I loafe and invite my soul
That's cool. I have had cod in fish and chips (where it is delightful) and other preparations (where it is disgusting). IINM it's a pretty low rent fish and you don't want to inquire too closely into its provenance. But it has had places and times where it's been the entire caloric economy, so it must at least be efficient.Portuguese cod is caught next to Newfoundland and Greenland. So you are right. But it's SUPER popular in Spain and Portugal as well as in the Spanish colonies (like Puerto Rico). You will find it with the name of bacalao. Which is normally salted cod, but we saw a lot of fresh cod called the same in Portugal- bacahlau. Pretty crazy.
In the cod museum, there's a TON of info on this, including how the dictator Salazar had huge plans for Portugal and cod.
in some respects, I wish I liked fish. But I generally find bacalao pretty disgusting, and wont bother trying fresh cod.
Is cod one of the entrees in the inedible portions of a Smörgåsbord? <-- I've never in my life seen food so delicious cheek by jowl with food so revolting. Though soul food is in the running.
