UMaine Hockey 23 - 24: The Barr Crawl to Glory!!!

I'm not worried about Maine being able to find the cash to pay Barr. Just look at the uptick in attendance- that alone is probably going to bring in the revenue necessary. There's no reason Maine can't fund its program in a way that lets them compete for national titles (nb it would be easier if they cut the money pit that is football, but that's not happening). Getting Barr and his staff a pay bump, continuing to improve facilities, I'm pretty confident that Barr wouldn't leave for another college job. Sure, BU/BC/the Big Ten will always be better resourced, but Maine just needs to be in the ballpark.

Now if the pros called, obviously that's different, but no college hockey program is going to be immune to that.

I will also say, if the school can't find the money to keep around its coach in its most successful program, that is supposed to be the bell cow for the athletic department, Maine should immediately drop to Division II because there's no more pretending that this is a serious endeavor.

Well said, I agree completely. If the admin doesn't have a lingering bad taste from the disastrous years of late Timmay and Red, then as you say, they deserve to play D2.

Totally spot on. I still think that the Alfond gift is a game changer in many ways. As I've said....Maine can't afford to not take athletics seriously now. There is too much at stake....they need to up their resources for coaches and operations to match their facility upgrades....and I think that they will. Jude Killy is from a football/hockey school (Miami)....that certainly helps. Hopefully they figure out how to establish a NIL collective....and get some donors to buy in on the premiere programs so that they are funded correctly.

Maine at #7 this week.....it sure has been a long slow journey up the ranks in the USCHO Poll. Computers > humans.

It would be hard to justify Maine moving much further up based on what the schools above us have done. Maine may crack that top level if we take care of business against UMass and Providence.

But why is a team on a 3 game losing skid and hasn't won a game since Dec.1 at #4?

NoDak is a blue blood that's played one of the harder out of conference schedules in the nation. Voters are much more likely to give them a break, even after a sweep against Colorado College. I've got no problem with Maine staying in the 6-8 range as long as they are comfortably in the tournament.

So what you are saying is that who you beat and winning no longer matter in polling? Gotcha. I guess that I will continue to focus on the PWR. F the USCHO Poll!

That’s why the saying is, the only poll that matters is the one you hang the banner on. Just keep winning and all that stuff takes care of itself.

All the Timmay haters in the heyday would argue otherwise, and there were a lot of them.

Lots of internet crazies back in the day. Timmy's tenure looks fine in retrospect, but lots of missed opportunities in those years unfortunately.

Took some time but love where we're at now!

That's not at all what I'm saying. NoDak has beat Minnesota, Wisconsin, BU, and Denver. They are playing and winning against the elites of college hockey.

What I am saying is that we don't need to be upset about some perceived injustice when we are ranked a top 10 team for the first time in decades. The boys are playing well and we will move up if we keep winning.

BC and Quinnipiac are chopped liver? I guess that they need to lose a couple to CC as well and go a month with zero wins to move up?

Maine just needs to win MORE than the "elites" to get the same recognition. Gotcha.

Colgate fan here. Bound for Orono in the morning.
Was there (and Portland) last for Omaha series.
This year, when ‘Gate schedule was announced, I was disappointed at seeing six non-conference opponents… none of whom were in the NCAA tournament last year. Obviously, Maine was one of the disappointments. Now, this coming weekend, Colgate faces the PWR number one team in the land. WTF??!! In 25 words or less, who can tell me what caused the turnaround? If it is so solely the coach, you can tell me in two words. But was it anything else? Thanks!
