UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

I don't think Maine will be playing at SNHU Arena in March. I would not write off UNH. You guys have a goal tender and a very good top line. The limitation may be that there is not enough depth. The way in which UNH peaked late in the season last year I would find encouraging as a fan.

Well thanks for the optimism!! Some of us are dreaming of a "Northeastern Miracle". 😉 Skating at the TD would be most gratifying but well who knows! Good luck the rest of the way...

Appreciate the encouragement ... but that was two years ago now. :(

UNH peaked in December (shocking, eh?) last season, and only the non-skating version of Mother Theresa would have found anything remotely encouraging about how the 'Cats played down the stretch in early 2016.

I agree, there's not enough depth at present. And I like Tirone, but he does seem to save his best for you guys.

Not many folks posting on here any more but long time Maine fan and owner of the listserv Hockey L, Wayne Smith has passed away. Before USCHO and what ever other social media place came into existence a list serv was the way to talk about college hockey thru EMail. When I first discovered Hockey L I was some excited. There is a world of hockey outside of Orono and here was a way to learn about it. Wayne is an Orono boy and I've known him for many years. Wayne loved Maine hockey and Alfond won't be the same without him in the Balcony. RIP Wayne

Nice article about Wayne and Hockey L http://www.collegehockeynews.com/news/2017/01/03_college_hockey_loses_treasured.php

Glad you posted this Walrus. Very sad news indeed. A nice tribute by Adam Wodon as you pointed out and Wayne certainly earned those accolades. As the years pass there will be fewer of us who will even understand what a list serve was, let alone have participated in both the College Hockey and Maine Hockey Discussion Lists, which gave us a voice before the world, wide web and USCHO. Wayne was a dedicated Maine hockey fan and he will be sorely missed by the Maine community and the college hockey community. Best wishes go out to his family at this tough time.

Thanks for the link.

Before USCHO -and I remember those days- we desperately needed some news. Hell, I used to get the BDN delivered to me in New York in week-old bundles, just to keep up. And I subscribed to "The College Hockey Newsletter" out of Troy NY, too. Those guys were dedicated.

BDN article talks about Herner having 3 years after this one or sitting out and having 4 years after this one. Is this season a lost cause in Reds mind?? Article is mostly about Hoglund but the end talks about Herner. Interesting to see what happens

It's a lost cause in my mind. They might get home ice in the first round but how meaningful is that? If Herner is anywhere close to as good as hyped it's hard for me to believe he would be around four more years after this season. I'm maintaining my optimism for next year but it's hard not to be disappointed how this season has played out, especially after winning the first three games.

USA WJC Champs...quite a game versus Canada...sadly not the right way to decide a Winner, but that's the IIHF. ALOT of Hockey East Flavor in scoring and defense and THE SHOOT-OUT kid from Denver and what GOALTENDING should look like: Clutch and steady. Fun to watch.

I wouldn't hold my breath on Home Ice in the 1st Rd. --- Coaches in Hockey East had Maine pegged right and us fans just "HOPED" to prove them wrong. Disappointing to say the least.

Sounds promising on Hoglund, looking forward to seeing how he does. The best part of the articles is .... This is the type of attitude the team needs!!

“This is going to be so much fun. I feel that I’m very ready. I’ve been training for a long time. It’s going to be great to put on a Maine jersey for the first time. I’m excited about the opportunity.”

Haven't heard Herner's name yet. Guess maine got some kid from Slovakia, 21 year old freshman, must be next year.

Herner isn't in the lineup. I think whoever posted he was the second coming got some bad info. A little surprising Maine got another kid for next year given how many kids are already committed. He's fourth in the league in scoring.

Mundinger in net i see. The livestats roster shows herner??

Yeah, if he can't break this lineup he might as well go back home. 3 1 now. Apparently Mundinger isn't the 2nd coming also

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

Ha, I mean the game didn't count. It is pretty embarrassing but nice of Red to let Mundinger play. The one bright spot was Hoglund, I think he is going to be a decent enough player.
You think this game didn't count by Gendron's standards??? Bet again it did, do you think he let Mundinger play because he (RG) was trying to be "NICE"...come on...are you 4-real. Yes it was a Exhibition game...but bet that, that locker room was not a cozy place to be after the final buzzer tonight.
