Re: UMaine '18-'19: Back to the Nationals!

UMass #1 in this weeks rankings. Polls are Polls but they are a team to reckon with @ 12-1-0.

Re: UMaine '18-'19: Back to the Nationals!

UMass football hired and OC from Florida or Florida State, so bullett dodged on coach H

#1 in the PWR, the RPI, and the KRACH too. A clean sweep.

Funny how Carvel -in two seasons- has turned around a never-was program into a top team, while Red has spun his wheels for 5 years and completely squandered the collateral he inherited.

Just in case you didnt know, Maine vs Weber, 8pm Friday night ESPN2.

Another D man sounds good but we will see if he can play or just red shirts like a lot of guys Red brings in that folks thought were good

Whether its UMAss or somewhere else, this off season or next, he is gone to greener pastures. Well deserved on his part. Imagine this team with Cozzy as coach :);) Enjoy it while we can, Friday is going to be great

It can be done. It goes to show what can happen when the AD is committed. Not that its easy to do or a sure thing but that was a brilliant hire for umass, the AD must get credit for.

Exactly. UMass has a wonderful facility in the Mullins Center for attracting players. I suspect Carvel received a commitment of resources before he took the job. I watched the introduction of Carvel by the AD and I had a sense that this program was finally destined to be a top program.

When everyone works together good things happen.....years past the Program was organized and had goals and had a Leader to make it happen...no more. But that's old news and not much fun to re-hash over and over.

Somehow I think hockey is in a good place for the future, because IMO:
- We can argue around in circles but recruiting has improved since the past 7 or 8 years.
- Red will be moved out after next season and save face by given credit for improving the program.
- This AD is the key for placing the next coaching group, which is critical for the program. Living off the glory years is at its end.

Or maybe not and we get Red till he is tired of coaching. 😣

Cosgrove actually resurrected a truly awful program, made some noise in the PS, and sent players to The Show. IMO, he laid the groundwork for Harasymiak, and, by extension, Harasymiak's successor.

In any case, GO BLUE on Friday. I don't see Maine winning a shootout, but if Coach H releases the hounds on D with stunts and blitzes to allow them to wreak havoc, the Bears have a shot at this one.

This is the type of coach UMaine should be hiring in all sports. Young guys/gals who want to have success and move up in 3-4 years. Sometimes it won't work out, but just try again. Harasymiak may need to move somewhere else in the FCS before getting an FBS job (if only for geography- not many opportunities in New England, so he may need to prove himself in the Mid Atlantic first).

Either way, Maine doesn't pay enough or have a high enough ceiling to draw top flight coaches who will stay forever. Anyone who says "Maine is where I want to spend 10-15 years" doesn't have the ambition needed to drive success.

Shawn Walsh.

Someone mentioned Walsh, but I would say he's most likely an outlier in every way possible. The only exception I would say is an alumni of this school might want to permanently coach here, but that carries its own set of risks to worry about.

Re: UMaine '18-'19: Back to the Nationals!

Shawn Walsh.

The 2018 Shawn Walsh wouldn't stay at Maine for a decade and a half. In the 1980's through 1990's the salary structure at Maine was comparable to every other college hockey job. In the 1980's through the 1990's Maine was spending a commensurate amount on hockey as the other big powers.

Now, Maine is paying Red about $200k. Cavanaugh, Souza and Carvel are above $300k. Bazin is $500k. Even Sneddon is closer to $250k. The private school coaches all likely make a lot more.

Yes, yes, cost of living, money isn't everything, etc. But the fact is it isn't 1988 anymore, or 1993 anymore, or 1999 anymore. The financial gap between UMaine athletics and all of its competitors has only widened.

Point taken.

Yet, I turned down full rides at Long Beach State and Arizona State to pay much of my way at UMO. Perhaps that was foolish, but I've never regretted it; I love the State of Maine and wanted to live there again. I'm hopeful that Coach H is similarly sentimental. (Not holding my breath on that one, but maybe the U will sweeten the pot a bit...)
