Diamond really just doesn't get it most of the time. So frustrating...

Re: U Maine 2011-2012 Season (thread created when Maine was at .500) Thread

They come out and play a good first period, with the exception of the defense continually turning the puck over at the blue line, but then TIMMAY gets his hands on them in the locker room, with his "play not to lose" overcautious philosophy, and they stop doing everything they were doing in that first period to build the lead, and they give up two goals, tie game.

Re: U Maine 2011-2012 Season (thread created when Maine was at .500) Thread

I remember early last decade going to games...and "5,641" was the easiest number in the world to remember because the price of a potato seemed to have a better chance of changing than the attendance due to yet another remarkable sellout streak. In 1994, it took a terrible storm to disrupt a similar 120+ game sellout streak dating back to the late 80s. With a couple bumps here or there, this program was a near guarranteed sellout for 20 years.

Mind you this is PAID attendance....number of people actually walking through the door would be an even more interesting number:

2007....hangover from last years frozen four team, no shortage of season ticket holders yet....Avg of 5,231
2008....Around 4,700 ( 10% hit in 1 year, ouch)
2009....Around 4,300 (another 8.5% hit from previous year. 23%+ from just a few years ago when sellouts were the norm. AND THAT TEAM HAD A LATE SEASON SURGE!)
2010....Interest has skeptically returned with high expectations....Around 4,900!

This year, after 6 games.... We're already showing figures back around 4,300. And guess what? No one is going to buy up tickets to watch us lose to Boston, Boston or UNH this year. That number is going to get worse.

This year, I too dropped my tickets and will not renew until Tim is gone.

200,000/per over 2+ years now is a lot to buyout, but not only does Steve have connections to get it done, but..

At 18 homegames per year, and if the average goer spends $25 each on ticket/concession/50-50/whathaveyou.... If 440 more seats are sold per game than would otherwise be sold to watch a Tim-led team, you've recouped your losses. At 4,300 tickets per game, that means if you put someone in there that can attract that number back into the 4,700s....you're not taking any more of a hit than if you keep Tim around...

Act quickly, before that number enters the 3,000s!

I think Diamond needs to take a seat for a game, or move him off the first line, he keeps taking penalties and they get pulled off the ice. They need some1 who sees the ice much better, I think they should move Beattie back up. Rutt few more penalties tn, but looked fairly good!

Interesting post; thanks for digging up the numbers.

Your math might well add up, but I can't see it taking with the taxpayers, if only because taxes are all about the money, and college sports are supposed to have nothing to do with that... Any change at the top will have to be couched in different terms, if the working people are going to be expected to swallow it, and I don't see that happening.

Gotta say that I'm very happy that I didn't make the trip to UMass tonight. We stayed home and ate a bunch of Maine scallops, which no doubt went down much more smoothly than did the Maine hockey in Amherst. (And I hate how PC that crappy little town pretends to be, anyway. ;))

I feel bad for the Maine faithful who drove for hours to get there, but, remember, 2013-2014 is just around the corner!

Tieing UMass is like kissing your sister. The one with the mustache.

"HOPEFULLY" there's CHANGE for the 2012-13 season and the Rebuilding in both the TEAM/Recruiting/Season Ticket Holders Renewal/and the big one for most Programs...the Deep Pocket Donor steps back in.

This belongs in a letter to Steve Abbott and President Ferguson. This is the best case for buying out Whitehead I've seen...by the end of December! They are paid to run the university like a business and every dime Tim loses for this program is another dime the taxpayer has to pay toward it. This math is easy to understand. If Abbott and Ferguson go to the taxpayers with this argument, they'll have no argument from the taxpayers for turning this program around. They will be saving the state money. What could be better than that in this economic environment

Re: U Maine 2011-2012 Season (thread created when Maine was at .500) Thread

I'm new to this forum and have been a fan of the team since the late '80s. Frankly, it would be easier to take if they were just a bad team with no talent. It's the way they are losing which is killin' me. We all know the old saying that a 2 goal lead is the most dangerous in hockey? This team has taken that to a true art form. Add in the shaky goaltending, shorthanded goals, and senseless penalties, and its not hard to figure out. Like they say about being a bad alcoholic, you have to not only hit bottom, but bounce there several times before truly realizing you need help. I think this program is at that point, so the reality of a coaching change is at hand. I agree with the previously mentioned number crunching which shows that a buyout of the contract makes money sense. Staying away from the Alfond is the best message to send. I for one, have taken my final cold windy trek to the steam plant after yet another frustrating loss.

Huge football game at UNH at noon. Game is on CSN-NE. UM can clinch a share of the CAA title with a win and hopefully a first round bye and home game on December 3rd

Re: U Maine 2011-2012 Season (thread created when Maine was at .500) Thread

Losing 2 goals leads is the trademark of this team, look at the last few years and you can come up with many examples. It appears they are stuck in this funk and Timmay has clue how to get them out. It has to be a mental thing at this point and somehow they have to overcome it. Wish it would happen but don't see it happening.

Is it just me or is Diamond incapable of playing a good game on the road? Diamond does okay with keeping his cool at the Alfond but as soon as he goes to another rink he loses his temper and retaliates at dumb times. Not that he's perfect at the Alfond either but it seems to me he just can't put it all together on the road...

Re: U Maine 2011-2012 Season (thread created when Maine was at .500) Thread

Great job by Sullivan (35 saves, 13 grade A's). I wasn't at the game, but the stats indicated that Maine's defense was very good on the penalty kill, the minutemen went 0 - 7, while Maine was 1 - 3. The down side being Maine is committing too, many penalties.:( I don't know about Diamond, he has been benched and seemed to improve, now he has regressed. I wonder if he will ever understand. According to the radio, Tim was talking to him going off the ice after his 2nd penalty and then he commits a third in OT.:( Anthoine is improving and I'm hopeful the team will get better as the season goes along. I much prefer them improving as the season progresses, opposed to getting worse as has happened in past years.

Pretty accurate assessment.

The only thing I can come up with is 09-10 HE championship vs BC. And Provi last year; although playing well vs the Friars last year isn't a great indicator of ability.

Having said that, I have not seen any video of last nights game. And I have judged Diamond in the past and then needed to retract my statements after seeing video.

I was at the game and I thought all the calls on him were soft. Even the UMA fan that was sitting next to me thought the call in OT was ridiculous. He's got a bad rep and I'm not sure how you shake that off.

I think last night's result is one we'll take. It sucks blowing the two goal lead but its not like we ever play that great on the big sheets. Last night was the first time I've seen Rutt play and I liked what I saw a lot. He should be a good one. The lines last night were the best I've seen this year too, although I still think Flynn and Abbott should be split up. We need to win three out of the next four games and I think that it won't be that bad of first half outside of the disaster last weekend. It's nice that there are no more games the rest of the way at UNH, BC, or UMA which you could make an argument are the three places Maine struggles the most.
