UCONN 2015-2016: The Hockey East Journey Continues..the Future Looks Bright

Re: UCONN 2015-2016: The Hockey East Journey Continues..the Future Looks Bright

If you think XL is in fine shape, I don't know what to tell you. The place is a dump and its concessions only surpass that of Merrimack and UVM.
Interesting. You are saying that every venue in HE has craft beers, wine, mixed drinks, carver stations, traditional stadium fare, and club seating ... all on campus? Guess I need to get out more. Btw, build a campus venue and most of that goes away, certainly anything with alcohol.

Hey, the Guv is a hockey guy. You say it is silly but I will bet he is gonna try. Why else would the state consider $250MM?

lol, the state doesn't have $250 M. And while some HE arenas have the alcohol (BU/Lowell), you just noted carving stations and club seating as the non-alcoholic amenities. Nearly all HE arenas have this, or some form of specialty food in place of a "carving station." There are so many things wrong with the XL Center, it's not funny.

Lowell and BU (not sure about wine for BU but i don't go to college hockey games to drink) have everything mentioned above. Question who pockets the concessions money? Parking? Is your program currently breaking even, or relying on the state and athletic department (WBB and MBB I suspect). A lot of the reasons why college hockey is one of three NCAA sports that can at least sustain itself is because of that kind of revenue.

I don't know the answer to that question, maybe you guys can help?

Re: UCONN 2015-2016: The Hockey East Journey Continues..the Future Looks Bright

If last night's crowd was typical of a UConn hockey game at the XL, you can have it. There was zero college hockey feel for the home team. And the Wolfpack logo at center ice did nothing to help. I think it's important for a D-I team to have an identity. Fervent student support goes a long way as well.

It was typical ... for any team that had lost eight in a row. Let them get hot and it will be different. There were plenty of Huskies logos on the ice. Did not realize that the placement of logos had such a powerful effect on some people.

Yeah, I am hearing the same sorts of things. Also the state is talking about spending $250MM on the XL to modernize it (mid level luxury, much wider concourses, increase in seating) which smacks of luring the NHL back. At this point it is all speculation and probably not worth even discussing. But something is definitely up in the long range vision department.

But when the games remain on Tuesdays  :(

It makes the program look minor league, to an actual minor league team no less. Show me another Hockey East team with an AHL logo at center ice. There's a reason for that. Even when the Lowell Devils played at Tsongas they shared the logos at center ice. If UConn is going to be playing their games primarily at XL, at the very least they have to put the logo at center ice.

Thanks for your input. I am sure that UConn Athletics will read this board and be in touch.

If I could change the topic for a moment, however briefly, perhaps it would be good to discuss the current UConn slump.

To me, this team looks far more talented than last year. I still feel that way even after all these losses. Where I think they are coming up short (other than the obvious discipline issues) is in the judgement department and failure to play physically. Far too many odd man situations are being coughed up, and when the banging starts they don't seem to know how to respond. Checking cleanly is an art that they do not seem to have. QU beat them up and the response was penalty after penalty after penalty. Oh, for a few more skilled grinders or some players who could at least learn that skill.

I understand that the D and third man high want to help when there are obvious problems with the scoring, but at this level giving up odd man situations is a recipe for disaster. The QU fans thought their team was far too fast for the Huskies. They weren't. UConn simply was slow to recognize dangerous situations and took too many risks with a superior team.

The other issue is that it looks like the balance of leadership power has shifted to the more heralded underclassmen and away from the upperclassmen. That is never a good thing. I do not have any data for this conclusion other than some obvious problems are not getting fixed and upperclass leadership should have been able to fix them.

The Huskies this year are having the year that everyone thought they would have last year. We are all hoping that this gets turned around. They certainly have the potential to do so.

Not sure what game you were watching but the Bobcats were skating circles around the Huskies all night. What do you think caused all those holding calls? Poor decision making was also a large factor.

Actually, I thought UConn completely outskated QU in the first ten minutes and somehow got the idea they did not need to respect them. That is when the wheels started to come off. Shot totals in the first reflected the penalties caused by risk taking.

I'll give you that; we were flat to start and put ourselves in a hole.

Once we found our legs and realized we were there to play hockey it was like someone threw a switch and we went into high gear. I don't think the Huskies didn't respect us, they simply couldn't keep up.

4-0 halfway through the first. A bit different from last year.

Re: UCONN 2015-2016: The Hockey East Journey Continues..the Future Looks Bright

I was not kidding about going shopping for Thanksgiving. We signed up to bring certain things to dinner tomorrow and we had to go get those. Thanks to the Huskies for stinking up the joint in the first period so badly that we had no regrets about leaving so early. I have never seen UConn play with less energy or jump than that first period. And that goes back to the D-3 days under the Eero Saarinen designed roof.

Thank goodness the ski season is getting under way. Industrial league racing on Tuesday nights will be the perfect way to forget this season.

Re: UCONN 2015-2016: The Hockey East Journey Continues..the Future Looks Bright

BC fan and Boston native, drove up from NY City for the game. Lived in Hartford for 11 years and fondly remember covering the late, great Whalers in that building for some smaller Connecticut media outlets. Enjoyed last year's game even though UConn beat us.

At entry on Tuesday they told us that per UConn policy, they couldn't let my girlfriend her take her camera into the arena. So be it. I brought her camera back to my car and put it in the trunk.

But when we tried to enter again, some thuggish overweight female security guard who probably couldn't spell Connecticut got out a tape measure and told her that her purse was too big. We made a stink and they let us through, but put a silly green wristband on the purse. I understand the recent heightened security concerns up to a point, but this was way over the top.

By the way, if they announced a crowd of 7,200, they were lying.

Re: UCONN 2015-2016: The Hockey East Journey Continues..the Future Looks Bright

there was more scrutiny getting into that place last night than your average trip to laguardia

i mean what are people smuggling into a college hockey game? a couple of nips? the horror!

I agree... I don't get that level of screening for a Caps game.
