UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

The only reason the MacNaughton isn't important is because we have shot of winning it and the Gophers are slipping. If they were in first right now I'm sure they'd be singing a different time.

Obviously that's not the big prize. But it's a step on the way to the big prize.

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

Not. At. All.

I'm completely indifferent to it. And I'll bet a lot of Gopher fans are.

The ones I know are.

Would it be nice?

Sure.

Should there be any disappointment in not getting it?

None.

I disagree. I want the cup. I think it's, historically, the most challenging goal in college hockey. It might not be this year because the WCHA isn't as strong as it often is, but it's still a very big deal. I for one am jealous of SCSU's lead. It sucks that the Gophs have had too many clinker games in league play and have to depend on others to help them have a shot at it. SCSU is clearly in the driver's seat and should win it.

The crazy thing is neither team has lost a WCHA series yet. Pretty. ****. Impressive

Maybe it's just me, but, show of hands:

How many Gopher fans really care about winning the MacNaughton Cup?

I can understand SCSU's desire for it given their lame D1 existence.

But I'd like to think that, given this years team and last years post season run the only trophy that should concern the Gophers and their fans is the national championship one.

The other two are merely window dressing.

Am I wrong?

I want to win the cup, and it would be great if we do, but I will be disappointed with anything less than a national championship. Not that the season will be a complete failure if they don't win it all, but with what we had coming back, and what we did last season, my expectations were high coming in.

It's a big accomplishment to win the Cup for sure. But considering no team has ever won the Cup and a national championship, it just shows how hard it is to win both, and how anything can happen come tourney time. If one of these teams does win both, that would be quite the accomplishment.

Nobody has won anything yet until they do only then will I feel good
Or bad. ;)

No Minnesota team has, but it has been done, although it is rare.
DU tied for it, won the Broadmoor and the NCAA's in '05
UND tied for it, won the Broadmoor and the NCAA's in '97
NMU won all 3 in '91
Wisconsin won all 3 in '90

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

So Twitter replies are human beings but USCHO replies are Internet tough guys? How does that work? Both are anonymous people making comments on the Internet. I don't think you know what you're talking about.
This really is ironic.

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

I want MN to win the MacNaughton, and I'll be disappointed when/if they don't.
Ultimately I'd rather have a national championship (of course), and having the Gophers win the MacNaughton last year eases the disappointment should they fail to win it this year, but let's be honest...every fan whose team has a shot at the cup wants them to win it and is disappointed if they come close but fall short. Especially the last year before the conference undergoes a major facelift.

Regardless of how the rest of the regular season shakes out and where these 2 teams finish, I'll be rooting for an SCSU - MN championship game in St. Paul. And it would be even better to see one in Pittsburgh.

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

I'll be rooting for a UND-MN F5 title game. Honestly, that game would be so intense.

And yes, potentially profitable if I should find some schlub to pay me some beyond outrageous price for tickets. F the market, my price would be sky high. ;)

I'd much rather it be MN - St. Cloud. I like the style Motzko has his teams play far more than the one Hakstol employs.
As it stands, a MN - UND final seems pretty unlikely at the moment. They will probably end up playing Friday night.

If you were at the 2007 F5 Championship......I think you'd be singing a different tune. Even if MN had lost that game......man, that game took a lot out of you as a fan.

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

Meh...we've won the Mac 12 times anyway...give someone else a shot at it.;)

That was, unfortunately, the only Final 5 I haven't attended in the past decade as I moved to Seattle for a year. I watched it at a sports bar, and received uncountable strange looks for how visibly wrapped up in it I was.
I actually attribute that game (and my absence from it) as the biggest factor in my decision to move back to Minneapolis :p
(lord knows it wasn't for the lovely February weather).

So I know what you're saying. But it doesn't change my opinion ;)

I actually had to sit down for about 15-20 minutes after the final goal, just to collect myself before leaving. I was exhausted mentally.

You've won the NC 5 times, let someone else have a shot at it. :)

Hey...hey, that's another category all together baby.;) You're talkin' about the alchemical magick of Holy Grail... That's rare air.

EDIT:

But I would add the Mac is also one of the hardest trophies to win in NCAA D1 college hockey. Good luck to SCSU...you've got a great team this year. I'm extremely impressed by Drew LeBlanc. He's not only an incredibly talented hockey player, he's an academic math scholar as well. A great role model.
