UMaine Hockey 23 - 24: The Barr Crawl to Glory!!!

I wouldn’t mind seeing Poisson and Renwick play with Scholle on the third line. Maine is going to need a lot from them if they are going to get very far.

I think Northeastern winning Tuesday changes tonight significantly. They moved up seven spots in pairwise and are within striking distance of an at large bid even if it’s somewhat of a long shot. If they had lost I think they would be more focused on Monday but after winning they’ll be desperate to follow it up with a win tonight.

My expectation is Northeastern is the better team at the start of the game and Maine gets stronger as the game goes on. Maine has won their other three games coming off a bye week so hopefully that pattern stays true tonight.

My biggest question mark for Maine is how much they have left in the tank. They’ve given it everything they have all year and none of these remaining 12 games will be easy.

Maine has played less games than most other teams, it is why Maine has games in hand on BU and BC, for example. Plus Maine is evidently fully healthy according to reports from people that watched a recent practice. So if anything being fresh should be an advantage for them.

I think you would have a better argument if you said they could be rusty due to the layoff. But that is not the same as being exhausted.

And the fact there are no easy games means the league is good! Luckily, those teams all have to play the same teams that aren’t easy.

I’m excited about the game tonight. They got a great chance to break that streak Northeastern has on us at Matthew’s.

I actually wouldn't mind a fourth line of Poisson/Renwick/Calafiore.

Hanson probably offers a bit more versatility with his ability to take face-offs, but like what I've seen from Calafiore so far through his 5 games.

I’d be ok with it, sure. In fact a few times I thought he was Josh. The numbers on the unis are harder for me to see clearly this year. I’m guessing it is my old age eyesight combined with thinner sew on patches.

In any case, if you are being nifty and confusing me into thinking you are Josh, it must be a good thing. It does seems straight line speed is where Califiori is lacking. Or conditioning… because at time he seems dogged. But would love to see another small, crafty, stop-and-go in the line up.

I don’t think the difference in games played is super meaningful. I’m sure Maine will have plenty in the tank tonight, my worry is more as time goes on.

It’s wonderful everyone is available for selection tonight but doesn’t necessarily mean they’re completely healthy. The combination of how hard Maine has had to work and how physical other teams have been with them makes me concerned. Hopefully there is plenty left in the tank and weariness is a long ways off but time will tell.

You worry more than my grandmothers ever did.

Maine may have some bumps and bruises but no more so than any other team in HE. I haven't seen anything in their skating that makes me think they are wearing down physically.

Regarding health I'd be more worried about Arnott than Renwick.

The practice I went to a couple weeks ago Renwick was still rocking a non-contact jersey, but his skating looked game ready and he didn't look too far off from a return.

Arnott wasn't on the ice at that practice, so can't speak on how he's looked at recent practices. Defense could definitely benefit from his return though.

The difference in this one is goaltending. Seems to be a recurring theme. There's about 4 or 5 teams in HE that have better tenders than Maine.

I'm live at Matthews, maybe I'm just biased because I can't stand NU, but I thought there were three plays in pretty quick succession that could have/should have been penalties on NU, only for what I thought was a pretty weak call to go against Maine (though I was sitting on the other end of the rink). There was one play in particular, I think it wae Scott driving down the middle and he got cleaned out and I don't think he even had the puck, was a little wobbly to the bench after that.

I am watching on NESN and agree on the Harrison Scott non-call.

Probably true but the goal was a cheap turnover by Trudeau in the neutral zone during a line change. He then tapped it in.
