Trump First Term I: I for One Welcome Our New Trumpy Overlord

Re: Trump First Term I: I for One Welcome Our New Trumpy Overlord

Argentinian news reporting that Trump's big concern when taking his congratulatory call from Argentina's president was to push him to approve some permits for Trump properties in Buenos Aires.

More from those irreverent jokers that are just like South Park. For really smart people, they don't seem to understand that "in the original German" is supposed to be used sardonically, not with pride. "One wonders if these people are people at all...". Tell me again why we need to have this debate and present both viewpoints as valid?

Yeah I'm not sure I like that strategy either. Having friends of different political backgrounds at least shows them that not everyone on the other side is a bad person who deserves scorn. Glad my dad isn't cutting me off from Thanksgiving for voting Hillary :o

I thought this was an interesting commentary piece in yesterday's Minneapolis paper. At first I assumed it had to be written tongue-in-cheek, but honestly after coming back and reading this thread and similar things online, I'm not sure.

Personally, I've adopted a strategy that if I'm in a room alone with a Trump supporter, I just grab them by the genitals. Nothing sexual. Just a little something to let them know I have zero value for them as a human being.

Yeah, hard to say. And to me that says that its close enough to be true. The right said nothing during the lead up to the election...and many are now pretty much unsufferable. The article highlights that and also highlights the left's response 'are you kidding? and that's enough, good bye'. If just on FB. Due to political rants, I probably cut 3 off FB for all my time on the site until the election but 7 since the election. I don't need to hear 'grieve baby grieve' again.

A few threads back, Scarlet mentioned Kris Kobach--guy who did this--would be on Trump's transition team and one of our resident Just Don't Cares brushed it off with a, "Yeah, well I'll wait to see who the actual policy guys are".

Well guess who is back with a terrifying threat to our civil rights!

My favorite part was "extreme vetting questions" about the equality of men and women. Rule number one of authoritarianism is "Do as I say, not as I do"

I like to think of this place as one big ol' locker room, so it's fine, though admittedly, our next Attorney General thinks it's a bit of a gray area. My opinion on the matter is just as valid as anyone else's though, so I say grab away.

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." -- Evelyn Beatrice Hall

There's a word for those that choose to stifle free, open, full discourse of ideas.

I say let them all say what they will.

Re: Trump First Term I: I for One Welcome Our New Trumpy Overlord

My best friend voted for Trump...he is still my best friend. How people vote is not a criteria for my friendship.

Re: Trump First Term I: I for One Welcome Our New Trumpy Overlord

Voltaire, maybe?

Common error.

In The Friends of Voltaire (p. 199), Hall wrote the phrase: "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it" which is often misattributed to Voltaire himself.

I love how he thinks he's smarter than everyone and yet believes every silly myth out there.

Flaggy deserves a little bit of a break though. I'm not sure how well any of us would fare if we had to contend with a tiny share of the boogeymen hiding in his closet.

Your little quote mentions nothing about providing them a platform, which is the real issue here.

It's the same as the West Virginia lady that called Michelle Obama an ape in heels and the Washington Post describing it as "controversial remarks" like there's a legitimate Pro argument to what she said. She can have that viewpoint; I haven't seen anyone seriously suggesting she should be jailed. But presenting it that way only elevates and normalizes it. Your little irreverent South Park clones shouldn't be jailed for their Seig Heils either, but they sure as hell should be nowhere near mainstream political opinion. These guys were on the fringes of society for a reason, and now they're not because people like you felt we kept "piling on" poor Donald Trump.

I haven't stopped talking to anyone yet, or unfriended any obnoxious relatives on Facebook. I have plenty of other reasons to avoid those parts of the family as much as possible, but that doesn't mean I can't keep up the pleasantries for a few hours as required.

Whoever wrote that article is a self-important tool.

I think a lot of this has to do technology. It is a lot easier to tell someone to F off over a text or email. With Facebook, Twitter, etc people have a lot better idea where others stand politically and I also think they read more to wind them up. It's certainly been a bizarre couple of weeks but imagine the reaction there would have been if the outcome was like what happened in 2000.

What a sad man. I couldn't help but feeling sorry for his family and (now former, I suppose) friends. Then I started feeling really sad for him. To wrap yourself up in the support of a political candidate so tightly that it would cause you to burn bridges within your own family must be an empty existence. Members of my family have been vocal about their support for both of the big party candidates during this past election, but that doesn't mean they would be discarded to my personal history.

To go after those who disagree with you politically in such a vile method shows a lack of consideration for both them and yourself. If you can't see that there's an opportunity for honest and civil dialog to perhaps persuade them in the future, then you've lost the faith in your own arguments as it stands already.

Exactly.

My aforementioned brother-in-law who was a strong Trump supporter because of gun right's position will be at my house for Thanksgiving. His sister (my wife) is mortified by the very existence of Trump, but never once did it cross our mind to "uninvite" him.

Think of Trump like a kidney stone for the country. Pretty good likelihood it's going to be painful and deeply unpleasant, with a minuscule possibility it could kill you, but with plenty of liquids will probably just be cause for relief once it's over.
