Re: TV Shows Part 8: Cancel THIS.

The show "Elementary" that will be on CBS this fall looks terrible. There's only one Sherlock (BBC).

And the Dwight Schrute spinoff will be titled "The Farm". Wonderful.

Re: TV Shows Part 8: Cancel THIS.

Mike is an idiot...

Stoned Harvey > everything! when they were going to go **** in Louis' office that was gold!

Suits is awesome :)

Re: TV Shows Part 8: Cancel THIS.

Just watched the entire season of Political Animals in one sitting. Wow, did the writers miss any political drama cliche?

Re: TV Shows Part 8: Cancel THIS.

I would just like to say I totally called the "twist" on Burn Notice back when (name redacted) made his first cameo :D

Re: TV Shows Part 8: Cancel THIS.

So I got tipped off from another forum about the latest episode of Storage Wars.

Basically, Darryl found some Magic: The Gathering cards in a unit and got $700 for 3 of them. Cool right?

Except for the fact the "geeks" he dealt with ripped him off to the tune of about $500.

And it's pretty much confirming that the show is fake and stuff is planted.

Anyone else watching Episodes? I thought the season finale was great.

Usually you'd look up stuff like this as there are pricing guides. Possible those guys were really that clueless or just didn't care since they made their money anyways? I agree that it's likely fake, but at least they put on a better show that TruTV's version called Storage Hunters. Now that is really bad since they don't even try to look real.

I'm starting to like Shipping Wars though. The commentary of them ripping on each other is awesome.

Re: TV Shows Part 8: Cancel THIS.

Shows I've been watching since I have more time at home. All in rerun at the moment, but most are new to me. A lot of BBC America!

Doctor Who
Kitchen Nightmares
Top Gear

Also, I sold 7000 magic cards for about $200. So I am sure I got less than their value.

Except unless you are selling directly to a collector you are never going to get anywhere near what is listed in any price guide. Most people who are buying to resell try to buy at about 50% to 65% of what they hope to resell the item for. Sometimes turning the stuff over quickly is better than hanging onto the item hoping to make more money on it sometime in the future.

Also, if you sell in bulk, you'll never get full book value for the collection. Closer to 10 to 25% for the book value if selling to a dealer, even most collectors will only pay 50% because they don't want/need everything that you have. The larger the collection, the steeper the discount that you have to give to move the items.

Found out that the local library has Suits (Season 1) on DVD for loan, score!

Why do they keep telling me I should watch The Voice?

Actually, why do they keep telling me I should watch all the crappy "talent" competitions?
Agreed. I will never take the advice of anyone that tells me to watch the stupid singing shows, the dancing shows and survivor.

This is somewhat of a different case with MtG cards as you have a fairly established market for the product with large buyers online listing their buy prices. If he really had what he had, an Unlimited Edition Black Lotus, it would've taken 30-60 minutes to find a good idea of its value to a card shop. I mean a little research would've told him what he had and what it was worth.

As for the fake part, the speculation is that he brought in what he got from the unit, the shoebox of worthless commons/uncommons and the binder with Collectors Edition cards (which are not tournament legal and therefore not worth much), showed them off and the dealer said "I'll give you $20 for them." Realizing that, the producers planted the valuable from the stores display case for the excitement.

That was kind of it for me, just way too unbelievable. Only in Magical Christmas Land would you buy an auction unit and find the most valuable card ever.

Re: TV Shows Part 8: Cancel THIS.

This makes me wonder whether the nice box holding my mostly-very-good-condition MTG cards stashed in a closet at my parents' house that I haven't looked at in over 10 years might potentially be worth a couple of hundred bucks.

Huh, you learn something new on USCHO every day.

I agree that it is very, very unlikely that a single unlimited Black Lotus would be mixed in with a bunch of other nondescript MTG cards.

Depending on the condition, Unlimited Black Lotus are selling in the range of 600-1500 on eBay. Again, no dealer who wants to keep the doors open is going to pay book for any card, and getting $700 now may be worth avoiding the hassle of getting the card graded and then spending the time to get the most money for the item from a collector.

jmh - the value will depend on which set the cards are from, the biggest value are in the Alpha/Beta/Unlimited sets (particularly the Power 9), but anything that has a copyright date of 1994 or 1995 can have significant value individually, after 1996 few cards have much value individually but the collection might have some value in the aggregate.

Re: TV Shows Part 8: Cancel THIS.

Did TWOP lose all their good writers? That site was fantastic in 2008. WTH happened to it?

Someone should create TWOPWOP.

They were bought out by....wait for it.....:

© 2012 Bravo Media LLC • A Division of NBCUniversal •

Which explains a lot. That site used have some of the best, most amusing writers out there. Now the recaps are nowhere near as funny. Or snarky.

That's a shame. It really shows.
