UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread

Synitsyn hasn't played competitive hockey in a year and a half and it showed last night. I want to say he has at least 5 giveaways, attempted to coast to an icing call and got beat, and seemed out of place.

Wilson hit anything that moved last night, which was nice to see. You generally don't see your top quality goal scorers be that physical.

I'm still wondering why Houk got the 5 minutes. He hit the guy hard, really hard, but there was no contact to the head, he never left his feet, he hit with his shoulder (may have led with his elbow which is why I would have been fine with 2 minutes), but nothing that should have resulted in a 5. It was one of those old Bobby Robins or Ben Holmstrom penalties for hitting too hard.

The reason Lowell tied Vermont was because they couldn't finish. Out of the 39 shots, at least 27 of them came from bad angles or from just over the blue line. They weren't able to get any puck movement around the net to create chances. When they did get their chances, they couldn't put them home. They had 3 or 4 2-on-1s but weren't able to capitalize on any of them.

Overall it was a very frustrating night. On to Colorado next week for hopefully some better results. Wouldn't be surprised to see Eiserman in the line-up to put a little more D1 experience on the blue line.

I only saw it once and I agree....

on the other hand, did you see the "old" muscle bound rowdy in the student section.

I prefer the red bird, so what if blue is our primary color again... it fits in better with the logo and looks sharper.

I would "prefer" my team scores more than 1 goal vs. freaking Vermont! Who gives a crap what color the bird is? W-O-W!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck out west, soon we will know if last year was an aberration or not for the hawks

Disappointing result. Good to see that UVM's boring play really hasn't changed. There was a stretch in the second period where it was just a fully open game, but other than that, it was your typical UVM road game. zzzzz...

There was talk after the exhibition game that penalties are going to be a problem ... and yep, it happened again. While the PK was very good, it was on the ice much more than needed.

The offense looked lost. Out of the 39 shots, did we really see that many that challenged their goalie?

After the second period, I told a couple of people around me that I was nervous. And the response was the normal platitudes "eh, we'll score, we should be up 4-0!" ... the problem of course being... we weren't.

I hate expectations.

Game takeaway fom CHN:

I don't like this comment. I think/hope it had more to do with killing off the major and 5 on 3 in the third period.

That penalty kill was exhausting. The conditioning is fine with this team.

Great crowd, bad result. I feel like we lost last night and that is a good thing as I expect this team to be very good. Get a split out in Colorado next weekend then come home to a full Tsongas to play BC.

I don't know about how others feel but there was a different vibe in the building last night. A good vibe. The students were out in force as were all us old grumpy alumni!

Speaking of the building, I sit in section 119 and the speaker / sound system was terrible last night. It was hard to make out what was being said. Did anyone else notice a problem where they sit? Anyone hear any feedback on the new boxes?

The sound wasn't much better in 124... Also, was it me, or did the PA guy credit every penalty and every goal to Lowell?

I didn't like the PA guy. Someone needs to tell him that he shouldn't be so enthusiastic when the other team scores and things like that.

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread

The sound was OK in 116 but the sound was really loud. Uncomfortably so for regular things. I can get the loud for scores and getting the fans jazzed but it is definitely too loud for the run of the mill stuff.

I forgot to ask, how were the fireworks? I had to leave right after the game.

Fireworks were decent, considering they were launched from the ice. Couple went higher than probably desired and bounced off the roof.

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread

I left the arena as quick as possible. Indoor pyro is one of those things I just don't play with. It can't possible be that good, and there's too much risk of it going really bad.

Game thoughts:

- The offensive play making was there. They got into the zone smoothly most of the night. The finish was missing, and on the bright side I think that will come as they get more time. One shot on three 2v1 chances is horrific though.

- I don't understand why the 29/16/23 line wasn't together until the third period. That has to be front and center for the rest of the season...am I the only one who thinks that's a no-brainer? Second unit 14/12/10 still has plenty of ability and goal scoring potential.

- The penalties have to stop. There's a reason why Vermont had the jump in the third period, a 5 min major and two minutes of 5x3. That's can't happen anymore. Even in the first, Lowell was down a man for six of the first 15 minutes of the game. There's no way to get any flow going when you're short handed that much.

- Carr was great, but he'd love to have that goal back. He made some great saves in the second.

- Lowell was massacred on the dot. Losing Ferreria has really hurt those key draws on special teams.

Agree, two of those 1st period penalties were terrible and were after the whistle. They were real easy calls for the refs.

Ah yes, the obligatory "UVM does not play the right kind of hockey for my taste" post. Also known as the sour grapes post.....

Oh please. UVM's brand of hockey elicits that response even if the person watching has no vested interest in the result. Get over yourself already.

It's the suggestion there's something wrong with it that I have an issue with. Y'all need to get over it.
