Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

Ha, I mean the game didn't count. It is pretty embarrassing but nice of Red to let Mundinger play. The one bright spot was Hoglund, I think he is going to be a decent enough player.

I love your positive attitude, I really do, but I can't share it.

We got excited by Maine beating what turned-out to be some awful teams very early in this season... Then, we saw what we really had.

This team under-talented all around, and especially in the most important positions.

For all the sanguine comments on here about this Freshman class, my prediction is that Maine could have another class just like this one next year, and still finish under .500.

Next year is going to depend on Swayman. McGovern has talent but it doesn't seem like he has more than maybe a half dozen decent games in him. If Maine had even average goaltending this year they would be over .500.

I agree, possibly, and that goes to my point: Red has had plenty of time to find a goalie, and Maine has had pretty-much nothing in net via Gendron.

Stick a fork in the team, they are done. Hockey East can welcome the new umass to the fold. Might be 7 people who actually care what maine does now, just like umass. Unreal.

To be fair to Red Tyler Johnson has had a good season in the OHL. He is teammates with the goalie who was on the US WJ team and their numbers aren't that far apart. He got McGovern for free and he is clearly better than Morris or Romeo and they were full ride guys. I think its easier said than done to say he should have gone out and gotten a better goalie. You can't just kick guys who are already on the team to the curb either. In happier news, it looks like Swayman is really starting to come on in the USHL: http://www.ushl.com/view/#/player?playerId=7143&season=58 It's remarkable he is playing that well when you consider he was playing hs hockey in Alaska just a few years ago. Hopefully he likes pressure.

He kicked romeo to the curb. Not sure he was a full ride guy.

YES indeed he did and Romeo handled it well and with Class, saying he went with what RG wanted but could not find out or figure WHY he was not afforded a chance last season. Myself I hope he does well @ Ohio State next season. He Thanked Maine and RG before transferring to Ohio State.

S#iT, Timmy purged the lineup in maybe 2007 (?), to get rid of that disastrous dead wood, and it almost worked... (Too bad Darling preferred the booze and snapper to hockey, but maybe he was onto something!)

Remember Sill, Czuba, Marrone, De Kastrozza, guys..? That class was shockingly average, when we were still expecting blue-chippas. Red's guys are cut from the same cloth. He just can't put an above-average team together, clearly, and nevermind a really good one. The longer he is kept on, the deeper Maine sinks into Hockey Oblivion.

I will admit it when I know that I'm wrong: I wanted Timmy's head, but it turns out that Timmy recruited circles and circles around Red. (And especially from the goal-out, from whence a team should be built.)

Red's gotta go. If he had a plan, or any ability to turn Maine around, we all would have seen some hint of it by now. He's obviously in over his head. If anyone knows Corkum's cell number, I'll make that call myself. :p

Thought I saw that the under 18 team beat Duluth, the only other D1 win. Not that that should be consoling.

They did beat duluth.
At this point I'm not surprised they lost to the national team. I dont expect them to beat anyone anymore. I'd say if they finish 11th in HE it will be a good year.

Herner isn't in the lineup. I think whoever posted he was the second coming got some bad info.

Does anyone have any info on why Herner didn't play Friday night vs US-18? By all accounts, he was scheduled to. Not that it matters much for this season. Even if he were Larry Robinson, I don't see it making a material difference to this 2016-17 season.

The BDN article said if he doesn't play this year he has 4 full years, maybe thats why, the season is done why waste a year? Maybe he is hurt? Maybe he isn't good enough to break the lineup? Who knows at this point. I have 2 more games to go to, BU because I wanted to see their Freshman, even more so now that they won World Jrs. Northeastern as I thought they would be good also. Might skip NU :D

I don't think playing Friday would have effected his eligibility, but you obviously never know with the NCAA. If he is good enough to get in the top six there is no reason to keep him out this year. I obviously hope I'm proven wrong but I don't think he is very good if they're not going to play him. We heard the same things about how good Hayes was going to be and he obviously is very athletic but hasn't done much on the ice.

I think it would have. You used to be able to play in exhibitions if you were redshirting but the NCAA site now says:

Redshirt: In Divisions I or II, redshirting refers to someone who is enrolled full-time at a school, but does not play for an entire academic year for the sole purpose of saving a season of competition. A redshirt does not play in any college games or scrimmage in a given sport for an entire academic year, even though that student is otherwise eligible. If you do not play in a sport the entire academic year, you have not used a season of competition. However, if you play in even one second of a game as a college student-athlete, you are not a redshirt. Redshirting does not exist in Division III because if you play or practice after your first opportunity to compete, you are charged with a season of participation.

That's very interesting. I'm certain Cochrane played last year and he was able to redshirt. They must have just changed it. I still think red shirting Herner is pointless.

I dunno, this season is buried under the toilet already. What's the point of him playing?

Maybe he helps? 20-21 is so far down the road that I don't think there is any point in trying to preserve someone for that season. I think sitting out a whole year could hurt his game too.

I guess. I dunno. 2020-21 is probably buried under the toilet, too, so maybe you have a point.
