Re: TV 10: Blacklisted Sons: The Musical

My wife likes it, and she puts up with a lot of crap during the college football season.

Exactly. I watch a lot of TV which, were it not for the quotidian miracle of Mrs. Kepler returning to my house, I would never watch again.

At least the ratings are good so we get one more season at least. :)

This may have been the breakthrough season. At the beginning of the season nobody at my work knew it existed. By the end at least 6 guys watched regularly.

It helps that the hot little gymnast crushed the course this season. That got a lot of guys' attention.

I just wish they had left the format more like the Japanese version. Just take 100 or 200 people and do the four stages with a time limit. If you make it you're through to the next stage and if you don't you don't. There were just too many preliminary stages for my taste.

Well there's two prelim stages, just in different regions. Prelim stages are necessity though just because of the population of the country. Granted, I wish they wouldn't do wild card entries to the finals like they do. Just have 5 regionals, take 20 from each, boom you've got your 100.

It'll be interesting to see what changes they'll make to the stages. The Japanese has actually gotten rid of the Spider Jump on the first stage but added a second Warped Wall, the second stage has a swim tank that has jets pushing you back, and the Crazy Cliffhanger, a similar one but with a 180 degree turn.

I think so to. It was regularly the top show in it's timeslot during the summer and it does well in the right demographics.

It's weird seeing the critics take on it though, as they always compare it to Wipeout.

They can't have really watched it, then. The people who succeed at the course are incredible athletes.

I agree the hot gymnast helped. She also had a great personality -- she was my wife's favorite competitor.

The prelim stages build "brand recognition" for the athletes which is important for the network since there is no natural "side" for people to root for (something I think is actually a good thing, since I like the fact that everybody is rooting for every athlete on every run). The backstories are a waste of time but no worse than the up close and personal Olympic backstories which are supposedly popular, I assume among people who don't care about the sport but are unaccountably watching the sport.
