I remember early last decade going to games...and "5,641" was the easiest number in the world to remember because the price of a potato seemed to have a better chance of changing than the attendance due to yet another remarkable sellout streak. In 1994, it took a terrible storm to disrupt a similar 120+ game sellout streak dating back to the late 80s. With a couple bumps here or there, this program was a near guarranteed sellout for 20 years.
Mind you this is PAID attendance....number of people actually walking through the door would be an even more interesting number:
2007....hangover from last years frozen four team, no shortage of season ticket holders yet....Avg of 5,231
2008....Around 4,700 ( 10% hit in 1 year, ouch)
2009....Around 4,300 (another 8.5% hit from previous year. 23%+ from just a few years ago when sellouts were the norm. AND THAT TEAM HAD A LATE SEASON SURGE!)
2010....Interest has skeptically returned with high expectations....Around 4,900!
This year, after 6 games.... We're already showing figures back around 4,300. And guess what? No one is going to buy up tickets to watch us lose to Boston, Boston or UNH this year. That number is going to get worse.
This year, I too dropped my tickets and will not renew until Tim is gone.
200,000/per over 2+ years now is a lot to buyout, but not only does Steve have connections to get it done, but..
At 18 homegames per year, and if the average goer spends $25 each on ticket/concession/50-50/whathaveyou.... If 440 more seats are sold per game than would otherwise be sold to watch a Tim-led team, you've recouped your losses. At 4,300 tickets per game, that means if you put someone in there that can attract that number back into the 4,700s....you're not taking any more of a hit than if you keep Tim around...
Act quickly, before that number enters the 3,000s!
"HOPEFULLY" there's CHANGE for the 2012-13 season and the Rebuilding in both the TEAM/Recruiting/Season Ticket Holders Renewal/and the big one for most Programs...the Deep Pocket Donor steps back in.Interesting post; thanks for digging up the numbers.
Your math might well add up, but I can't see it taking with the taxpayers, if only because taxes are all about the money, and college sports are supposed to have nothing to do with that... Any change at the top will have to be couched in different terms, if the working people are going to be expected to swallow it, and I don't see that happening.
Gotta say that I'm very happy that I didn't make the trip to UMass tonight. We stayed home and ate a bunch of Maine scallops, which no doubt went down much more smoothly than did the Maine hockey in Amherst. (And I hate how PC that crappy little town pretends to be, anyway.)
I feel bad for the Maine faithful who drove for hours to get there, but, remember, 2013-2014 is just around the corner!

Pretty accurate assessment.I'm new to this forum and have been a fan of the team since the late '80s. Frankly, it would be easier to take if they were just a bad team with no talent. It's the way they are losing which is killin' me. We all know the old saying that a 2 goal lead is the most dangerous in hockey? This team has taken that to a true art form. Add in the shaky goaltending, shorthanded goals, and senseless penalties, and its not hard to figure out. Like they say about being a bad alcoholic, you have to not only hit bottom, but bounce there several times before truly realizing you need help. I think this program is at that point, so the reality of a coaching change is at hand. I agree with the previously mentioned number crunching which shows that a buyout of the contract makes money sense. Staying away from the Alfond is the best message to send. I for one, have taken my final cold windy trek to the steam plant after yet another frustrating loss.
Is it just me or is Diamond incapable of playing a good game on the road? Diamond does okay with keeping his cool at the Alfond but as soon as he goes to another rink he loses his temper and retaliates at dumb times. Not that he's perfect at the Alfond either but it seems to me he just can't put it all together on the road...

Huge football game at UNH at noon. Game is on CSN-NE. UM can clinch a share of the CAA title with a win and hopefully a first round bye and home game on December 3rd
