Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

Finished Stranger Things. Excellent, through and through. I hope that's it, though. I don't need anymore.

Shout out to old horror/monster movies that I can recall off the top of my head (in spoiler text). I'm not including generic parallels, e.g. (Carrie, Firestarter -- telekenesis) but only explicit set/score/dialog/plot references)

* for many references

Jaws -- wall poster
Evil Dead -- wall poster
Halloween -- reference in dialog
Altered States -- sensory deprivation tank
The Thing (remake) -- snippet on teacher's TV
The Thing (original) -- burning the monster scene (a perfect remake shot)
Nightmare on Elm Street -- wall protrusion
Silent Hill -- "snow", toggled reality
Close Encounters -- the lights
Aliens -- incubation, creepy bio-"architecture"
Poltergeist -- *
Stand By Me -- *
X Files -- *
Dreamcatcher -- El/Duddits
Firefly -- El/River
Other Stephen King not mentioned above -- explicit shout out in dialog, titles and credits font
Slender Man -- the Big Bad

There's probably a ton of body horror imagery too, but I don't go near that genre so it would be lost on me.

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

The night of had a fairly predictable ending. Overall it was a great series. Somewhat petered out near the end of the series for me.

I liked it too, overall, a very good series.

Spoilers: One thing that I did not like was the silly story line about the lawyer girl "falling for" Naz. Completely unbelievable, in my opinion. And very unnecessary for the overall plot. There were many ways they could have gotten John to be the lawyer to give the closing statements, if that was what they were going for.

I was expecting a twist at the end, something like, he gets acquitted, but then we find out he did it, and he's been playing everyone. The way they did it worked, and I don't have any problem with it though.

100% agree.

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

I enjoy the show a lot. I'd imagine El Chapo Guzman could be a good story for a coupla years.

Have you seen Queen of the South? It's pretty good. Columbian coke funneled through Mexico into Texas.

Cartels for all.

I saw the movie that incorporated her character...it was meh. Would like to learn more about her, though. Big organized crime (non-fiction) fan.

3 days until more "Plata o plomo?" :D

Narcos S2:

Two eps in, and it's still quality. There are some hints as to where the show is going to go after this season, and where it's going this season. Gonna try and pace myself, but I'm pretty sure I'll give in and watch the full season within the week.

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

Just finished The Night Of. Did not realize until the final episode that John was Jesus.

Spoilers: I know some were disappointed by Chandra being so reckless. I didn't really believe it, either, however I liked the parallel with Naz having his entire life turned upside down with one night of reckless behavior. Plus, like Naz, who says she wasn't somewhat more than she seemed?

After not really being engaged by the preliminary courtroom scenes, I loved the cross examinations, particularly of the pathologist and Naz. My friend has litigated in NYC courtrooms and he assures me there are judges like that (though never in a million years would an experienced attorney speak to a judge in chambers with others there as John did -- that would be career suicide).

There were so many scenes throughout the show that were perfect and very impressively acted. The scene of Mom in the bathroom, and later Mom in the kitchen, made Dr. Mrs. white knuckled and nearly tearful. That is exactly how it would go down if Mom had even a hint of doubt.

Poor Duane Reed.

Naz' expressions staring at his friend rat him out in court, and then later in the diner, were three layers deep and perfect in every way. John's misread of the situation, "see, you did learn a few things in there" made me wonder what else John didn't know.

The scenes with Naz' father and the other two cabbies were excellent. Like many other scenes, they were beautiful theatrical set pieces. Movies rarely come up to the level of theater in acting or depth of character, but so many of the characters in this (Naz, Salim, John, Safar, Andrea, and many bit players) did.

My bet from about 2/3 of the way through was that Naz would be acquitted but while at Rikers he would kill somebody else and so wind up in prison for that. I'm happy to be wrong, and IMO their ending was superior. I wanted Naz out because now he's an entirely different person released into a different world.

Solid A, bordering on A+.

Sonia Braga's niece. ;)

F'real? Interesting. I need to pick up some more books on the cartels, given their complexity. They are not as simple as the other "mafias" in the world. I've read up on the Zetas, but that's about it.

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

Through 7 eps of Narcos S2. Yeah, they ain't f*ing around anymore. I'm actually more excited as to where they take the series from here. If they dip into the Queen, or the Sinaloa and Zetas battles....man........

It sounds like they made Vinny Chase proud.

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

If Kepler gets his Bachelorette updates then I get to do American Ninja Warrior. :p

They just completed Stage 1 and, while they didn't do a radical redesign like they do on Sasuke after a Kanzesheiha, the course was made difficult enough to only have 17 finishers, a good attrition number for Stage 1 (especially after last years laughable 38).

The big news of course was we finally had a woman finish Stage 1! While she's not the first, a woman cleared Stage 1 in Japan in one of the early ones (my Google fu is failing me *edit* it was Chie Nishimura in Sasuke 2), her accomplishment is definitely worthy of praise, especially given the low completion rate this year and the fact Stage 1 is significantly more difficult than early Sasuke (in fact I'd say Stage 1 ANW is more difficult than the current Stage 1 on Sasuke).

Like I said, Stage 1 got tougher with newer obstacles that knocked out a fair few of the "known" competitors, including Geoff Britten (who got through Stage 4 last year), on the first obstacle! But I was happy to see some of the other guys get through like Drew Dreschel and Brian Arnold.

Still hope they change Stage 1 a bunch next year, get rid of the Jumping Spider, Propeller Bar, and Sonic Road for new stuff. From the preview stuff Stage 2 looks to have gotten an overhaul and Stage 3 has had its craziness ramped up. I doubt we get a winner this year but that's ok. Although I'd like to see Dreschel finally get one.

OK, but please use spoiler font or wait a week.

For the record, ANW is awesome.

BTW, I have not been doing Bachelor in Paradise updates. So apparently I have my limit.

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

Carlson got 20 million.

Ailes and the FNC lawyers are already at it over who is really gonna pay. We all win when the evil turn cannibal.

Fox is going to be a hollow shell when Trump News launches on 11/10.

Hey if it airs in Alaska then the rest of you had plenty of time to watch! :D

Re: TV: Give Me That Remote!

Ailes should have sexually harassed Greta too. He could have pleaded insanity and no heterosexual jury in the country would have ruled otherwise.
