Wasn't the $5 million spent on Alfond for new ice and less seating supposed to help this program win?

Re: U Maine 2011-2012 Season (thread created when Maine was at .500) Thread

It comes down to one very simple problem right now - who in their right mind is going to want to play for Maine? Short of recruiting some kid from Siberia where you can tell him that he'll feel right at home being up in Orono, there's not too many selling points these days....

I"m sure Abbott would like to fire Tim yesterday, but I have to believe that his hands are tied by James' gift to Whitehead... Whatever body allowed that crap to flush in the first place obviously was either not paying attention, or had an iron in the fire. I really find it hard to believe that Tim would still have his job if it were at all possible to get rid of him affordably.

(Hey, anybody want to talk Maine football? :))

But isn't it becoming more "affordable" now that Maine is losing paying customers by the boatload with each passing week, month, and season? Maine has lost at least 1,000 paying fans per game and at this rate could lose another 500 next season if they keep TIMMAY..........that's 1,500 (fans) x 16 (games) x $20 = $480,000 per season..........that's a lot of dough not coming through the turnstiles........and that doesn't include concessions and athetic store sales lost.

Re: U Maine 2011-2012 Season (thread created when Maine was at .500) Thread

I hear ya, but neither the gate nor the concessions are guaranteed, unlike the money already committed to Tim's contract. Buying him out is gonna be too tough a deal to sell to the public, I think.

Re: U Maine 2011-2012 Season (thread created when Maine was at .500) Thread

I got to see both games this weekend, Friday from the stands and Saturday as a guest in one of the boxes, and I've stumbled onto a way to make it a fairly enjoyable evening, at least from up in the box seats. Just limit yourself to two activities, watching Flynn and drinking beer/socializing. When he's on the ice, which is for much of the game, killing penalties, power play and his normal shifts, I watch him, and the rest of the time I drink beer and try very hard to not think about how the game's going. It's not really my preferred way to enjoy Maine hockey, but for now it'll have to do. I don't get to sit in the boxes very often though so if someone (Maine fans only) figures out a way to make watching from the stands of the Alfond at least bearable, I hope they post how it's done.

If I bring some beer next game. can I join you??

Sure. If the Black Hole defense steps up like they did in the second half yesterday, they'll have no issue shutting down the UNH offense. The Wildcat defense is ridiculously bad, and offensively we've been solid all year. Let's keep that musket and get at least a share of the CAA title (a Towson loss would make us outright champs, assuming UM wins).

In all my years watching Maine hockey........never heard the fans boo the team on a power play like they did on Sat night.............

Players were gassed..........Timmy has the play the bench more during the game...........coach like it's mites hockey......

Should be an improvement over a 1 line effort ..............!!

UNH will score points, but they can't stop a nosebleed, Maine should win easily next weekend and end UNH's long streak of NCAA appearances.

It's still strange thinking how it's any easy, no pressure weekend nowadays when you have a series with Maine, sort of like playing the Mack back in the day when they first joined HE, almost a guaranteed 4 points. There's no longer any question about Maine being awful now, the real question is, will they pull a Lake State and be lousy for another 15 years?

Except The Mack would beat the crap out of you on the ice.

And there are for Lowell? How do they get a kid like Wilson(who may not be the most talented guy out there, I don't know, but he makes most of Maine's forwards look like pikers), and Maine can't? What's Lowell got going for it?

Re: U Maine 2011-2012 Season (thread created when Maine was at .500) Thread

I was wondering why Larry's story in the BDN didn't have any quotes, so I checked the Press Herald write up and saw this nugget:

UMaine players were not made available to the media and, 25 minutes after the game, reporters were told that Maine coaches were in a meeting.

Interesting decision.

Their coach isn't incompetent.

Easy access to drugs and hookers :D:D

All kidding aside, it's only half an hour from Boston, which is definitely a strong selling point. Plus, you're not taking 5 hour bus trips every other weekend.

I wouldn't call our defense bad, I'd call it generous. ;)

Should be a good game. And may the better team win. That said, and though my gut tells me UNH will beat you this weekend, I think Maine has a better chance to win a game or two in the playoffs. Although the 'Cats can score with anybody, we certainly have defensive liabilities that, left uncorrected, will throttle any possible post-season success, should we earn a berth.

Also, the school has made tremendous progress to the campus and arena. Not sure if Maine fans have made the trek recently to the Tsongas Center, but it's pretty amazing. Looking at the arena from a player perspective and experiencing the arena, facilities and increase in attendance numbers factors in.

Now, I have never been to UMO - only seen it on tv, but hearing from my friends that have visited... They say the atmosphere is just awesome... And the fans are extremely loyal to the team. Maine is always a force... And will continue to recruit top teir players. So much history, so much support - Maine will be just fine.

I think messages were sent at the beginning of the game when Anthoine and Nemec were introduced over the PA in place of two others.

I've said this quite a few times and i'll say it again, who would Maine have hired if they would have gotten rid of timmy in the last three or four years? For me, that's the biggest reason he is still coach. The last thing you want is instability and a revolving door at the head coaching position. I think now that Montgomery is ready you will see him take charge after the season. He will have more to work with than people give Maine credit for too. Even though they might not have explosive offensive ability I like Maine's underclassmen a lot and it looks like there are some decent players lined up; Shore, Lomberg, Morgan, and Gareau. Maine definitely could use a couple stud defenseman and someone to sort the goalies out.

Yet somehow Paul Kariya came to Orono
