UAA vs Denver Goin on a road trip

Re: UAA vs Denver Goin on a road trip

These penalties were well thought out ...

Also: We came close to having 2 additional DQ's -- Lee and Colborne. Let's just take our losses and be happy it wasn't worse.

What exactly does "well thought out" mean? That reeks of politics. As does that closing statement.

Again, when I'm Commissioner of the WCHA I'll be reviewing every tape of every game and handing out supplemental discipline (along with the video evidence) at my weekly noon Monday press conference.

Looking forward to your reign as Commissioner.

They couldn't really give additional penalties to Denver, since two Denver players were getting punched in face (Colborne & Wrenn) and weren't retaliating. It was all pretty minor stuff, players clutching and grabbing.

You'd think with all the practice that UAA gets at losing, they'd know how to handle it better,

Re: UAA vs Denver Goin on a road trip

I thought politics may have been involved when the penalty distribution seemed so even after the game.

Further information posted by Chris has convinced me that due dillegence was applied by the officials and that the penalties handed out were done so with the assistance of video review.

Re: UAA vs Denver Goin on a road trip

If you'd have asked me on Friday morning I'd have expected the melee to happen between MSU-M and UND in Grand Forks. (See slew-foot by Trevor Bruess to end Derrick LaPoint's season a year ago.)

Instead, the DU "halos" are out in force (and UAA is a bunch of big goons).

And I'm left pondering what may have been the cleanest, and best officiated, WCHA series I've witnessed in at least a season: MSU-M at UND; and even more strange, Puck Swami is admitting that "politics" may have been involved with the final box score for UAA @ DU.

It seems that only Wrenn and Ryder threw punches for DU as they're the only two with DQs.

Maybe Suze can clarify that from a UAA perspective.

Fighting or Punching
SECTION 17. a. A player shall not fight an opponent or participate in a fight, on or off the playing surface. A punch thrown may be considered fighting.
PENALTY—Disqualification.
b. A player who does not retaliate after being struck shall not be assessed a penalty.
c. When a fight occurs on the ice, all non-participating players, excluding goalkeepers, must proceed immediately and directly to their respective players’ bench at the signal of the referee. Goalkeepers must remain in the immediate vicinity of their goal crease.
PENALTY—Minor to offending player(s) or goalkeeper.

Not much to clarify. In watching the replay, it initially started with Patrick W and Gorham, but honestly it was at the other end of the ice and it was hard to see what happened. The other fights didn't amount to a whole lot. One Pioneer was obviously so scared of little Kevin Clark that he pulled his jersey over his head. Pretty cheesy. I think they all got what they deserved. Two UAA players left their benches, and two DU players did as well, and they are the ones who got the DQ's.

Re: UAA vs Denver Goin on a road trip

The real question with that is why didn't Clark have his fight strap on his jersey buckled prior to the game?

Is there even a rule for that in the NCAA? Are you suggesting it was pre-meditated ;-) ?

For cowards. :D

Not exactly. "Turning the lights out" (Pulling a combatants jersey over his head) is a time-honored part of many hockey fighter's intentions in winning a fight, and is pretty well defined in hockey circles as NOT the tactic of a coward.

If you want to see what I mean, rent the bad 1986 movie "Youngblood" and watch the scene where Rob Lowe (I know, he can't skate, but follow me) learns to fight in the barn with his father (his dad, played by ex-NHL tough guy Eric Nesterenko).

Or, just click and see these explanations:

Do college hockey jersey's have fight straps? I think that is the bigger question.

Does anyone have the video? It would be interesting to watch it again.

I bought that DVD on ebay a month ago for $4. What a steal!
Lowe, Swayze, Reeves, topless Cynthia Gibb. It doesn't get much better than that! :)

Yes, for big schools at least.
Oops, Dirty beat me to it.

Ah, yes. Back in the stone age, before DVDs, we had this thing called VHS video tape, and properly freezing frames during the 'Cynthia Gibb water bottle scene' took some timing and dexterity.... ;)
