UMaine Hockey 23 - 24: The Barr Crawl to Glory!!!

If CC wins I have Maine as the 2 seed in Providence playing Michigan with BC and the #16 autobid in the other game.
If Denver wins I have Maine as the 2 seed in Springfield playing Michigan with Denver and UMass in the other game.

CC won, but the Air Force-AIC game also had an unexpected influence. Quinnipiac beats Maine out for #8 by .0001 RPI.

That means Maine is the 3 seed in Springfield, probably playing #7 Wisconsin with Denver and UMass.

I was checking out Michigan just to learn about potential opponents and stumbled across their coaching staff… noticed they now have Matt Deschamps coaching the defensemen. I thought he was a solid “at home” style, physical, clear the netfront type for Maine. Good to see him having success in the coaching ranks.

John Ronan, former Maine forward, has been an assistant for a long while at Union.

Greg Moore is now the head coach of the USA Hockey UNDPT U17 team after a stint as head coach of AHL Toronto Marlies.

Just finished watching game, espn+ to the rescue. Quality win, made some plays, made some mistakes. I think Boija should have been first star, he was the difference. Think he wishes he had another shot at UMass first goal. Bradly was a much more agressive version then we have seen lately. Before the tieing goal him pulling the puck back into his body before the ringing the post was awesome. Of course the 2 on 1 with Josh to tie it was like Deja Vu all over again. Barr 's lineup changes last week was as good as it gets. Gets everyone involved and makes your stars play the whole ice surface.

I hope Ostman is in net tonight, he deserves it. Been a good teammate. Leave the rest of the lineup alone. Not sure about national implications but just win.

Brings back memories. I was at the Bradley Center in 2006 when Wisconsin defeated Maine 5-2 in semi-final. Wisconsin went on to defeat BC 2-1. The Wisconsin fan base was huge! There was a "sea of red" in the stands. I think that's the last time Maine played Wisconsin.

Wisconsin’s season has been a close mirror to ours. Great start but slowed down the stretch.

I’d welcome that matchup and think this regional would be the best case scenario for Maine.

Saw Dylan Lebret is an ‘07 defensemen added to the list on Heisenberg recruiting site. Maine has five ‘07 birth year recruits now, and the last three are from Minnesota. Looks like Barr’s Minnesotan roots/connections are starting to bring in quality recruits from Minnesota. Nice to see. Lebret was drafted with a high pick in WHL draft and went to Shattuck, so seems like a blue chip defensemen. Malachi McKinnon and Poul Andersen are also ‘07 recruits from Minnesota high school hockey. Would have to think they might be playing USHL hockey soon?

I would have reversed the official stars of the game they chose… #1 Freel, #2 Boija, #3 B. Nadeau

To me B. Nadeau was #1, #2 Boija, #3 Freel

Brad also had a few great back checks where he stole the puck and/or poke checked it away so Maine could break up a UMass rush through center ice. It was one of his more complete games in a while. He’s very impressive given he is on average 3.5 years younger than everyone else on the ice.

USCHO pairwise shows Maine as #8

LOL

Anchorage upsetting Arizona State flipped it back to Maine by .0001

Maine can get as high as 6 overall tonight, can only drop to 10 overall with a loss.

The ticket site is down for me on Chrome, but is still up on Edge. Lower bowl seats are sold out for next weekend.

Post game interview Larry asked Barr who will be in net tonight. Barr just stumbled some and said we are trying to win every game now.

Tough call on his part. Not sure what Id do. Victor should play tonight being Sr night. We shall see.

The game next Saturday will be epic because they have a chance of witnessing Maine get to the hockey east semifinals, a feat that hasn’t been done since 2012 season! I guess 11 seasons ago? Against who? Likely rival UNH! The Alfond roof might come off. There is a lot of pent-up frustration ready to be let out.

No guarantees...as in a Senior playing..and I think with that Ostman is a team first guy...yes it would be nice to see him play..and play well..but if it's the win factor, team plays better with Boija in net...not great but seems somewhat better...go figure on that I guess. Expect a 3-2,2-1 game tonight.

Interesting standings tidbit, if UMA (0 pts vs ME), PC (0 pts vs NU), and UNH (3 pts vs UML) all end up tied for fourth, PC would fall to sixth, and UNH climbs to fifth and gets the last bye spot. This would have to side-effect of changing Maine's most likely quarterfinal opponent to being PC instead of UNH. However, any other result than a three way tie keeps NH in sixth place, as they lose the H2H tiebreaker against both the Friars and Minutemen, but benefit from the skipping of the first tiebreaker in a scenario with more than two teams tied.

I would honestly have no problem with Ostman getting the start tonight.

Last night was the first game I was at in atleast a few weeks where in the second period I felt they finally found that second gear they had a couple of zone possessions which were fantastic

Tough call is right. He mentioned seedings are on the line, meaning ncaa seedings. And then said they aren’t in a position to not take the game serious if you read between the lines of what he implied. That seemed like his mindset was go with Boija. He appears not afraid of making a tough call despite it not being a popular one amongst the fan. I think he wants to avoid getting shipped west and will go with Boija. Hard to fault that decision if it is how he is thinking. It is like saying no one person is before the team. I think if you are only doing what puts your team in best possible position for post season success then logically you start Boija.

USCHO says Alfond renovation will be $320 million (rather than the reported $45 million) Gold plated seats for everyone!.....lol

Pass on the gold plating. That sounds uncomfortable.

Earlier in the thread some folks were discussing the prime rib dinner up in the club seats...just make that available for all fans. :) That would be a preferable alternative.

I like the winning culture but also like the tradition.
Victor is a good goalie, had some good games, been a great team player.
Remember 2019 Rob Mcgovern started senior night and shut out BU.
Swayman sat.

I like the idea of Saturday night hockey tailgating 3 hours before game with food trucks, live entertainment, etc. Could do it inside Alfond Stadium area. UM could make a little extra money with food, beer and merch sales.
