tUMD @ UMTC: Last time we played in MPLS tDome didn't have a roof!

Re: tUMD @ UMTC: Last time we played in MPLS tDome didn't have a roof!

4 games in a row, not involving the same team (unlike a weekend series). ;)

Sweeps are tough to come by in this conference. And our OOC record is outstanding. I'm just seeing a lot of over-reaction here because we're not "dominating" like the women's team or something. Last night in GPL chat, someone was wondering if the #2 PWR ranking was false advertising, and our conference standing was more indicative of how good we were. AND THEY WERE SERIOUS.

Re: tUMD @ UMTC: Last time we played in MPLS tDome didn't have a roof!

With all due respect (i.e. none for you :p) ****** off. I've been on that wagon since before you even knew it existed (maybe before you existed?).

This is a euphemism for being old. Dam old. :D

I am very concerned with this team's inconsistency. They are going to need 4 really good games in a row against good teams to win the big one. I have yet to see evidence that they can put two big efforts together in 2013 far less 4.

I agree with the old guy. ;)

So you don't think the Gophers looked like crap for long stretches in their own zone? Okay.

We're 2nd in the conference and the nation!!!!!!

If you're worried, then get off the bandwagon. We don't need you. Talk about a bunch of Chicken Littles!

I've stuck by this team thru thick and thin for three decades. If I was going to jump off the bandwagon there were more appropriate times to do so.

I don't think it is completely inappropriate to worry about the consistency of this team this late in the season. Not saying I'm not happy with where they are at, but if they play the way they played this weekend during the tourney, they won't get very far. And it's been a month plus since they have put two solid games together back-to-back. That's just an honest assessment.

No one is expecting the guys to roll like the ladies. Too much parity on the men's side. It would be nice to see them put a few wins together back to back. Worrying about the consistency of the team doesn't equate to panic or not supporting the team. I'd like to see the team go into the post season with some momentum, and they really don't have a ton of that right now.

Not saying they are perfect. However, they have not lost a series this year. And in the tourneys, they don't play the same team twice. It's one-and-done. We have single digits in the loss column. I'm not worried.

I cannot imagine the commentary on here and GPL if Crandall got control of the puck during the OT PP...

I don't think there would be any commentary since every Gopher fan would've stormed the officials dressing room to murder Don Adam.

Re: tUMD @ UMTC: Last time we played in MPLS tDome didn't have a roof!

I think the mentality the coaches are trying to instill is, "this is the time of year to fire on all cylinders for every game and get rewarded". There's obviously a lot more at stake now with only two weeks remaining in the regular season (e.g. WCHA standings, the Mac, playoff readiness, etc.). I find it hard to believe the coaching staff and players have given up on winning the Mac when they all understand how close this WCHA race is. It's very likely winning the Mac will come down to the final week of regular season play. Every game is important with broad implications should be the message in the locker room.

Yeah, I wouldn't claim that the players and coaches don't care about winning the MacNaughton or that they have given up on it. But that's different than saying that as a team, collectively, it's not what they have their sights set on. To me, it seems more that the Mac is just 1 accolade they can add to their list along the way. It's a means to and end, and not an end goal in-and-of itself. That's the feeling I get.

During Lucia's tenure, Gopher teams that have 3 or less WCHA sweeps (e.g. The three seasons from hell: 08-11) did not even make the NCAAs. IF this team does manage to make it to the FF, it will go down in the annals of the Lucia years as the most salient statistical outlier ever in that category.
Maybe it's not a very relevant statistical category?

Look, there are certainly reasons to have some worries and to think MN might not be capable of a long play-off run. But there are also a lot of reasons to think they are capable of it. Like I said, I'm not reading too much into this weekend in regards to the NCAA Tournament. And if you believe Lucia in his post-game comments, neither is he.

It's not like MN looked bad this weekend. Duluth played a pretty good series. I gotta give Duluth credit. They aren't a bad team when they come to play. They skate well, and have a PP rolling at 20% on the season. After the first MN goal they got good goaltending all weekend, and I think they looked like they wanted it just a little bit more.

The difference between a comfortable win and a late ENG win on Friday, and the the difference between winning or tying on Saturday, really came down to special teams.

At present this team has lost 6 games and even if half the ties were instead losses then they would be at 9. Last year they lost lost 14 games and earned 0, 4, 4 and 2 points their last 4 series. That team went to the FF. The '03 team (which I seem to recall did ok in the NCAAs) finished their last 4 WCHA series with 4, 2, 2 and 3 points including 3 games in OT. The whole body of work for this team speaks to solid goaltending, solid offense, excellent special teams and good but sometimes spotty defense. They are 2nd in conference, 2nd in PWR, etc., etc., etc. Give the doom and gloom a rest. :)

Good God I haven't been saying that the Gophers are dead. Just saying that I haven't been impressed with their play the last few games, and that I hope they aren't trending the wrong way. Cripes. :)

The comments posted by Gopher fans in the last couple of pages have been spot on. Which is why I respect their realistic analysis of their team. Jan posters are, for the most part, woofers trying to bait others into woofing. Which has lessened my opinion of the Jan fanbase and the overall experience in their rink. Especially the Ric Flair PA guy....really? Kinda tough to diss Jan when one of my fellow HS sports parent's kid plays for them....yeah, I vote for a Huskie for Hobey daily.

Am I in the minority in thinking that WASN'T a penalty on the Serratore hit? Yeah, it ended up being pretty nasty, but just because a guy ends up getting hurt doesn't make it a penalty. It turned out pretty ugly for Serratore, but I didn't think it was a clean cut penalty and watching the game with my brother, he agreed.

Disappointed to not get a sweep, but (obvious comment alert) 3pts is better than 2pts. A split against DU and take care of business against Bemidji and I think this team will be in a good place going in the the WCHAs.

This is another obvious comment, but dammmmmmn is Wilcox good!! He was one goofy bounce off the side of the net from getting the Gophers out of there with a sweep. Yeah, that play started because he was unable to control the puck off the initial shot, but the ended up being a fluky goal and I don't blame him for it. He continues to just amaze me even after a not so great night on Friday.

I think it could have definitely been either interference or boarding, but it is what it is.

Agree on Wilcox.

It coulda been, but I don't think it was clean cut. And I just didn't agree with Lucia pointing at Serratore on the bench as if he was saying, "My guy got hurt, that had to have a been a penalty!!!!".

I would venture to guess having a successful program might have something to do with the critical analysis. Many of them nitpick knowing the club can always play a lot better. It bugs us if they don't work hard in a nightly basis. By following them closely many fans don't worry about the other team and how they are playing it is more important the gophers play well. If they do more then likely Minnesota wins.

Correct, and I would add sustained success over many decades creates a fanbase that will not be satisfied with anything less than a NCAA title. In the current WCHA, UMTC, North Dakota, Denver and Wisconsin fall in the category.

All others consider home ice in league playoffs as a measuring stick for a good season. An NCAA invite and a run to the FF is dessert and a NCAA title the cherry on top. tUMD with two FFs and one natty under Sandelin's tenure has somewhat created a success based culture, but seasons like this bring fans back down. tUMD rebuilding team this year, not reloading.

I realize you said "for the most part," but there is a large contingent of SCSU fans that dislike the same SCSU fans that you dislike. A lot of us roll our eyes at the announcer also (who I sort of know, and is a very nice guy in life). I don't post here as much as I used to because people assume the worst just because I root for St. Cloud (and I don't necessarily blame them).

As for UMD, I think they underachieved this year with the talent they have. However, they have shown promise in weekends like this past one and I don't think they'll have to slog through any single-digit win seasons before returning to competitiveness like they have in the past. Next year could be better already. We really need a scorer or two, but we don't lose a ton to graduation and I think it's realistic to hope that Herbert returns to form and Cameranesi continues to develop. Goaltending was my main concern going into the season, and I think those concerns have proven to be founded, but McNeely has shown a lot of promise, and if he can find some consistency, he could be very good going forward. Stalock was also inconsistent his freshman year, and that turned out really well. Plus, UMD has continued to recruit well in recent years.
