Re: Toyota UConn Holiday Classic (UConn, RPI, UML, Army) 12/29-30
Jim, I was really excited about last weekend's result against Niagara. It was indeed a step forward. Now let's see if they can keep moving forward against a team of calibre equal to Niagara away on their ice. UConn has some nice size, they can really bang, their work rate is right up there, they have great goaltending, and they have some snipers. What else is required other than winning one shift at a time, every shift, and playing unselfishly like a real team? They can really make some big big noise in the AHA if they continue to do that. Now they just have to execute.
My opinion is that defensively, they still need a lot of work. Bartus just sees far too many shots; his saving grace, no pun intended, is that he turns a lot of likely goals into saves.
And although I've only seen four games in person (Yale, UML @ Frietas, game 2 v. Niagara, and game 2 v. RIT), I can't say I know for certain what's deficient, because for the most part they're doing the basics right. Shot blocking and puck clearing, probably, are the two biggest improvement needs.
What I think about it, in the long run, is that it means Bartus can't really afford to have a bad game, and especially not against any of the teams they are fighting for position with right now (Canisius, RMU, Holy Cross, Bentley). What's good, though, is that right now, there's a wide band of teams that could reach the top, and UConn is within two solid weekends of doing so.
