Where are you staying? Do you like craft beer? What sort of food interests you?
GFM <— with the questions.
I'm staying at the Marriott right next to the Rocket center. I love craft beer, and will eat pretty much anything except seafood. I'm typically anti-chain, and like to check out popular local places. (brew pubs, bbq joints, sports bars, etc...) Thanks.
I'll be at Embassy Suites. What's good within walking distance? Wednesday dinner at Dreamland is already scheduled!Ah, you're a bit away from the rink, then. USSRC is definitely a winner. I'd urge you to check out one or both of The Nook (3305 Bob Wallace) and Huntsville Brewery (801 Franklin). The former has a wider beer supply, and the latter has better food. The owner of the latter used to be a bartender at the former, and his move is why I moved. (Also, it's nice to have food from a real kitchen.) I'll let other people speak to downtown, because I live out in Madison (west of where you'll be staying) and am downtown only for games (though Huntsville Brewery isn't far away).
Douglas? tnlong?

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll check them out!

There have been changes, so I've tried to update my Oct. post regarding downtown nightlife:
Downtown Huntsville is becoming a "happening" place, especially on weekends; plus, Thursday is the new Friday. There are actually lines to get into some of the clubs.

I'm a Roll Tide guy all day long. But I agree that the shaft Porters gave UAH Hockey was a big steaming pile if elephant dung. It's also ridiculous that Bama doesn't play UAB, Troy, USA or Jax St in football. LSU does it w Monroe, Lafayette, Tulane & LaTech. And shooting down a new football venue was ridiculous. If Legion Field is so great, why doesn't Bama still play there? And don't forget the Bear cost Birmingham a shot at the NFL back when BHam & Atlanta were neck & neck. And don't think the boys in TTown exercised some influence in the failure of the MAPS Stadium proposal in the mid-late 90s in BHam.So, people have asked about the "Alabama" or "Huntsville" thing. It surprises no one around here, but I HATE being called "Alabama". No one calls Nebraska-Omaha "Nebraska". No one calls UMass-Lowell "UMass" — and not the least because both schools play D-I varsity hockey. This is on par with calling Northern or Tech "Michigan" in a sport where the Wolverines don't play but the Wildcats and/or Huskies do.
But the big thing for me is that "Alabama" is Nick Saban. "Alabama" is Bear Bryant. "Alabama" is Denny Chimes and the Frozen Tide and all that mess.
"Alabama" is also the group of *******s that opened a research office in Huntsville as if we don't have the state's finest non-medical research institution here. I mean, we're in the same ****ing system. *******s. [And yes, I know that a lot of this is getting ****ed out. I don't care.] They have that smug sense of self-superiority that comes with being an educational institution that was around before the Civil War. They're entrenched in state politics — Don Siegelman was a UA SGA president.
The University of Alabama would be very happy if The University of Alabama in Huntsville did not exist. Despite our excellence in a number of things, we are the red-headed stepchildren of the system, and UA is very, very, very, very, very aware of the fact that UAB dominates the UASystem in all sorts of dollar amounts. UA takes that out in all sorts of ways. Bear Bryant Jr.'s son, who is on the Board of Trustees, single-handedly kept the UAB football team from getting a new stadium. They never wanted UAB to go D-I in athletics, and they'd probably fight anything of the sort here.
Hell, you can easily argue that some on the board pushed Portera to go, "What's the point?" on our beloved hockey team, resulting in the crippling blow that just about ended this program without any outside influence. They wanted to bring us back down to their level, and if they spent more than 10 seconds thinking about it, they'd know that the ruse of bringing us into D-3 and playing with/in the SECHC wasn't going to happen — just like we'd never have been accepted into B1G.
UA are *******s, and I don't want jack-**** to do with them. I know that some of our people here are UA alumni, and I'm sorry, that doesn't change my opinion. I'm not a huge fan of Auburn, but I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE UAT. HATE.
For the record, I go shopping during the Iron Bowl and then go home and watch some NHL game.

Are you aware that both the Kaffeeklatsch Bar and Voodoo Lounge are now smoke free? It's proof that Hell did freeze over (twice) this year. I'm a non-smoker; but ever since the earliest days of UAH hockey, I could depend on having a smoke without lighting-up (second hand) by just going to the Kaffeeklatsch on one of their busy nights. Are we (as UAH fans) willing to flesh this out? We could put something on UAHHockey.com with these things and hotels. I'm willing to pull it together, but I want some input for it, mainly because I'm very rarely downtown anymore. (Hell, my place to go drink is Voodoo Lounge, but only because I like dives.)
