Re: TV: The League Of Anarchy Is A Bunch Of Justified Mad Men

From the trailer it looked like an Americans ripoff. Would you say this is accurate?

That's what I expected, and went into it wanting to hate it because. But as Scarlet said, it wasn't that bad, it was actually pretty fun.

Re: TV: The League Of Anarchy Is A Bunch Of Justified Mad Men

Right. When BoB was first broadcast, and I was recording every episode, when the last one ended, I stayed up all night and watched the whole thing over from the beginning, just because I didn't want to leave those characters(real people) just then. I wanted to see more of them, I couldn't let it go.

And yeah, The Pacific. I don't know if it was just the relative strength of the actors, the script, or the way they told the story, but none of the characters seemed very compelling, you weren't emotionally invested in them. Leckie was the most for me, and then he disappears halfway through, and it's like you've just been stranded, or thrown into an entirely new show. And other then him, Sledge, Basilone and Snafu, the rest all just seemed to blend together, to become indistinguishable. Whereas BOB you had about 12 main characters, and you knew every one.

Well, that's just it. The Pacific blended two biographical books together of two different sets of troops to form a single TV series, so it was disjointed from the beginning. The actors were good, but it was tough to get into these men's skins as we did with BoB becaus of that blending of storylines. In many respects it makes sense that they pulled from multiple sources, mainly because there wasn't any large piece of source material written like there was for Easy Company.

Same type of storyline - Russian spys living in the US, but set in present day and a somewhat different set up. I liked what they did so I will continue to watch.

I've watched the entire BoB series at least three times and have only watched The Pacific once. I own both on dvd.

I agree with the attachment that you reference. When it was over I actually felt like I knew those guys. I remember when some of those men have died since the show first aired and I felt like I lost something personal - which is silly, I know. That's how powerful that series was for me though.

In addition to the problems that you reference with The Pacific, I also don't think that the War in the Pacific was "romantic" in the way that the European theater seemed. It was one brutal fight to the death after the next as we hopped from one otherwise uninhabited island to the next that looked just like the last island we were on.

No Paris, no French countryside, no Belgium, no castles, no old European cities and towns, no war hookups ;), no forests or weather that are just like back home, no enemy that looks just like us and were our ancestors, etc...

It's because of the nature of the War in the Pacific. They needed to cover most of the major battles but you'd be hard pressed to find a group that fought through the whole thing. Time span is another factor, BoB essentially covers a year in the war while The Pacific covers 3+ years.

Yeah, it must truly be some twist of fate, or a perverse kind of luck, that found Easy Company at the heart of so many pivotal and important moments of WWII.

Finished BoB.

The first half of the series...meh. The last half? Progressively emotionally moving. Holy hannah. Ep 10 was a little dis-jointed, but understandable. Overall? That last half took a lot out of me. A lot. Very well done.

Best miniseries ever. The opening title song brings so much emotion when I listen/watch it. It's like a song that fits all the sacrifices those men and women made in WWII

I might lean towards Shogun, but that was before your time. ;)

Compared to the book, Shogun should have been shotgunned. They made a great political novel into a love story.

The tv and movie industry butchered both Taipan and Shogun. King Rat was not too bad.

This is why I was so hesitant about the movie versions of Princess Bride and Into the Woods. As it turned out, they were letter-perfect on the latter, and the cutting choices on the former (spoiler: while it changed the entire purpose of the story) produced a very entertaining movie.

The Pacific has some pretty good moments. Leckie and guys on the ship after Guadalcanal and the sailor telling them "you guys are famous, everyone knows about Guadalcanal." Part 10 is really good with everyone back home, Leckie and Vera (you missed the whole show!), Sledge applying at college (they taught me to kill Japs!) and breaking down hunting with his dad.

I had forgotten about when they get back home. I'll watch it again sometime and maybe I'll appreciate it more.

I enjoyed the pebble tossing. :D

That boy wasn't right...

Yeah. I was watching, and kept hearing that *blep* *blep* sound, and was wondering what was going on. And then they pull back.................

The last episode of The Pacific might have been my favorite. By that time, you had finally gotten a bit of a handle on the characters, and this episode was pretty much entirely character driven. Leckie shooting down Vera's lieutenant date, just on sheer confidence and personal stature built on seeing and surviving the things he had, was priceless. As was Sledge ribbing his old pal about his soon to be bride. Snafu just getting up and walking off the train, not even bothering to wake Sledge to say goodbye. The series could have used a few more moments like these, in my opinion.

Although, it's been a while since I first watched it, and admittedly, i wasn't as committed to it as I was BoB, so maybe I should watch it again and really delve into it.

One of my favorite scenes in the series, cracks me up everytime.
