Top Incoming Players, Freshman players to watch

Re: Top Incoming Players, Freshman players to watch

Trent Ruffalo at Yale, Nice group of 9 frosh coming in. Hopefully we sneak up on a few teams ;)

Re: Top Incoming Players, Freshman players to watch

DJ Vandercook a Northern Michigan Is A Goal Scorer to keep an eye on.

Great addition to the CCHA..

Re: Top Incoming Players, Freshman players to watch

Jordan Ruby looks like he's set to continue a long tradition of outstanding goalies at RIT. Keep an eye on him for sure. Many people were impressed with Madolora's stats from last year... but Ruby could challenge for the starting job.

Powers &8^]

He didn't even win his league MVP....he lost to a lowly Division III goalie recruit who is going to....

you guessed it.

Elmira College :)

DU's 2011 Recruiting Class
D Scott Mayfield (Youngstown, USHL) - NHL 1st or 2nd round pick
F Zac Larraza (U.S. Under-18) - Possible NHL 3rd round pick
D Joey LaLeggia (Penticton Vees, BCHL)- BCHL Defensive player of the year. Will probably be a 5G, 20A guy. Possible WCHA Freshman of the year if Rocco Grimaldi falters.
D Josiah Didier (Cedar Rapids, USHL) - Likely to be NHL Draft pick. Will be solid from get go.
F Daniel Doremus (Sioux Falls, USHL) - Will be solid from the get go
F Larkin Jacobson (Janesville Jets, NAHL)
D-F Wade Bennett (Wichita Falls, NAHL)
F Matt Tabrum (Omaha, USHL)
\
Add:
G Juho Olkinuora (Sioux Falls, USHL)
F Ty Loney (Youngstown, USHL) Teammate of Scott Mayfield

hobart higgins would tell you Michigan has the best recruiting class. CHRIS! would tell you Boston College has the best frosh class EVAH!

here's my take.

Grimaldi @ UND is the one to keep an eye on as far as national frosh of the year type deal

Rumpel @ Wisconsin in goal

Rau @ the rats may put up 25+ points as a frosh

not sure about the rest of the WCHA

Those are the three I'm most anxious to see play as well.

Re: Top Incoming Players, Freshman players to watch

Michigan is loaded with:
1) John Gibson- rated as top goalie in upcoming NHL Draft
2) Zach Hyman- Canadian Junior A player of the Year, Florida Panther Draft Pick, Stud F
3) Alex Guptill- 3rd rounder Dallas 2010 draft
4) Brennan Serville- NHL ranked for upcoming draft, nice size Dman
and more....

Great class.

OK we lost John Gibson but still think Michigan all the way.

yes. and I may actually be underrating Rau w/25 possible pts. I wouldn't be surprised if the kid put up 30-35pts or more. Minnesota has underperformed recently but they've GOT the talent. if they play together look out. but...as a UW fan I'm hoping they play like there's 5 pucks out there this year;)

Re: Top Incoming Players, Freshman players to watch

Your slurping woke me up, RR.

always a GREAT GAME when the Wolverines face the Spartans.
We lost a lot of firepower up front but you guys lost some key players too.
Wont be long until the Titans of hockey clash!
Go Blue!

Yeah it's tough to predict how some of the new freshmen will do but Rau could be fun to watch, if you're a Minnesota fan at least. :)

And I think you guys got one he'll of a goaltender in Rumpel. I think that kid is gonna be something special. Both the Gophs and Badgers are gonna be young, but talented. Should be fun to watch :)

I streamed the HS finals last year and that kid was outstanding. Obviously the hustle on that game-winning goal was exactly what you want your star players to exhibit.

Also 2 kids on Duluth East who were juniors but I forget their names now.

I know WCHA is not a frosh league but I have to believe that w/Hill out (and that seems to have rejuvenated the fan base if not the kids on the team) and Guentzel in, and a talented frosh class surrounding him, Rau could stand out very quickly and collect a lot of points

we're cautiously optimistic on Rumpel. Some people are saying he could be another CUJO (those are big skates to fill). I haven't seen him play but I'm hoping he can be 1/2 as good as the hype and I'd take that for sure.

EDIT - yeah, both teams are going to be fun to watch for sure. I can't wait for the games vs. MN, Nodak and DU. I also love watching the MN vs. Nodak games if/when I can get them on the pc

Re: Top Incoming Players, Freshman players to watch

How many and which "top incoming players and freshmen to watch" will be top players we watch leaving college hockey at the end of next season?

To the NHL? I don't see many that stick out. Saponari but does he really count? I don't think Grimaldi has the size package to be a 1 and done even if he's the most talented freshman. Doubt Mayfield since it usually takes defensemen longer.

Short answer, none stick out to me as one and dones. If anything I could see someone signing and going CHL but no Kessel's or Erik Johnson's.

Add Hyman to that list he is quoted as wanting a degree from Michigan. You can add Grimaldi too. Both are Panther draft picks and the Panthers have loaded up with vets saying they will be leaving kids in school to develop.

I learned today that all the good players are in the CHL.

You thought a 5th round draft pick might be a one and done?

Chuck, he's no ordinary 5th round pick.. just look at what he has done since the draft- Canadian Junior A Player of the year, Ontario Hockey Associations BJ Monro award for top Pro prospect, lead all of Canada in points per game last season at 2.40 ppg, jersey in Hockey Hall of Fame... we can go on... there's lots of press on this kid... Panthers even project him as a top 6 forward in the NHL.... I'm just glad he's a Wolverine! At least we get to watch him develop and sure hope he stays all 4 years. Imagine how good he will become learning from and playing for Red Berenson.
