Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

Inspiring gendron quote relayed by dave starman during world junior telecast.

"You can coach em any way you want, the team that has the best players on the bus generally wins"

;)

Great quote buy Starman, who I happened to like, better find a new Red quote after using the same one during last year's juniors.

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

Here is one I heard earlier that I like. "It's one thing to get the players on the bus but it's another to find the right seats for them." If you want to find out who's quote that is please don't ask me. I have watched so much hockey lately I can't keep track of it all.

Looks like Frank Doyle's days as a Mainer are coming to an end (he lives in Bar Harbor)

Got an email from the local YMCA where his wife works saying they are moving to Canada where Frank has a job offer. I think he has been working for some accounting or finance firm in Bar Harbor.

Aside from Hockey, but Baseballs Yogi Berra and Casey Stengel would be PROUD:)

Wasn't the first line out there for both UNH goals, pathetic

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

I guess we have to say we came away AGAIN with the same old/same old...talk and excuses and things will change in print and sound bites...but back to the norm: quick goal :28 into the game, giving up a short-handed goal, defenseman that get expose over and over again by speed....goaltending change during the game...and CAN'T muster a win on the road to save there lives...disappointing to say the least. From the sounds of it the game versus USA could be when we see Herner and maybe Hoglund, FWTW...who knows...I have a suggestion on the goaltending next weekend which won't happen, play ALL 3...one period for each...McGovern, Morris and Mundinger...get them all some playing time and change up the d-man pairings. 7-10-3 now and after the USA game all Hockey East....and all tough games no matter what place the other Teams are in...not counting the USA game but Maine might be hard press to win 3-4 games the rest of the season. (just imo)

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

If this were the pros Red would be fired tonight!
Think about it, first two season he had 30 wins (16 & 14) and since then he has mustered half that total: 15...with 14 League games remaining...not much to brag about...especially when he has HIS team...he and his staff are not meeting the standards of producing a turn around program...4 years later we very well could say we are going backwards. 11th/12th place and 10-11 win seasons could be the standard from here on in.

Looks like Rob is taking lessons from Matt, playing with his *** under the cross bar he is so far back in the crease. UNH forwards walk in, take a shot from the dots, score. Same ol, same ol. Its frustrating to watch thats for sure. Glad I only bought a few tickets for this season, its really not worth the price of admission

I see Maine winning at best 2 tops 3 more games - from Umass and Merrimack - at best. They could easily get swept at Merrimack (away games).

Its gotten pitiful to say the least. Most days I think the folks on this forum are the only ones with passion for the team to play well. The winning culture there is just gone. Many players don't seem to have the fire nor drive it takes. When I go to games I sit over near the OO section where the Maine players sit who aren't dressed. It baffles me, they sit there and look at their phones all game or just look bored, they don't watch the game and don't seem interested when Maine scores or has moments of brilliance. The only thing I can think of is I'm out of touch with this generation of hockey and have too high of a hope level.

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

Currently, not much of a rivalry between Maine and UNH. UNH now "owns" Maine in two sports. You can now add ice hockey to football. Maine ice hockey is 0 - 6 - 1 in the last 7 games. By the way, what is the origin of the Riverstone Classic? Name of the game last night at SNHU Arena.

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

By the way, what is the origin of the Riverstone Classic? Name of the game last night at SNHU Arena.

When they first opened the arena, there would be an annual UNH v. Dartmouth game hosted there that would normally be dubbed the Battle for the Riverstone Trophy. I think that lasted for a few years, and then the "Riverstone" label simply migrated to whomever UNH would play in their annual Manchester game. I'm guessing that if UNH plays Dartmouth, then it's for the "Riverstone Trophy", while when they play someone else (UMaine) instead, then it becomes the "Riverstone Classic".

As discussed in the thread for this week's lead up to the game, I've always held out hopes this "Riverstone" thing would develop into a NH version of the Beanpot. You old-timers might also recall the short-lived "Governor's Cup" series, which involved UNH, UMaine, UMass-Lowell and (I think?) UVM for a couple of years in the late '90's? I think that was a Thanksgiving weekend tourney, and lasted maybe 2-3 years before interest petered out.

For more info than anyone probably wanted ... "Riverstone" is actually an insurance claims management organization that runs off stranded business lines. It's part of the Fairfax group, and the outfit still operates down the street from the (now) SNHU Arena. Once upon a time, back when I was interviewing for my job with my current company in late '99, I also interviewed with them. I didn't think they had a long term future in the area (which was why I was interviewing in the first place, due to the local departure of my previous employer), but as it turned out, all three of the companies I was looking at are still alive and very active in the area. So I guess I couldn't have messed that one up, no matter how hard I may have tried to. :o

Thanks for the history lesson Chuck. The last paragraph is what I was most interested in. Very informative and just what I was looking for.

You LIKE your hockey and have a passion for Maine Hockey...times have changed I keep getting told...not SOLD ON THAT as the right person/persons behind that bench and this Program can make it back...to the TOP..? Maybe NOT...but the right attitude, due diligence in recruiting and a very/very cocky us against the rest is needed...and then anything can happen....I'm not giving up on that concept, just very frustrated.

Yeah, I figured - just can't help myself. :o Anyway, good luck to you guys the rest of the way. I'm guessing neither of last night's combatants will be back come March when the Regionals roll into town. Sad but true.

Last night was 100% on the goaltending. Timmy didn't leave Red with much in that department and Maine was ever so lucky to get Bub in for free. For whatever reason it seems like he is great the first half dozen games of the season and then fades. Hopefully Swayman and Beck are the answer but time will tell.

Like everyone else I am incredibly frustrated by last night and really the season overall, but when you step back and look at the bigger picture Maine has played some good hockey at times this season. Even with a bunch of guys out last night and no goals from the top two lines Maine still managed to put four on the board. That certainly wouldn't have happened the last few years.

I would like to see Maine get to 15 wins this year but I think at this point its a long shot at best and 12 is more realistic. It's frustrating they threw away five games against Colgate and UNH. No reason not to have three or four wins out of those games. I guess the one thing you could say is that only one was at home but thats not much of an excuse. I am very excited about next year though. Hopefully Swayman is the goalie we have missed for so many years and there are three or four good forwards in that group. This year's freshmen have all been as good if not better than what I expected with the exception of Pappalardo and hopefully next year's group is the same.

I don't think Maine will be playing at SNHU Arena in March. I would not write off UNH. You guys have a goal tender and a very good top line. The limitation may be that there is not enough depth. The way in which UNH peaked late in the season last year I would find encouraging as a fan.
