nicholisien for a good hour as well.

Just a curiousity question....With such a large roster does the whole team travel when flights are involved?

No ... usually only a few extras.

Lowell has fallen one spot to #11 in the country, while UNH has jumped from 15 to 12 (and got a first place vote!), BU falls from 11 to 13 and NU from 14 to 15. BC moves back up to #1. 5 HE teams in the Top 15.

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread

Special thanks to UML and Heather from the Office of Alumni Relations for putting together the pre game parties each night in Colorado. It really added to the trip and it was nice getting everyone together before each game. Hopefully there will be more of them this season.

I think its about knowing what we're capable of. DU played very well as we would expect... but I think we should have reason to believe that we can be better than what we did. To be honest, I'm not particular interested in how good our opponent is except as a barometer of where we are.

I actually think the two games are relatively comparable in terms of play. Better defense Saturday, IMO. I think CC was a weaker opponent which yielded better opportunities for us. To me right now its opportunity conversion (scoring goals) which is lacking. Otherwise we'd gloss over the defensive issues between Houk and Synitsyn.

I don't know how much of our offensive troubles is in regards to the teams knowing what to do against us or if we're playing too tight to a script.

An alumni reception before a BU or NU game I think should be reasonable. How many of our grads work in Boston proper and find it harder to get to Lowell? Give them an outlet.

I think UML is fine. They are an experienced team, know what it takes to get to the post season. They struggled in HE Tourney so I think the ultimate goal for the squad is to advance further in tournaments this year. It's not how you start, but how you finish. The one thing to really look at positively is Wilson, Wetmore and Arnold have a combined 1 assist and zero goals. Those three are way too good to be held down for long. Minus the third period at DU, the goaltending and defense have still been solid. For Pairwise implications, they at least went 1-1 against WCHA opponents.
