TV: One Person's Trash...

Re: TV: One Person's Trash...

Just finished E1 of The Weekly which is a series of behind the scene looks at the NYT and how they investigate, develop and break stories. E1 was about a charter school in LA masquerading as an academy that caters to getting black kids into high profile colleges such as Harvard, Stanford, etc. While it's true that kids have found their way into such schools the past few years, what they don't tell you is it's accomplished by way of teaching kids to do basically nothing but study for the ACT, falsifying transcripts and playing the desire for those institutions to be diverse. What this academy doesn't also advertise is the physical and mental abuse often heaped upon many of their students. And since the school is a charter they're not bound by the same laws public schools are in their state. E2 will be about the collapse of the taxi medallion industry in NYC.

Does anyone actually call Portland "Stumptown"?

Yes, it is one of the city's many nicknames. So called because during the land rush when the city was founded the streets were so bad there were tree stumps left in the middle of them. (Fun story: Portland was almost Boston, OR. The two developers who co-founded it flipped a coin. The winner was from Maine.)

The classy nickname is the Rose City. Also Soccer City USA based on our long history with the game. And, fittingly, the City of Bridges.

(My apologizes to those with iPacifiers. It deserves to be big.)

I didn’t know soccer history in this country started in 2001?

You misspelled 1968.

St. Louis gets chess.

If any city gets soccer it's actually NYC from all those Eemeegrants who won titles a century ago. But NYC is basically the city for everything so I can understand wanting to spread stuff around to the small fry.

The current incarnation of the Portland Timbers was started in 2001, taking the name of previous teams that folded in 1990 and 1982. (Because it will come up, the current incarnation of the Sounders dates back to 1994)

St. Louis has a more robust history dating to at least the 1920’s including numerous amateur, college, and professional teams along with having at least one person from the St. Louis area on every US World Cup team.

St. Louis gets soccer, Portland gets hipsters.

This from Seattle?

Matthew 7:5 FTW.

Portland association soccer league history goes back to at least 1902 but given the existence of teams and infrastructure in an organized league soccer in Portland obviously goes back well into the 19th century. I threw you a bone since presumably sports in Seattle at that time had not advanced beyond throwing rocks at Negroes in Aberdeen. Our first professional team was the first incarnation of the NASL Timbers in 1975. They reached the championship game. We were awarded the franchise because of a strong grassroots effort and semi-pro teams dating back to at least 1968.

Portland is Soccer City USA. Seattle is, presumably, Roofying Your Underage Hipster Girlfriend City USA, just nudging out Brooklyn, for once. We would also have accepted Dying 1990s Overhyped Boomtown USA.

A Portland person calling Seattle a bunch of racists is quite rich considering, ya know, the entire history of Oregon (and Seattle won the f-ing Stanley Cup in 1917 so let’s not talk about sports history). Also, I didn’t have Seattle in this discussion outside of one comparison for history sake, I was talking about St. Louis. In terms of impact on the history of US Soccer St. Louis and New Jersey have far more claim to the title (and it really should go to St. Louis).

But back to TV, American Ninja Warrior will be wrapping up soon and supposedly someone is going to win again.

Chappelle's new Netflix special:

Holy hannah. He is beyond fuggit stage, and it's hilarious. Some of the jokes...wow. Highly recommend.

I feel like this was written just for you.
...there are also many who consider this to be one of his best performances. And among that group are trolls, professional bigots, white supremacists, Nazi sympathizers and more of the very worst white people; an adoration due to the parallels between their sensibilities and his.
Now, is it possible to like a thing a racist also likes without exposing a deep deficit within you? Of course! I’m sure many racists like pizza because pizza is ****ing awesome. ****, Donald Trump loves shiny ****, and the space shoes I’m rocking today proves that affinity is shared by me. But if you’ve just entered a room, and you find yourself surrounded by Nazis, you should probably ask yourself how you got there and what you need to do to leave.

So wait...now liking Dave Chappelle makes you bad? Are you bleeping kidding me? Apparently I am one of the "worst white people" because I paid to see him live.

Of course half the reason these clowns dont like him is he ripped them to shreds for tarring and feathering anyone who dares tells an off color joke. Social Justice Warriors cant stand to be called out for their hypocrisy and bs. (the fact that it is the root doing it is even more hilarious for about a dozen reasons)

Thank God Carlin and Richard Pryor are dead because they would be destroyed in today's culture by the Twitter Nazis. The Twitter Nazis are the true "worst white people" and it isnt even close. At least Nazis accept who they are...Twitter Nazis are just as hateful they just hate anyone who doesnt love everything they love. They also hate anything that might offend. They are the faculty at PCU...only they exist in real life. You dont have to think he is funny (that is a matter of taste) but the backlash by the uber sensitive ones is just pathetic. Whats worse, it is perfectly in line with everything he said about them. They dont even realize how big of cliches they truly are. They also dont realize how metaphor or jokes work...because they involves critical thinking.

Never change though...
