TV Shows Part 8: Cancel THIS.

Re: TV Shows Part 8: Cancel THIS.

I have the first season of Hell on Wheels on my netflix list and watched the first episode the other day. I liked it and hopefully will get the chance to watch the rest. Wish I could have watched them before this new season started. I was a huge fan of Deadwood so I figured I would like this too.
I thought the first episode was excellent, and I'm surprised it didn't get more people pulled in. There are a few episodes in the middle of the season that drag a bit, but they do build into a pretty exciting end to the season, so I'd recommend sticking with it through 1 season before making any judgements.

I'm thinking this might be up your alley. Or not. Wednesdays 10pm on ABC.

I saw most of the episode on a flight to Vegas (weird to watch it weeks before it premieres) it wasnt bad but kinda cliche. I might try it for a few episodes and see where it goes.

Also, going back to the TLC discussion from a few weeks back. I flipped the channel there last night, and watched Breaking Amish. Despite it being a reality TV show, it was actually pretty interesting and informative. It was the first episode, so it followed 4 Amish and 1 Mennonite "kids" (they're in their early 20's), while they were still in their Amish communities, and trying to make the decision about moving away and giving up the Amish lifestyle. It was very interesting to learn about what they consider OK, and what is taboo. For example, they can have a telephone, but it needs to be in a hut on the edge of the property. I'm guessing that this is the only episode that will have any kind of educational value, since the rest of the season just looks like Amish kids getting drunk and hooking up in NYC.

I wouldn't get your hopes up. Great premise, but the execution is sorely lacking, especially compared to Deadwood. I slogged through most of the first season, and never ended up watching the finale because I just didn't care.

It's another victim of AMC's curse for canceling Rubicon.

Anything compared to Deadwood is not going to be good. Deadwood was amazing. I've never seen Rubicon but I know it existed. But as far as a curse...well they seem to be doing really well with Breaking Bad, Mad Men and Walking Dead...

Mad Men and Breaking Bad came first, and the feeling was that AMC could do no wrong when it came to well-done television. Rubicon started off a little shaky, costing it a lot of audience, but became really, really good once they changed show-runners a few episodes in. It should have gotten another season, but at the same time, AMC started the zombie show, which got really big ratings, and AMC felt like they'd have no problem finding another critically-acclaimed show that could also possibly get zombie show numbers. Since then, pretty much every original show they've done has been a huge flop. AMC built their brand on being the place for excellent programming, but once MM and BB come to an end, they'll have the zombie show, which is popular, but not exactly critically-acclaimed, and a bunch of other network-level crap that nobody cares about.

Re: TV Shows Part 8: Cancel THIS.

I'm not too worried about AMC. They had huge wins with Breaking Bad and Mad Men, and since they only really need 4-5 shows to fill up their lineup (though, they could have more) it shouldn't be too tough to get another high qualitiy show to replace Breaking Bad next summer. Afterall they still have some time to find one.

Saw the Revolution pilot. Great concept, trite execution. Hopefully it will amount to something, but I am not hopeful.

why does that seem to happen soooo often? So many great concepts where the execution is the problem. how many shows do we give a try only to be disappointed when we know there is a great show in there and it's just dying to get made instead of what we are shown.

I am surprised at it not being great right away. JJ stuff usually grabs you right away, then frustrates the ever loving hell out of you for years even though you keep watching.

It's a lot easier to have a brilliant inspiration than to do the hard work of actually fleshing out something original.

Also, creativity is the opposite of popularity. The vast bulk of the audience wants to be comforted with the same old crap in a fancy new wrapper. They don't want to think, and they don't want to stray from the ruts of popular entertainment that go all the way back to Medieval fair puppet shows. Everyone along the business chain knows this and so there is constant pressure to dumb down, remove originality, and reduce investment risk.

New Touch episode on tonight. Somewhat bizarre to have it on a random Friday night in September...
