Re: TV 4 - Renewed for another thread!!!

Was that the season finale of Chuck last night?

Re: TV 4 - Renewed for another thread!!!

All shows gradually get sappier and stupider. If nothing else there is a Peter Principle where the good writers move on and the mediocre writers are left. Or there is the MASH Effect where the pretty, stupid people who say the lines accumulate enough power and ego that they start to think they can write and direct, instead of leaving that to the smart, ugly people. Or a show becomes a franchise and the network stops allowing risks because the stakes are higher. And finally there is Regression towards Niceness, where flawed, foil characters are redeemed and become unobjectionable and uninteresting (Frank Burns, Lou Grant, Archie Bunker). This has happened with every show that ever ran for more than 4 years. Animated shows seem to be an exception, because the talent can't take over. Cartman doesn't lobby for a softer character and Homer doesn't try to write.

I agree with most of this; MASH still did a lot of things right, towards the end of its run. Much of that was because even though episodes were produced by Alan Alda, the crew still used input from the same sets of actual doctors, and soldiers. There are some episodes that I watched, where without having seen the credit, I said, "yup, Alda directed this", but for the most part, MASH kept its thing going right til the end -- evidenced by the fact they the country basically shut down the night the finale (Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen -- watch it, if you can) aired.

One of the other few shows I've gotten sucked into is NCIS; anybody else watching this season unravel? I find it interesting that although not involved much into the nitty gritty of the script, Mark Harmon is producing episodes that directly involved his character, and what could possible be his character's undoing . . .

Re: TV 4 - Renewed for another thread!!!

I think Harmon's producing credit doesn't mean much, it's just a ceremonial title that show's creators give the big guns to throw them a little more cash and keep them happy, make them feel important, feed their ego. They have little to do with the actual day to day production of the show. Happens in the movies too.

Look at some of the other shows where the stars get a production credit; Gary Sinise and William Peterson on their respective CSI shows, Boreanez and Deschanel on Bones, probably a ton more if I had the time to look for them.

Re: TV 4 - Renewed for another thread!!!

Does anyone else see the wonderful irony in these two statements? :D

"House, you cost the hospital millions of dollars in unnecessary tests, diagnosed the patient incorrectly five times and opened us up to a whole host of lawsuits...but you got lucky and something Wilson said in passing made you think of an answer out of Bio 101...so you're a hero."

Season 1 of V just finished, and while it bordered on the cheesy (is there a sci-fi show that doesn't?) I found it fairly intriguing and enteraining. I would have preferred if not a mini-series something that would not have run on for multiple seasons, but if they do Season 2 as well as 1 then it will be worth the watch.

I was hoping someone would pick up on that...I almost did another post with NCIS just to make it even more obvious but I had to study for my final ;)

Re: TV 4 - Renewed for another thread!!!

Thanks! They didn't have previews at the end of the episode, but it felt like a weird place to stop.

I posted a link to the preview for next weeks episode...its on this page if you look ;)

Re: TV 4 - Renewed for another thread!!!

In the little baggage montage at the end of this week's HIMYM, I like how there were two women whose baggage said "SLEPT WITH BARNEY".

Re: TV 4 - Renewed for another thread!!!

Juuuuust about caught up with Breaking Bad. Finished Ep4, out of 9 total. (spoiler)
where the half and half distribution is forced by Restaurant Man

I should see the direction this is going, but given this show, and shows like this, I see a red herring up ahead.

Re: TV 4 - Renewed for another thread!!!

Anyone watch The Good Guys last night?

It's totally unbelievable, and kinda stupid, but it was a whole lot of fun. Kinda like an even more over the top Human Target. I'll keep watching.

And for whatever reason, I find Nia Vardelos to be incredibly sexy. :o

Totally called the ending of Community!

Great first season...Hope they can keep it up next season.

If you haven't watched...i strongly suggest you either buy the first season or watch it on Hulu. It's fan-f'in-tastic.

Re: TV 4 - Renewed for another thread!!!

I haven't complained about The Office in a while. But that has to be the shallowest 30 minutes in all of television.

I said a couple pages ago that I kind of liked last weeks episode, laughed out loud a couple of times.

Agree that this was a terrible way to go out though.

Re: TV 4 - Renewed for another thread!!!

Finally! Caught up with Breaking Bad. Awesome. The show is literally punch you in the face gripping drama. ONE flaw (just so happens that it was in the latest show, ep 9, IIRC). Whited out, for courtesy:

Gambling????? For *ing real? I'm honestly shocked that they didn't go the whole nine yards and say it was online gambling. Might as well have gone the completely cliched route and said a dead relative died. Gambling as a form of unaccounted-for-money is the "the dog ate my homework" or "my computer crashed" excuse. Lazy. Completely lazy.

I do like that the biggest annoyance of the show (the sister, Marie) is the most "innocent" (Walter Jr doesn't really count, since he's a kid and all).

Smartest decision Jeffrey Winger has ever made.
