Tournament Speculation Thread

Re: Tournament Speculation Thread

Here is my take now that all the games are in the books. I have a 7-4 split, just don't see how they can leave St. Thomas home. They should be ranked higher than they are out West

AQ's

ECAC East- Norwich
NESCAC- Amherst
SUNYAC- Plattsburgh
ECAC NE- Wentworth
MASCAC- Plymouth State
MIAC- Gustavus Adolphus
NCHA- St. Norbert
MCHA- MSOE

Pool C - Oswego
Pool C - Elmira
Pool C - St. Thomas

1E. Norwich
2E. Oswego
3E. Amherst
4E. Plattsburgh
5E. Elmira
6E. Wentworth
7E. Plymouth State

1W. SNC
2W. St. Thomas
3W. GAC
4W. MSOE

Play-In round:

MSOE @ St. Norbert
Gustavus @ St. Thomas
Plymouth @ Wentworth

This of course means only one Western team in Placid.

Quarterfinals:

Plymouth / Wentworth @ Norwich
Elmira @ Oswego
MSOE/GAC @ SNC/St. Thomas
Plattsburgh @ Amherst

Re: Tournament Speculation Thread

As I understand it now looks like
ECAC East- Norwich
NESCAC- Amherst
SUNYAC- Plattsburgh
ECAC NE- Wentworth
MASCAC- Plymouth State
MIAC- Gustavus Adolphus
NCHA- St. Norbert
MCHA- MSOE

Pool C - Oswego
Pool C - Elmira
Pool C – Hobart

1E. Norwich
2E. Oswego
3E. Amherst
4E. Plattsburgh
5E. Elmira
6E. Hobart
7E. Wentworth
8E. Plymouth State

1W. SNC
2W. GAC
3W. MSOE

BUT could the smoke filled room could give us a a fly in the soup by putting Adrian or St. Thomas in and bumping ether Elmira or Hobart?

Yeah, but they aren't....it would hard to justify jumping them as high as they would need to considering their only game this week is a loss....St. Thomas is done.

Re: Tournament Speculation Thread

Code:
I'll take a stab at a potential bracket based on what we seem to know so far...basically everyone seems to have the same teams.

MSOE
*Gustavus Adolphus
		     *St. Norbert

		     Plattsburgh
		     *Amherst

Plymouth State
*Elmira
		     *Oswego

Wentworth
*Hobart
		     *Norwich

No way Adrian gets in now. They don't have the numbers. IF a 4th from the West gets in, it would be St Thomas. That's a BIG if...

Re: Tournament Speculation Thread

Thats a big if, yet St. Thomas is a whole lot more deserving and has a lot better record than the fourth team from the West that snuck in last year. I think they make it.

Re: Tournament Speculation Thread

And I was all ready for the Wednesday play-in game. St. Thomas would seem to be a decent Pool C candidate but with their Regional ranking I'm not sure they'll be under consideration. From an SNC perspective a 4th Western team might be a bad thing because I think it creates 2 play-ins out there.

Re: Tournament Speculation Thread

I don't think we'll have 2 Wednesday games out west. At this point, here's my best guess:

Play-In:

MSOE @ GA
Plymouth @ Elmira
Wentworth @ Hobart

Quarterfinals:

Hobart/Wentworth @ Norwich
Elmira/Plymouth State @ Oswego
MSOE/GA @ SNC
Plattsburgh @ Amherst

This is my guess too, only that I'm tempted to think that the NCAA would just assume have Amherst @ Plattsburgh. Stafford's capacity and Plattsburgh's proximity to Placid may seem more appealing to the committee, and would make for an interesting "wrinkle" in the whole scheme of things.

A lot is riding on this destination choice, since both clubs are near perfect on home ice. The Lords and Cards are extremely close in stats, and I've got a feeling that Platty's going to get that #3, possibly if only because of the NCAA's chance for potentially making more dough.

Re: Tournament Speculation Thread

I think that's what the final (super-secret) NCAA rankings give us - St Thomas ranked higher in the West, and a 7-4 split.

Us westerners could hope for a 7/4 split with three Wednesday games out east and two western quarterfinals :)

Re: Tournament Speculation Thread

I'm guessing Elmira is safe - but gotta wonder...could St. Thomas bump Hobart?

In some ways the numbers make it seem like it could be close...but then again St. Thomas was ranked 5th in the West in the last NCAA ranking so would the committee be looking their way? Hobart crushed a very hot Neumann team that had just picked up two road wins against ranked teams - what did St. Thomas do this week to justify getting the nod?

Maybe...but if I did this correct, its close besides the record? Though Hobart has SOS...USCHO does not have the team comparison for these two teams so I just looked at it and put it together...

Code:
    St. Thomas vs Hobart
WIN 0.7917 1 0.6111 0
SOS 0.5004 0 0.5509 1
H2H 0- 0- 0 0 0- 0- 0 0
COP 0- 1- 0 0 1- 1- 0 1
RNK 4- 2- 1 1 9- 8- 1 0

PTS 2 2

Apologies if I calculated it wrong...

Re: Tournament Speculation Thread

I'm with you - the numbers look close. My question is, given that St. Thomas lost this week to a team ranked below them (St. Olaf)...would they they still keep their #5 ranking to stay in consideration? None of us get to see the "final" ranking that leads to the tourney selection....so I have to wonder if they'd still be in the hunt?
