UAH Hockey 2013-14: Feeling like a real D-I program again

Re: UAH Hockey 2013-14: Feeling like a real D-I program again

It's clear that some of the current guys will be going, whether by choice or not. Parker and Burl committing brings us to nine for 2014-15, and that's without picking up a third goalie to replace Groh (hopefully a kid willing to redshirt unless ML30 or CG35 get hurt). This doesn't even count Alex Carpenter (who has now sat out the transfer year after leaving Western Michigan) and Christian Costello (who was not on the roster this year after being committed, but is still in school per Facebook/Twitter, so I think that it's reasonable to assume that he would be eligible to try again for 14-15). That's a logjam. You're not going to cut any of your rising seniors, as they're the best non-freshmen. (Also, that would be pretty cold.) But these freshmen and sophomores are smart enough to see that there's a numbers game afoot, and they best be hoping that they're not played.

Re: UAH Hockey 2013-14: Feeling like a real D-I program again

Brears has a 4.0 in ME. I finished with a 2.931 in AE, and my GPA took a hit when 1) I got busy with Student Government and 2) I got the co-op job. The latter was a great thing (I wouldn't have had the career I had without it), but man, my GPA took a hit. I was at a 3.4 before all of that happened. Ah well.

Respect to Chad. Pulling a 4.0 in anything at UAH is no small feat, and doing it while playing hockey is even tougher of a feat, but to do it in ME while playing a 38-game schedule and with Don Wallace breathing down your neck telling you, "I don't care what you do outside of class, your *** is mine in MAE 371," well ... dang, son.

Another one of Gavin's "we just want guys that play hockey, not big guys". We're at 10 and waiting on a goalie. I know that they re-did the locker room, but there's only so much room back there. [I hate the VBC.]

It's too bad I've essentially quit broadcasting. That would be a fun name to use.

For any who remember when Brock Higgs (RPI) had his throat cut in a game there 4 years ago. Brock signed an AHL ATO with Worcester at the end of RPI's season. He scored his 1st pro goal tonight in his second game. I know he and his family are forever grateful to those who may have saved his life that night. Just felt like passing it on to you..... http://theahl.com/stats/game-summary.php?game_id=1012013

Thanks for letting us know. That's the scariest thing that I've ever seen at a hockey game. I'm glad that he lived through it, much less did anything else at that point. Here's to his success!

Re: UAH Hockey 2013-14: Feeling like a real D-I program again

I've got to ask. What's the rationale for calling the WCHA championship tournament the "Final Five" this year? It was confusing enough when they called the "final six" teams playing for the championship the "final five", I assume because there were five games. Using the same logic, the "final four" teams playing for the championship this year would be the "final three". Maybe they need Brears' help on this subject. ;-)

What I have heard is that the WCHA got their playoff structure put together a little late in the musical chair shuffle, so they didn't have time to rebrand the Championship with a new name. You can't call it the "Final Four" or "Frozen Four" as the NCAA has those trademarked for basketball and hockey. The NCHC branded and trademarked their tournament the "Frozen Faceoff" before the WCHA got to it, so the WCHA decided to stay with what WCHA fans know as the tournament branding, the "Final Five". Yes, it doesn't make sense this year as there is no way you can spin the "Five", but it is what it is.

It will be interesting to see next year if the league goes to all ten teams making the playoffs or not. I think most fans enjoyed the suspense of the last two-three weeks of the conference schedule, trying to see who would be in and who would be out along with who would be going where. It does suck for two teams, but it also means the regular season means a more.

Re: UAH Hockey 2013-14: Feeling like a real D-I program again

And the number of existing players to be displaced continues to grow.

Or some of the younger kids get pushed back by a year. I haven't looked at ages yet to see who could do that. What a position to be in on that score in March. We're usually filling out the roster in July.

If he could recruit to an academy I knew he could recruit to any school.
Not to dis the academy however their standards are fairly high.
And I'm not dissing UAH standards.......just sayin

That's OK. Both have high standards, just significantly different.

I wasn't sure that we'd get any sniffs this year. Either we are or we're settling. I'm hoping for the former.

Re: UAH Hockey 2013-14: Feeling like a real D-I program again

With this league as tight as it is I don't know why I'd want you guys to get stronger.
But somehow I do.

Well, I think that this part of the college hockey pool has to respect a school that just wouldn't quit playing. Also, unlike Atlantic Hockey, we seem to care up and down the conference about being competitive.
