Re: TV: The League Of Anarchy Is A Bunch Of Justified Mad Men

Schindler's List focuses on an entirely different type of concentration camp. While equally despicable, it's not filled with the living corpses that you see in BoB. SL focuses on a work camp, and yes there are Jews treated and killed with an inhumane great indifference, it's less gruesome than the display in BoB in sight.

Just the scene of the one prisoner hugging/kissing the US soldier....that sealed it for me. That single act...knowing the emotion behind it...yeah.

Re: TV: The League Of Anarchy Is A Bunch Of Justified Mad Men

When Liebgott had to tell them that they have to get back behind the gates, cripes. Rough.

Re: TV: The League Of Anarchy Is A Bunch Of Justified Mad Men

Finished BoB.

The first half of the series...meh. The last half? Progressively emotionally moving. Holy hannah. Ep 10 was a little dis-jointed, but understandable. Overall? That last half took a lot out of me. A lot. Very well done.

Why We Fight gets me every time. So many emotionally heavy scenes/vignettes.

The lady from the town is another.

First half of the series "meh" though?

Walking Dead was great tonight.

Not so much in the content/plot of the episode, but the delivery was really cool.

Also - the slow-mo walker deaths at the gate were a visual treat.

I think it's because at this time, there are other hard-hitting movies about WWII that are pretty raw, whereas when BoB was released, there were none. So there's a comparative factor. I have mentioned Private Ryan and Downfall. If I had seen BoB right when it was released...I'd imagine I'd fawn over it for what it presented.

Better Call Saul

It was great to be back in the hands of those directors/writers/producers again. The camera angles, music, characters and everything else were like an old friend.

Excited to see where this goes although the last 15 minutes was slightly disappointing as I was hoping we'd get to see more of "Saul" scheming and scuffling like he was attempting with the skater twins.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt though. They've earned it.

Overall I really liked it and look forward to more.

And I actually don't care for Saving Private Ryan.

We can disagree. It's all good.

After the first 30 minutes, I was not that impressed with Private Ryan. The first 30 min, though, holy F.

It's a matter of raw-ness, I think. The majority of war movies were of the John Wayne variety, and were not in-your-face detailed realism. Then BoB and Ryan and etc came along, and blew the doors open.

Re: TV: The League Of Anarchy Is A Bunch Of Justified Mad Men

Character development for me is king.

The realism of the battles is astounding in BoB and of course the D-Day landing from SPR in unbelievable and was groundbreaking at the time.

Once you've (I've) seen enough battle scenes though, they lose their impact without being engaged in the characters.

That's why I think so much of BoB. They invested time in the characters in the first few episodes which made me more attached to them later on in the story. Attached so that the deaths/injuries were more impactful and the funny moments were funnier, the mutual respect moments etc.

Imo, the second half of BoB wouldn't resonate nearly as much if we didn't know the characters so well.

The Pacific - also done by HBO lacks in this very important area which is a big part of why I didn't enjoy it as much. The battle scenes are horrific though as the conflict against the Japanese was quite a bit more brutal.

Re: TV: The League Of Anarchy Is A Bunch Of Justified Mad Men

The second half of BoB I agree with. You get those little jokes, those little things in the friendships between soldiers, thanks to the first half. I think that's why I thought "Downfall" was so good. I saw the doc of the interview of Hitler's secretary first, then saw the movie, and it was astounding. They didn't romanticize things. That sh* was real.

Saw a leak on Saul. Tuco makes an appearance. That is just unfair. I am gonna hafta order it now.

Just watched the encore presentation and upon a second viewing...

Yep. Great episode.

I liked it quite a bit, and I think some of it was that it had that same awesome feel that Breaking Bad had.
The Tuco appearance at the end was great. I knew that was going to happen when the Mexican lady got out of the car, though I was guessing that Hector Salamanca was going to wheel out of the front door. :p

Just watched Allegiance. It actually was not bad.

DING! :D

I certainly don't mind the tie-in(s), was just hoping they'd wait a bit and develop other stories before getting right to BB.

Like I said though - they get the benefit of my (very limited... nonexistent...) doubt.

It's also entirely possible that they felt some pressure to snag as many old BB viewers as they could right off the bat.

Right. When BoB was first broadcast, and I was recording every episode, when the last one ended, I stayed up all night and watched the whole thing over from the beginning, just because I didn't want to leave those characters(real people) just then. I wanted to see more of them, I couldn't let it go.

And yeah, The Pacific. I don't know if it was just the relative strength of the actors, the script, or the way they told the story, but none of the characters seemed very compelling, you weren't emotionally invested in them. Leckie was the most for me, and then he disappears halfway through, and it's like you've just been stranded, or thrown into an entirely new show. And other then him, Sledge, Basilone and Snafu, the rest all just seemed to blend together, to become indistinguishable. Whereas BOB you had about 12 main characters, and you knew every one.
