Toyota UConn Holiday Classic (UConn, RPI, UML, Army) 12/29-30

Re: Toyota UConn Holiday Classic (UConn, RPI, UML, Army) 12/29-30

Terrific weekend for the Huskies again! Came back after falling behind for the win. I have to say Cole Schnieder is a very good hockey player. Seems like the kid is always around the puck and he can shoot it. I noticed when I've seen him play that he just seems to know where it is going and gets there, and he knows where his teammates will be and gets them the puck. The last guy I remember who seemed to play like that was Tim Olsen. Just makes everyone on the ice better when he's there.

It should be noted that UConn is NOT tied for third in the AHA because it has played more games than the others. They are in SEVENTH place which means this weekend is even more critical than it would appear at first blush.

I see what your saying but that would actually put them in fifth, they still have more points than Bentley and Holy Cross. Those other teams have to win those games in hand too. Right now they are putting themselves in position to control their own fate. Hopefully they can just stay on a roll here and build some more confidence heading into the home stretch. I would imagine this can't be hurting the Hockey East talk either!!

Although that difference is, right now, one game on most of the league, and two on Bentley/Holy Cross (who have not played each other at all). With the top 9 in the league only separated by 8 points total, the result of one game has more impact on a team's overall placement, but there's still so many games left for everyone in league.

What is going to be very vital for us, though, is that the road to the end of the season is easier for us than most:
1) We have 7 of the remaining 11 league games at home.
2) We have 5 of the remaining 11 games against the bottom three in the standings (thanks to the rescheduling of the Halloween game vs. Army, who we should have finished the series with).
3) We have a game we can 'safely' dump vs. Princeton and nobody else in league has any non-conference games remaining. Obviously the team will fight hard to win it (because we cannot have the confidence sapper of a blowout), and will welcome the week break after it, but it's a low-pressure game; if the Huskies lose, there's virtually no bad consequences.

Yeah? Watch what happens if the Huskies come out of this next weekend with less than three points. I have seen this movie before having been a fan for 25 years. Good things will not happen unless they grab this opportunity by the throat and throttle it with no mercy.

I get what you're saying RST, but this team has a little different feel to it. Actually they started to show a bit of something last year when they put together a pretty decent run I think 6 out of 7 down the stretch for home ice. The difference is that this year they are winning sooner and against better teams. But you're right that it could all come tumbling down if they don't keep fighting. I agree that they need to come out of the weekendwith at least one win. In some respects I'm more worried about the Sacred Hearts and AICs of the world. You can split with the upper echelon, but you absolutley need to win games against Army, SHU, AIC. And we have already got a tie with AIC, so that was a wasted opportunity.

They are in seventh place. They need three points minimum.

Re: Toyota UConn Holiday Classic (UConn, RPI, UML, Army) 12/29-30

That certainly sucked. I left after about five minutes of the second period. UConn was playing like a seventh place team who thought they were in third. Disrespected RMU and gave up two two-on-one's. Puck in the back of the net both times. That is not how you get it done.

The opera on PBS when I got home was much better entertainment. Donizetti's Anna Bolena starring the fiery Russian soprano Anna Netrebko in the leading role. Fantastic performance.

Re: Toyota UConn Holiday Classic (UConn, RPI, UML, Army) 12/29-30

Can't spot a team 4 and think that when you finally show up in the third you can come back. Absolutley dominant third, play like that for 60 and its a W. Been the story of their season so far.

Re: Toyota UConn Holiday Classic (UConn, RPI, UML, Army) 12/29-30

They were certainly out of sync, mailing it in, and getting frustrated by not scoring when I was there. Geez, learn some patience. There is no team in the AHA that can't kill the Huskies if they start taking chances when they don't need to. And if they have patience the Huskies will score based on their talent level alone.

Woulda helped if there were more people there. Hottest team in the AHA and they draw 586??? They gotta get more ink in the Courant and JI. The student section was fairly full but nobody else was there other than parents. I walked right in and got a ticket in row J in section 16. What is the SID doing? I have never seen anything in the JI and only infrequently in the Courant.

Eighth place now. Weekend a huge disappointment. At home.

Re: Toyota UConn Holiday Classic (UConn, RPI, UML, Army) 12/29-30

Good win for the Huskies last night. Let's see if they can do it again tonight in the Hart Center where wins have been very tough to come by for UConn.

Interesting that Niagara went to Robert Morris and won last night after the Huskies went to Niagara and took two. I suspect that UConn would like a muligan on last weekend against Robert Morris. Those games were very winnable, which makes tonight against HC even more important.

Re: Toyota UConn Holiday Classic (UConn, RPI, UML, Army) 12/29-30

Wow. You never know which UConn team will show up on any given night. But kudos!!!!!!

Obviously the Huskies have all the pieces to be very good. Great goaltending, good size, good speed, good sniping, willingness to hit and grind, willingness to go to the net, yadda, yadda, yadda. Question is, can they keep putting it all together and win out in the RS? (Yes, including Princeton.) Because if they do, there is no reason at all that this team could not also win the AHA tournament. That now has to be the goal.

Last week was awful, this week good. But to me the fact that they bounced back after what could have been the start of a disaster is at least hopeful. This team has some real talent. I also like the soccer comparison, it is possible to have multiple successful programs on campus. And with almost 20,000 students, there are bound to be some hockey fans. the one difference, of course is that the soccer team was incredibly successful when football was struggling to win in 1AA.

Seems to me that Princeton is a beatable team, too coming up. It will be tough, especially on the road, but not impossible.

Final thought in my stream of consciosuness post, after Pricneton, they really need to bear down. They have Army, Sacred heart(2), AIC(2) and Bentley(2). Can't give away any points against the first 3 for sure.

Huskies shoulda beaten Princeton last night. They gotta find a way to win those games going forward. Of course, they already know that. Fans disappointed. Do better next time.
