Re: TV 4 - Renewed for another thread!!!
Thanks to Mrs. EoDS's adoration of one Andrew Garcia, I've been quasi-forced into finally giving American Idol a chance.
I've got to say I'm feeling very justified in my long standing disinterest in the show. The world of the pop "musician" truly has become as superficial as it gets. I've seen a few weeks of this show and already I can see why I've always hated every Idol contestant that found their way to the radio. Each week, these contestants get their judgement, and its only about 1/3 honest musical critique.
The rest of it is deciding if they like the contestant's look, or what genre the contest should be pigeonholing themselves in and talking about making a song "current" (because, evidently, the quality of song decreases over time... somehow... I don't know... "I Want To Take You Higher", for instance, is still as awesome today as it was over 40 years ago when it was written). And the desire by the judges to view music in the shallowest of ways must certainly work on the contestants, because they're freaking idiots. Twice last night, a contestant was asked what they thought of the meaning of the song they just sang. They reacted with all the intellectual depth of a hamster, by simply thinking one lyric and essentially repeating it.
One sang a boring version "Across the Universe", and reacted this way:

The other one went about as dimwitted as possible ("Jealous Guy" is about... a jealous guy? no way!), although to be fair he was probably joking:
<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/hgQVRM1yu8s&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0&start=465"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/hgQVRM1yu8s&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0&start=465" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>
In conclusion: I hope all of Mrs. EoDS's favorite singers get voted off ASAP so I'm not semi-obligated to watch this for more than another week or two.
