TV 20 - Sorry no fancy title

Started watching Dark Winds on Netflix based on an article I saw that basically said "if you like True Detective you'll like Dark Winds". One episode in and yeah so far so good, very intriguing. 2 seasons available and I believe a third is in production

I have read the first 7 books in the series. The first 4 are excellent.

The series takes a lot of liberties, but it's not bad, at least in S1. It is nothing like True Detective -- in fact I'd say it's the opposite. If you like S1, I strongly recommend the books (they are meant to be read in order). Leaphorn is an outstanding literary character.

I will say this for the series, though. The casting for Leaphorn and Chee is excellent, and the filming manages to capture the beauty and quiet of the landscape.

It seems like the recommendation in the article was based more on the "thriller, crime series" aspect more than anything else. I doubt I get to the books for various reasons but I will keep them in mind.

The books are very, very quiet. They are psychological studies, and also theme pieces about the Navajo way. I think they are beautiful, which is why I was a little disappointed by the shortcuts and derpitude you will always need to hold a mass audience's interest. I will say though they are an easy read. Hillerman was a talented writer. He has a good sense of humor, and his writing is very simple and clear. I'd like to have known him.

Zahn McClarnon rules, so I’ve had that show on my radar. He’s also great in Longmire, and one of the dwindling number of bright spots during Westworld season two.

Finished s3 of The Bear. I...didn't like it that much. I feel like, in 9 episodes, there was only 3 episodes worth of dialogue.

Finished Season 1 of Dark Winds. A little anti-climatic, but otherwise pretty good. Knowing nothing of the books/source material, I'd give it an A-. Glad the seasons are only 6 episodes though, as stretching that any further would have really hurt I think. Definitely pleased with acting from the leads though, and many of the other supporting cast honestly.

I enjoyed a lot of Season 3 (especially once I got to the end where McHale shines) but it did not walk that razor's edge between awesome and self indulgent like it did the 2 previous seasons. Plus you have no real idea how much time is passing (it feels like weeks but sometimes it sounds like hours) and I feel they extended some of the melodrama and fighting too much. You could cut out about 2 episodes worth of stuff (like every time the brothers fight about stuff for no reason...or half the mentions of "Claire Bear" which is just overdone and rather wasted) and everything flows way better.

The thing is, I think Season 3 will be better if Season 4 plays off it in the right ways. Season 3 is a friggin downer most of the time because of how Season 2 ends but there is the possibility that things could swing up in 4 and that is needed badly. If Season 4 is just more melodrama and whining and no one grows up at all it will be unwatchable.

Guess I'm in the minority for thoroughly enjoying S3.:p

We're not done yet but I am fine with it. There have been a couple poor episodes -- Sydney would be the worst character on the show if it hadn't been for Clare Bear and I do not care at all about her backstory or her internal monologue or her father -- but that was also true of S2 (I don't remember a terrible episode in S1 but I could be sunsetting). Napkins was a solid 8 (c.f. Forks' 10). I like that Carmy is dialed back; they did him to death in S1-2 and the only thing that saved it was his incredible acting.

Pilot episode of Kaos was good. Casting is excellent. It's fun guessing who's who as they walk on, and trying to project how the myths will be incorporated. Kinda spoils any surprises, but it's a different sort of pleasure.

Happy bell riots day for those who celebrate.

Actually the Bell Riots started on September 1st ;)

(in the episode they travel back to August 30th but they aren't assaulted until August 31st and the riots start the next morning)

And yes...that makes us:

S2 of Sherwood (family crime drama) from the BBC has sure started out with a bang. Very well done.

I enjoyed the first 2 eps of English Teacher on FX. A sitcom that actually made me laugh and will surely cause any MAGAs that choose to watch to lose their minds.

Also watched a few episodes of a show called My Strange Arrest on A&E. To no surprise the state with the most # of stories was FL, WI was well represented, but the very last story of the season came from none other than Edina.
