Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

I'm not big on superhero shows either. Legion, so far, has been only a small step down from an HBO show.

There are a few hokey parts, but just like Kepler said it's a really good psychological drama.

I thought you said "hockey" parts and then I might have watched. I can't stand superhero stuff either

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

So I was thinking about the "golden age of TV," and trying to recall the shows I would put in the very top percentile. I do think they are disproportionately in the past decade.

Let's just take the local maximum of each show. For instance, MASH was crap for most of the latter 2/3rds of its run but at its best it was brilliant. Cheers was only truly great the first 3 years, but it was GREAT.

Here are the American (and one Canadian) TV shows I would list as worth keeping if we had limited time and resources, in alpha order, at their VERY best:

30 Rock
All in the Family
American Horror Story
Archer
Atlanta

Battlestar Galactica
The Bob Newhart Show
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
The Carol Burnett Show
Cheers
The Colbert Report
Community
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

TDS
Dream On
Fargo
Firefly
Full Frontal
Game of Thrones

Get Smart
The Honeymooners
House
House of Cards
The Larry Sanders Show
Last Week Tonight
Mad Men

MASH
Moonlighting
Mr Robot
MTM
The Muppet Show
The Night Of
The Nightly Show

Northern Exposure
The OA
The Odd Couple
The Office
Orange is the New Black
SCTV
The Simpsons
SNL
Soap
South Park
Star Trek
Stranger Things
The Twilight Zone
Twin Peaks
Veep
Westworld

The X Files
The Young Pope

Current shows are well over-represented.

Shows with only 1 year of results (no matter how good) should not go in over SNL, SCTV, X-Files, The Office, Northern Exposure, and House. And your bias notwithstanding Seinfeld deserves consideration.

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

Ok, the opening credits of The Young Pope episode six are incredible. Did I completely miss the meteor the first five episodes?

This really is an art film with a budget. Kepler was right. Episode five really made that obvious.

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

I'd add Futurama and Star Trek TNG if your Star Trek wasn't a catch all. Sopranos is probably worth mentioning. I also think Frasier warrants some consideration considering it's only one of two laugh track showsI ever really liked (Newsradio). I'm also surprised The West Wing wasn't mentioned.

I couldn't stand The OA. It tried to be good but failed. Maybe I'll give it another shot. Seinfeld was also the single most-overrated show of all time. It had a few decent one-liners but I'd put Curb in over Seinfeld every time. Curb is everything Seinfeld failed to be (for me).

Agree on Curb, also think The Americans has been fantastic

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

How is Friday Night Lights not on this list??? Also, The Americans.

It's his own, personal list. It's also clear that he's very much willing to be wrong.

The OA wasn't that good. It wasn't horrible, but far from great.

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

I tried starting the Americans but Xfinity made me pay instead of it being free on demand. I am still hoping it drops on Netflix, but I'm not optimistic.

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

While I hate Seinfeld, that should definitely be on the list of greatest shows ever, due to longevity and popularity and cultural reference.

True Detective only had the one good year, but man, it was a doozie.

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

Sorry, but popularity and references don't make a show great. Otherwise Friends would be on everyone's list.

That was an awesome show for about the first four seasons, maybe 5, then they got lazy and shifted into cliched network sitcom.

If you have Amazon Prime, the first few seasons are on it up through the season before last. The prior season comes out a few weeks prior to the new season's premiere.

I do the season pass. It's around $15/$20, IIRC, but the episodes are yours to "keep" in your video library. Due to the few shows I watch, it's not worth it for me to get Prime just to get the exclusive shows they have.

I have it for other reasons, the streaming TV is just a bonus. Besides, there are few shows exclusive on Prime that interest me that I can't also get on either Hulu or Netflix.

I just don't buy enough in a year to justify the Prime cost. It's a great deal, but not for me personally.
